Welcome to We are excited to celebrate our 18th year of CharlottesvilleFamily, an adventure that started when Robin, a soon-to-be first-time mom in 1998, imagined a way to collect and share the many wonderful resources and experiences she was finding in the Charlottesville community. She envisioned a hub to connect us all. With that vision, she created the AlbemarleKids.com website and within a year was joined by Jen as co-publisher and the rest, as they say, is history. We changed our name to AlbemarleFamily in 2004, introduced our lovable bee mascot, Bumble, and expanded the magazine from quarterly to ten times per year, and soon after we advanced to a monthly publication. In 2012, we embraced the name of CharlottesvilleFamily to keep up with our community’s expanding views (and make life a little simpler for our out-oftown clients). In 2016, we added Bloom to our publication’s name, making it CharlottesvilleFamily’s Bloom magazine. We’ve continued to add to our line of publications CharlottesvilleFamily’s Ultimate Go-To Guide (in your hands), Charlottesville Welcome Book, Charlottesville Wine & Country Weddings and Charlottesville Wine & Country Living. The Skinny on Schools Charlottesville and Albemarle County schools continue to earn praise for innovative teaching as well as high levels of achievement on Virginia’s Standards of Learning tests. There is a huge variety of preschools, from creative co-ops to international immersion programs; and for schoolage children, our public school systems are exceptional and our many outstanding local private schools provide a variety of additional options, from boarding schools to single-gender programs to faith-based education. the biggest employer in our area. It’s also a great draw for sports fans, who turn out in droves to cheer on the UVA Cavaliers. The big domed building, newly renovated, is the Rotunda that was designed by Jefferson based on the Pantheon in Rome. A Road Oft Taken You should know that “Rio Road” is not pronounced “Ree-o,” but rather “Rye-o.” The explanation we have heard is that it used to be Route 10. Others claim it sprang from the nearby Rivanna River (locals pronounce it “RYvanna”). Local Eats We have several farmers markets, a booming winery and brewery industry, and many Charlottesville restaurants use locally sourced ingredients— including products from Polyface Farm, made famous by Michael Pollan’s bestselling The Omnivore’s Dilemma—and that makes all the difference when it comes to good eating. Celebrity Spotting While you’re out and about, you may get a glimpse of local celebrities like Dave Matthews, Howie Long, Sissy Spacek, John Grisham, Boyd Tinsley, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Mary Chapin Carpenter or Jan Karon. Follow the example set by other locals and refrain from staring or asking for autographs. The Dave Matthews Band (aka DMB) are hometown boys who made the big time. On your next outing to the Downtown Mall, stop in at Miller’s to see where it all started. What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “Wahoos” during the rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use around Grounds (campus) to denote University students. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later and has gained growing popularity in recent years. (Interestingly, “Wahoo” is also a predatory fish that can drink twice its weight in liquid!)

Plan, Plan and Plan Some More! Consider your choices. Not every daytrip is the right outing for you. Some sites are easier to access than others. A few are rambunctious hands-on learning kinds of places that some kids might find overwhelming. Some are places where you look but don’t touch. Others may be wide-open spaces, and if your tot is in that crazy stage where keeping hold of them should earn you an Olympic medal, you probably want some walls to help manage your adventurer. Other destinations may have upsetting topics. For example, the Civil War is tough to explain to a preschooler, so use your judgment to choose the best outing for you.

Call ahead. Our daytrips guide is well researched but, as we all know, the only thing certain in life is change. Hours, admission price, activities and events can and do change, and websites are not always up-to-date. We once drove two hours with three small children to tour a site only to find that it was closed that Saturday for a wedding. Had we called, we could have saved ourselves a lot of tears and the day of driving! As a result, we’ve intentionally left out directions and hours, hoping that will force you to call! Sorry, it’s for your own good.

Get directions. Use an Internet mapping site to get oriented and print out directions, but then call to confirm them. (Google isn’t always right!) While you’ve got someone on the phone, confirm hours, admission prices and any special something you might have your heart set on seeing— like that rare painting that might be on loan to some other museum!

How Do You Spark Your Child’s Love of Learning? The Standards of Learning—just say those words and you will see your kids wince. Say the words again, this time in a room full of parents, and you’re likely to get the same anxious reactions. But it doesn’t have to be all hard work. One of the best ways to help your kids do well in school and on their SOLs is to relax about the tests and think about what is really important: sparking your child’s enthusiasm for learning. The rest will fall into place. A lifelong love for learning and a curious mind are two of the greatest gifts any of us can hope to pass on to our children. So, how exactly do you spark your child’s love for learning? Check out a few ideas that will enrich your daytrip adventures on the next page.

