Summer 2014
Welcome! Year-round natural beauty, hallowed halls of history, spectacular arts and music and small-city sophistication — Charlottesville has it all! It is easy to see why Sperling’s Best Places recently named Charlottesville as the #1 Best Place to Live. Here you can walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello home and at his beloved University of Virginia — both are World Heritage Sites full of fascinating history and interesting architecture — and you can relax in the scenic countryside he so admired dotted with stunning vineyards, horse farms and Blue Ridge Mountain views. With so many wonderful places to enjoy here in Charlottesville, it can be tough to choose. So we went to the experts to find out what they think is the best of the best. We polled our Charlottesville Welcome Book readers, locals and tourists, about their favorite local businesses that exemplify wonderful customer service, from delicious restaurants, amazing boutiques, hot spots and cool clubs to wonderful resorts and awe-inspiring historical landmarks — and everything in between! Watch for the Welcome Book Winner logo on ads throughout this issue and in shop windows, and go to CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com to get the insider’s scoop on the best of everything our town has to offer. All of the award winners are highlighted in a special digital edition online, along with plenty of reader’s tips that will put you “in the know.” Throughout the summer, we’ll give away tickets to Charlottesville concerts, festivals and other events on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook, so be sure to like us for a chance to win!

Attractions & Museums Summering at Monticello Monticello: Jennifer Jones
From the moment you glimpse the iconic pillars of Monticello’s West Portico and the breathtaking displays of summer daylilies, you know you are in the presence of a visionary mind. The author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson dedicated his life to serving our country at its founding as the third United States president, Governor of Virginia and Secretary of State, among other roles. Jefferson was also an architect, scholar, musician, inventor and agriculturalist. Like the Taj Mahal and Tower of London, Monticello is on the list of World Heritage Sites known the world over as cherished pieces of human history and of great universal value. When you tour the home, his clever inventions abound, from the Great Clock in the hallway that ingeniously marks the days and hours with a pulley system to the polygraph copying machine he designed for his famous letters. This summer, visitors can enjoy seasonal outdoor tours featuring the property’s archaeological discoveries and a look at the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored on the Monticello plantation. Those interested in the history of gardening can join the two-hour Revolutionary Garden tour on Wednesdays and Saturdays through October. Families will enjoy special house tours all summer on the hour just for children plus the Mountaintop Activity Center with lots of hands-on fun. Don’t forget your fishing poles for Kids Go Fish Weekend, June 13-15, when kids fish for free in the Kemper Park Pond.
Plan your visit for July 4 and you’ll witness the induction of new American citizens at the annual Monticello Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony.
Gardens at Monticello, Hall: Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello, photograph by Robert Llewellyn
For a more in-depth look at the history of the estate, don’t miss Monticello’s TOM Talks — a new series of talks featuring distinguished speakers on topics related to all facets of Monticello and Jefferson. The next TOM Talks are set for June 10 and 12, 6-7:30pm, featuring Diane Ehrenpreis and an exclusive tour of the South Pavilion, Thomas and Martha Jefferson’s first home as a married couple. Tickets for the talks are sold separately from the house tours. See monticello.org for details.

Ash Lawn-Highland: Jennifer Jones
Attractions & Museums More Colonial Riches
When visiting Monticello, make sure you save time for Ash Lawn-Highland, the elegant plantation home of President James Monroe, our fifth president and Jefferson’s good friend. Just 2.5 miles down the road from Thomas Jefferson’s “Little Mountain,” Ash Lawn is a working farm with more than 500 acres of land and a home for the performing arts. Visitors are invited to tour the historic presidential residence, explore the amazing boxwoods and learn more about President Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth.
For those seeing both Ash Lawn-Highland and Monticello on the same day, the perfect lunch break can be found at the 18th-century Michie Tavern, just down the road from Monticello, where you’ll feel like you’ve been swept back in time. The rustic restaurant features hearty Southern fare and servers in period attire. You might be invited to join in a Virginia Reel or maybe even glimpse one of the rumored ghosts!
Curator at Michie Tavern: Michie Tavern
With lovely examples of early-American and Victorian decorative arts for visitors to admire, Ash Lawn-Highland provides another authentic view of 19th-century life. The plantation home looks much as it did when the Monroe family of five lived there, with classic French decorative touches, a display of White House china and a tiny, child’s tea set in the nursery. Costumed interpreters demonstrate various colonial activities such as open-hearth cooking and candle making, giving guests an authentic feel for the era. Investigate the gardens, enjoy the peacocks, sheep and other livestock and peer into outbuildings to get a historic view of colonial craftsmanship. This summer, Ash Lawn-Highland will host the Albemarle County Fair July 31-August 2. The fair is a three-day agricultural celebration, complete with farm animals, exhibits, baked goods, crafts and more! On August 24, commemorate the Battle of Bladensburg and the burning of Washington by the British with lectures by Rick Britton, children’s activities and period music. For information on both events, visit ashlawnhighland.org and albemarlecountyfair.com.
Another presidential property in the area to explore is Montpelier, the home of James and Dolly Madison. While visiting the 2,650-acre estate and mansion, you’ll discover historic buildings and engaging exhibits, active archaeological dig sites, breathtaking gardens, cooking demonstrations and fun hands-on activities for the kids. Bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful surroundings while learning about the man who was called the “Father of the Constitution” and the woman who inspired the title “First Lady.” Special events include the Big Woods walks, metal-detector expeditions and horse-drawn wagon rides. See montpelier.org for more summertime events.