Pack wisely and prepare for the unexpected. As mothers, we always start with a cooler of water bottles and fruit for snacking, and in writing this guide we fine-tuned the contents of “Mama’s Magic Bag” (the old backpack filled with comfort that is never allowed to leave our minivan). Granola bars, water, diapers, wipes, sunscreen, bug spray, a first aid kit, crayons and a notebook rescued many a strained moments with tired cranky travelers. (Not all of the cranky ones were the kids either!) You have an advantage, too—we’ve written this guide and now you’ll benefit from our packing tips and have the phone numbers of all the attractions in one handy volume. Don’t forget to have your cell phone charged!

Become a Lifetime Learner! hen it comes to outings, whether it be a weekend daytrip or a quick W midweek experience of the arts, we’re firm believers in making the most of an opportunity to learn something new. No matter what the age of your party, whether it’s just you and a friend or you and your kids, we can all become lifetime learners when we get up and go to explore and learn more about our world, its past or just what makes a water slide so much fun!

Read, read, read. And we’ll say it again—read! And that goes for your kids, too. The more your kids see you reading, the more they’ll read, because it will be a part of everyday life. Use little moments to practice reading. Read street signs, maps, tourist brochures and restaurant menus together.

Play the old-fashioned way.

Dress up for your outing. Little train conductors could wear their engineer overalls to ride the James River Rambler, and don’t leave behind your tri-corner hat or bonnet when you visit Colonial Williamsburg. Creative and dramatic play expand the imagination, hone problem-solving skills, let kids enjoy just being kids and make for great photos!

Keep your eyes open. On your nature outings bring along binoculars and a magnifying glass. Observe insects and small animals in their habitats. How many legs do they have? Where do they live? What senses are they using? Looking at flowers, ask, how are the leaves ordered? Can you hear different bird calls? Are you able to see different bark on trees? Are there patterns?

Travel by the numbers.

Reading maps with your kids and planning the outing together is a great way to do math without being academic. How many miles is it from Charlottesville to Luray? If we set out at 9:30am and the drive is 42 minutes, what time will we arrive? If admission is $3 per person and we have 4 people in our family, how much will it cost? These sorts of puzzles give real life meaning to all of those workbook pages full of sums and dividends.

Encourage your child’s talents and passions. Let them choose a destination. With dozens of choices on the following pages, you’re certain to find something to match their interests. It is amazing how much information can be absorbed when interest is sparked.

Let your kids be “know-it-alls.”

Children are like walking almanacs, live records of every fact that has ever intrigued them. Make up family quiz games, or design your own version of Trivial Pursuit. Play “20 Questions” when you ride in the car. Try a contest to see who can learn the craziest fact or the longest word while on your outing.

Enlist a co-pilot.

First-hand experiences of our country’s landmarks can spark a lifelong love of history, and planning them can be part of your child’s education. As a local teacher said, “Reading maps, planning a route, using directions like north and south instead of left and right—that doesn’t come naturally. It really needs to be reinforced by parents.”

Find new spots.

In Central Virginia, there’s no excuse for not taking advantage of all of the nearby attractions with presidential birthplaces at our backdoor and geological formations like the Shenandoah Caverns and the Natural Bridge an easy hour or two away. If you think you’ve exhausted the local repertoire, try a new approach. Most families have been to Monticello, but certainly not everyone can say they’ve been a part of one of Monticello’s unique hands-on craft or history workshops. And if history is your family’s favorite, try Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier in Petersburg—an amazing interactive experience of the Civil War where, using headsets, you follow the life of a soldier as he tells his story in his own words, which were taken from journals and letters.

A Collection of Memories Here’s a word from the wise about collecting souvenirs too! We all retain what we’ve learned when we revisit a subject again and again. Building a collection of something you can pick up at just about any gift shop will put you and the family on the path to revisiting and remembering all those wonderful places you’ll be exploring—while at the same time preventing those pleas for that expensive stuffed animal you know will end up in next year’s donation box. For instance, create a collection of souvenir pins and display them all on a banner in your family room, or make a special box to house a collection of souvenir key chains or rolled and embossed pennies, or make a book for postcards or brochures. These collections will be easier on your budget and lead to countless remembrances of all those special places you visit as your collector (big or little) pours over them again and again with friends and family. Let’s face it, who doesn’t want something from the gift shop to remember all those great times, right?

C&O Railway Heritage Center (Clifton Forge) 1–2 hour drive Discover the great American story of how the railroads came to be. The Heritage Center’s grounds are arranged as a walk through to show the story of railroading, from its earliest days to the 21st century. Browse the indoor and outdoor displays, take a ride on a real handcar called the Little C&O, and enjoy a tour of restored railroad equipment in Smith’s Creek Yard. The site serves to honor those who contributed to building the railroads as well as those still contributing today. Located in Clifton Forge, where railway locomotives used to be serviced for their trips, the story of the area is also told. Try on eagle’s wings, wiggle through a digestive tract, dig for dinosaur fossils or create your own art. Complete with a Virginia limestone cave, a kid-sized grocery store and a toddler-sized museum within the museum, it’s no surprise that CMoR is one of the top-ranked children’s museums nationally. With 42,000 square feet, it offers several interactive exhibit areas, a museum shop and more to keep the whole family entertained for hours. Next door, the Science Museum’s multi-ton granite kugel sculptures of the Earth and the moon draw kids who are amazed at their ability to move these hefty spheres with a slight touch. Chiles Peach Orchard (Crozet) 0–1 hour drive Pick your own fun in Crozet. Chiles Peach Orchard has much more than just peaches and will keep you and the kids entertained (and full!) all day. Open from May until Thanksgiving, check out the Fruit Availability Chart on their website to explore when strawberries, apples, nectarines, sweet cherries and peaches will be available throughout the season. Head out to Chiles before Halloween, and you’ll be able to pick the perfect pumpkin to carve. The farm market has everything you could want from jams and jellies to cider slushies and more. In early August, they host Homemade Peach Ice Cream Days with homemade ice cream from their famous peaches and will have you and your kids licking your lips for more. Crabtree Falls (Montebello) 1–2 hour drive

Depending on whom you believe, Crabtree Falls is either the tallest waterfall along the Virginia portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the tallest waterfall in the Southeast or the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi. At any rate, it is an impressive site, featuring a total vertical drop of 1,200 feet in a series of cascades. The Forest Service has significantly improved the infrastructure in recent years. Gravel paths, wooden stairs, a beautiful 110-foot laminated bridge over the Tye River, observation decks and safety railings have been added to increase accessibility, enjoyment and safety, particularly important as the algae-covered rocks on the fall are notoriously dangerous. Dinosaur Land If you were glued to the screen watching Jurassic Park, you can take that prehistoric experience one step further by packing up the car and heading over to Dinosaur Land—the only one of its kind in the east—for an old-time, classic roadside adventure. Here in White Post in the Shenandoah Valley, the Mesozoic era comes alive as you cautiously step into the prehistoric past and experience a time when dinosaurs were the only creatures that roamed the Earth. Dixie Caverns and Pottery Shop (Salem) 2–3 hour drive Descend deep into the enthralling passageways of caverns thousands of years old or stay above ground and explore the pottery shop and antique mall with over 40 dealers selling collectibles, jewelry and crafts. Dixie Caverns is open 363 days a year, with guided cavern tours from 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. You will find one-of-a-kind knick-knacks and antiques, and if you’re traveling light, the personable staff can ship your treasures home. The Rock and Mineral Shop boasts unique stones ranging from a few cents to thousands of dollars. Campers are welcome at the Dixie Caverns Campground, which offers electricity, water, cable TV, space for tents and a bathhouse. Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad (Elkins and Durbin, West Virginia) 3–4 hour drive Explore wild, wonderful West Virginia from an entirely new perspective—aboard a train! From April to December, take a ride on one of four refurbished and historic locomotives that depart from either Elkins or Durbin depots. Choose to chug alongside a clean, mountain river, and take in the sights of rolling meadows of wildflowers, or climb to over 4,000 feet in elevation and burrow under the mighty Cheat Mountain (via an 1,800-foot tunnel featuring an “S” curve of the track inside). Check the calendar for Wild West adventures and a holiday Polar Express train that visits Santa at the North Pole. Fan Mountain Observatory (Charlottesville) 0–1 hour drive While only offered twice a year in April and October, the public nights at Fan Mountain are not to be missed. Stargazers will love observing the incredible views of the stars and planets through state-of-the-art telescopes. Fan Mountain also offers slideshows and other visual presentations, as well as tours of the Observatory, which is owned and operated by the Astronomy Department at the University of Virginia. While tickets are free, many people jump to take advantage of this infrequent and extraordinary opportunity, so reservations are required. (Staunton) 0–1 hour drive Visiting the Frontier Culture Museum is a bit like a whirlwind tour of Old Europe in the 1600s and 1700s. This popular living history museum hosts 11 outdoor exhibits made up of original buildings from Early America, England, Ireland, West Africa, Germany and Virginia, which have been carefully documented, dismantled, transported to the Staunton site and restored. An American Indian hamlet opened recently. Visitors to the museum will learn about the Old World origins of this country’s first immigrants, including how they lived in their homeland and how their diverse culture molded our country. There’s a lot to see, so be sure to set aside a whole afternoon for your visit. Hands-on exhibits and experiences, costumed interpreters and real working farms make this a great time for the whole family. Special events throughout the year make it worth planning seasonal visits. Highlands Golf Park (Ruckersville) 0–1 hour drive Whether you’re experienced or just beginning, this golf park has a wide range of opportunities to improve your skills or just have fun. The park offers a fully lighted golf range, 44 grass and mat tee stations, a practice putting green, pitching and chipping areas, bunkers and uneven lie mounds for specialty shots, a pro shop and even a fun mini-golf course by the name of Pirate Pete’s. This versatile golf practice and learning facility allows people to practice any shot, under any condition, at virtually any time. Humpback Rocks & Mountain Farm Trail (Afton) 0–1 hour drive This short, easy trail winds through an 1890s farm, complete with log cabin, chicken coop, honey tree, springhouse, garden and more. The best chance to catch the living history demonstrations and live bluegrass concerts is to visit weekends during warm weather (during winter, most facilities are closed, although the trail remains open). For those who are daring and limber, just across the road at milepost 6.0 is the trail up to Humpback Rocks, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of both the Shenandoah and Rockfish valleys. If you have older kids in tow, head to the International Spy Museum, where they can take on new secret identities from the ever-mysterious world of international espionage. Since opening in 2002, this fun, interactive museum has been the only museum in the United States dedicated entirely to espionage, while possessing the largest collection of international espionage artifacts on public display. For a well-rounded option that will enrich and educate the entire family, make a day out of exploring the