Fun Especially for Families Summer Family Fun
A fun way for families to see Charlottesville is to hop aboard the charming Downtown trolley and enjoy the ride. The free trolley stops at specially marked bus stops every 15 minutes, so getting on and off for adventures and exploration is easy. Families of young children won’t want to miss the Virginia Discovery Museum on the Historic Downtown Mall. Little ones will enjoy a spin on the charming antique carousel out front and, of course, everyone will enjoy an ice cream from one of the many delicious dessert shops on the mall! If you’re looking for outdoor play, McGuffey Park near the McGuffey Art Center is an easy walk from the Downtown Mall. There are also three swimming lakes in Albemarle County with sandy beaches, and some offer extensive hiking trails as well. While in the county, be sure to visit one of our many pick-yourown orchards and farms for delicious berries, summer fruits and even homemade ice creams. If you’re in town, check out Washington Park Pool or Meade Park’s Onesty Family Aquatic Center, with kid-friendly water features like the teacup, boat and slide. The Arts & Music Scene Art & Theatre When you visit Charlottesville, you’ll quickly see how our vibrant arts scene has something for everyone! Experience engaging local performances and touring troupes this summer at venues large and small. From national acts at The Paramount Theater to lively performances from our smaller local theater companies such as Live Arts, Play On!, the Four County Players and the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton — there is always a show going on. This summer, Four County Players presents “Shrek the Musical” beginning July 18. Check fourcp.org for performance times. Beginning June 12, Play On! unveils “The Diaries of Adam and Eve,” a comedy based on the short story of the same name by Mark Twain. July’s production will be the musical revue, “Now That’s What I Call Evil,” a light-hearted collection of songs by Broadway villains, including villains from Disney favorites. Visit playontheatre.org for details. For a truly unique experience, check out the Missoula Children’s Theatre, which will arrive in town this summer to set up and to cast local youth in productions of “The Secret Garden” and “Treasure Island” at The Paramount Theater. Make musical memories with the Ash Lawn Opera, a favorite of locals and visitors alike also performing at the Paramount. This summer’s selections include “Susannah” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” Staunton’s American Shakespeare Center presents the works of Shakespeare under the original staging conditions at the Blackfriars Playhouse. This summer’s season includes “Macbeth” and “Cyrano de Bergerac.” And for something completely different, check Big Blue Door’s schedule at bigbluedoor.org for their improv and Telling True Stories shows. Performances abound in Charlottesville! Check out the full schedule at CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com.

The Arts & Music Scene Art That Moves You Exuberant painter Jackson Pollock said that art is “all a big game of construction, some with a brush, some with a shovel, some choose a pen.” Whatever your favorite medium, galleries and artwork abound here. Each first Friday of the month, from 6-8pm, local galleries and other venues displaying works of art open their doors for the popular First Friday Artwalk. A perfect place to start your walk is the McGuffey Art Center. This gallery space is full of artists at work in their studios accented by a gift shop that carries a variety of members’ art throughout the year. You can pick up a gallery guide to First Friday’s offerings as well as browse the 45 light-filled studios, three galleries and a gift shop at McGuffey itself. The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia provides a sophisticated, high-tech home for the art contained within its historic walls. Exhibits include art from around the world dating from ancient times to the present. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum offers changing exhibitions, accompanied by related programs and publications. Summer exhibitions at the Fralin include “Reflections and Undercurrents: Ernest David Roth and Printmaking in Venice 1900-1940,” “Postwar British Prints” and new work by Cindy Bernard. Another unique local treasure of art is the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia. With a full program of exhibits, lectures, research and education programs, the Kluge-Ruhe collection has a lot to offer the visitor who’s interested in indigenous artwork. This summer’s special exhibits include “We Are Tiwi,” works by artists from the remote Tiwi Islands, with an opening reception on May 30. Les Yeux du Monde is worth the short drive north on Route 20. The gallery hosts “New Views in Still Life and Landscapes” May 16-June 15, “Amazonas in Color, Light, Les Yeux du Monde presents New Visions in Still Life and and Texture” June 20-July 20 and John Borden Evans’ Landscape: “A Day and A River” by Susan Mcalister “Near Walnut Creek” July 25-August 31. Warm Springs Gallery downtown features “Man’s Best Friend,” a collection of dog-inspired works from various artists and a fundraiser for the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, June 1-July 30, with an opening reception on June 6. Whether you’re merely appreciating or interested in purchasing, Charlottesville’s vibrant, robust art scene shouldn’t be missed. For more details, be sure to visit CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com. 26