Smithsonian Institution—an extensive series of museums, galleries and collections that comprise “the nation’s attic,” conveniently located en route with many of the must-see monuments of the United States. If you haven’t been to the (free!) Smithsonian’s National Zoo in the last few years, consider revisiting it with your kiddies, as it is an essential part of every child’s Smithsonian experience. The grounds, which are hilly, and the weather are the two most important factors to take into account when planning your trip. When the weather is milder, the animals are out where they can be spotted and photographed for adorable keepsakes your little ones will love.

When you’re ready to cool off (or warm up depending on what time of the year you’re visiting), venture into the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum & the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center to tour and let your little ones explore the world of aviation and outer space. Countless artifacts, exhibits and even interactive learning sessions and lectures are offered at the museum and center. Or, if your gang is more interested in learning about

a broader range of topics, check out the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. There, you will find exciting displays like a live coral reef, Neanderthal reconstructions and large mammal and butterfly exhibits. Dinosaurs are currently on view in the new exhibit “The Last American Dinosaurs” on the second floor of the museum. The whole gang will be on board with this excursion. For something seasonal, consider making a special trek to Washington, D.C., for one of its many festivals, holiday displays or annual events, where the family can also ice skate, sample seasonal treats and more. Two popular, family-friendly favorites include the National Cherry Blossom Festival each spring, which celebrates the United States’ relationship with Japan, and the National Christmas Tree Lighting, where the President kicks off the holiday season via a timeless tradition.

The one-hour mission allows visitors to complete their own operation in the fictional country of Khandar, complete with secret audio conversations, an escape from a high-security compound and more. James Madison Museum (Orange) 0–1 hour Know how Orange received its name? You’ll learn this and much more at the James Madison Museum. The museum is home to the Virginia Convention document ratifying the Constitution along with the 20 proposed amendments attached to it. The document, originally written by Madison, was later reworked into what is now the Bill of Rights. While immersed in history, be sure to see the Presidents’ Room, which features personal belongings of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and Z. Taylor, the Virginia Ratification document of 1788 and the letter from George Washington about the celebrations of the ratification observed in Alexandria, Virginia. Wells Planetarium boasts a digital projection system and a star projector that create a realistic (but indoor) night sky and full-dome movies, too. The free Saturday afternoon public shows (at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.) are great for young astronomers who usually have early bedtimes or who may not yet have the patience for one of the Charlottesville options. You’ll get a chance to see a map of the night sky—stars, planets and constellations—that will be visible from your yard later that night. The center is home to artists’ studios and three galleries, making it the largest art display center in Charlottesville. The building was built as a high school in 1916; but after renovations, the light and spacious classrooms were transformed into studios rented out by over 40 local artists. The center also offers a wide range of art classes for adults and teens (including watercolor, modeling clay and wax, sculpture and figure drawing) taught by members of the McGuffey Art Association. Writing about his beloved home, Thomas Jefferson said, “I am as happy no where else and in no other society, and all my wishes end, where I hope my days will end, at Monticello.” His clever inventions abound, from the Great Clock in the hallway that ingeniously marks the days of the week as well as hours with a system of pulleys, to the polygraph copying machine used for his many famous letters and the dumbwaiter that brought food quickly up to the dining room from the basement kitchen. The house tour takes you through the first-floor rooms where you can peek at Jefferson’s book collection, learn about his government work and see the original home furnishings. At this designated World Heritage site, the guides pride themselves in being fresh with each tour, so you can learn something new with each visit. Parents with young children will want to be sure to take one of the family tours for the hands-on “extras” that make the experience special for kids. Also, be sure to set aside time to stroll the grounds, especially Mulberry Row which was the center of plantation activity, and peek in the smoke house, kitchen and stables located beneath the main house. Shenandoah National Park 0–1 hour drive When it’s time to get away from it all, the Shenandoah National Park provides a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the urban world. Built by Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, this park has it all—breathtaking mountain vistas, serene woodland trails and an abundance of wildlife including deer, black bear, birds, wild turkey and other woodland animals. Most people experience the park via Skyline Drive, which meanders along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where there are 75 overlooks for you to stop and stretch your legs. If you want to stay awhile, campgrounds and back-country areas (request a pass) are sprinkled across the park, or you could take it nice and easy at Big Meadows Lodge or Skyland Lodge. Sherando Lake

(Stuarts Draft) 0–1 hour drive Known as the jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Sherando Lake is tucked away within the George Washington National Forest. The area has two lakes, with a recreation area between them. The lower 25-acre spring-fed lake has a 200-yard sandy beach, shaded play area, bathhouses with warm showers and a wading area for children. Boating is allowed, and the lake is stocked with trout, bass and catfish for fishing. The area is perfect for a picnic, with its 70 picnic tables, grills and covered shelter. Hiking trails wind their way around the lake, giving visitors a panoramic view. For a greater challenge, take Cliff Trail, which travels above the lake. Smithsonian National Zoo (Washington D.C.) 2–3 hour drive If you haven’t been to the (free) Smithsonian’s National Zoo in the last few years, consider adding it to your itinerary. Two factors are very important for a fun day at the national zoo: age and weather. First, the kids need to be old enough to enjoy the grounds, which are hilly, or young enough to be pushed in the stroller. Second, the weather needs to be mild enough that the animals are out where they can be seen and that your family isn’t disappointed. Here are a few other important tips: take the Metro, if you can, to avoid traffic and parking fees. When you arrive, get off at the Cleveland Park station so your 10-minute walk to the zoo is downhill; when you leave, walk downhill (again) for about 10 minutes to the Woodley Park–Zoo station. Virginia Safari Park (Natural Bridge) 1–2 hour drive Get ready to roll down the windows and take a wild ride of discovery through 180 amazing acres of critters. Remember the in-park speed limit is 5 miles per hour, but the main traffic jams are four-legged, not four-wheeled. You can go for an autumn or spring hike and also cool off in the summer all at the same parks. Try Chris Greene Lake, near the airport, for swimming or fishing. The Ivy Creek Natural Area, an official site on the Virginia African American Heritage Trail, is a great place to go for an afternoon jaunt. To temporarily escape from civilization, hike a section of the Rivanna Trail and fish, kayak or let your dog swim on the Rivanna River. For a gorgeous walk, take the SaundersMonticello Trail. Hikers enjoy lovely views as this wide trail winds its way along Carter Mountain toward Monticello. When it comes to watery, warm-weather fun, check out the Onesty Aquatic Center on Meade Avenue or the larger sprayground at Forest Hills Park.