Hip & Historic Downtown Stroll down the old-fashioned, brick-paved Historic Downtown Mall, a pedestrian-only walkway first created in the 1970s. Here you can catch street performers, browse art galleries and enjoy a shopper’s paradise. The Downtown Mall is a convenient and pleasant stop for finding unique treasures with its wide array of 120 charming shops. The perfect outfit to wear to a summer wedding is easy to find among our specialty boutiques. Looking for gifts? You’ll find toys for kids of all ages; art, crafts and antiques for the in-laws; and books, stationery and jewelry for your spouse. Wander a couple of blocks south to explore the Glass Building and the Warehouse District, where you’ll find artsy home decor, trendy clothes and tasty baked goods, all in converted warehouse buildings. If you’re downtown on Saturday, be sure to stop by the Charlottesville City Market. Located conveniently near the Downtown Mall in the Water Street parking lot in between Water Street and South Street, the market is a great place to commence your weekend activities. The 7am-noon Saturday morning market is a popular weekly event with locals and tourists alike. In addition to the variety of fresh produce, you’ll find locally made goods such as artisan-crafted pottery, jewelry and organic soap. There are vendors selling wonderful children’s clothes, including comfortable and cute outfits made with 100 percent cotton fabric and special gift sets that make the perfect baby shower gift! Or surprise a loved one with a freshly arranged bouquet of flowers, a beautiful photographic print or a piece of handcrafted jewelry. Save room for a jar of local jam, loaves of fresh bread and bakery treats and local meats and cheeses, and grab a breakfast taco, fresh-fruit popsicle or hot coffee and donuts to snack on while you shop. Be sure to stop for a bite to eat or a refreshing beverage at one of the 30 fabulous restaurants on the Historic Downtown Mall as well. The mall is home to some of the area’s top chefs and highest-quality cuisine. Enjoy comfort food and seasonal dishes while soaking up the lively ambiance. Be sure to ask for a table outside — a prime spot for people watching! You can make reservations for most places on the Mall or grab something to go and have a seat under the Pavilion. Picnics are most welcome at the free, live shows for Fridays After Five happening there all summer long.

Locally Crafted Begin in downtown Charlottesville and drive on Route 250 to the country town of Crozet and beyond to discover more shopping districts and take in some beautiful scenery, too. Plan your itinerary with the help of the Artisans Center of Virginia (ACV) the state’s official nonprofit craft organization dedicated to promoting Virginia artisans. The ACV has created the Monticello Artisan Trail, a map of destinations within the city of Charlottesville and throughout Albemarle and Nelson Counties that designates more than 80 regional attractions, including artisan studios, craft venues, orchards, vineyards, farms, restaurants, lodging and other points of interest. A diverse range of Central Virginia’s unique traditions and talents are represented on the trail — from a leather artist making custom personal and equestrian accessories by hand at a studio housed in an old train depot to a celebrated executive chef and decoy carver who hosts guests at a lovely property that includes a studio, a rustic cabin and a trout stream. As you travel along the trail, you’ll have the opportunity to meet some of these artisans and see them at work. Also be sure to drop in at some of the trail’s many businesses and craft venues that display and sell work from local ceramicists, weavers and furniture makers.

Best of the Brew Brews to Taste Charlottesville is proud to be home to a myriad of microbrewers, taphouses and establishments that specialize in crafting or carrying outstanding handmade beers and ciders. Thomas Jefferson took great interest in creating not only wines but beers as well. Monticello serves its own official beer: Monticello Reserve Ale, inspired by what Mr. Jefferson labored over and loved in a beer. Any visit wouldn’t be complete without ordering a mug of this heritage ale. Visitors and locals alike can now enjoy fabulous beers and historically crafted ciders from several local breweries and cideries. Many of these breweries and cideries include tasting rooms and restaurants, allowing guests to enjoy local brews while surrounded by great food, amazing music and stunning mountain views. The Brew Ridge Trail, which includes many of these destinations, starts in historic Charlottesville and meanders through scenic Albemarle and Nelson Counties. For a trail map and more info, visit BrewRidgeTrail.com. Additional local breweries and cideries are currently in the works, plus an area whiskey distillery is expected to open for tours in the near future.

Vineyard Tours & Tastings Vineyards Bountiful & Beautiful
Thomas Jefferson dreamt that Virginia wines would one day be plentiful and held in high regard, and today’s local vintners have accomplished that by producing wonderful, award-winning wines. The Monticello American Viticultural Area, which includes Albemarle and the surrounding counties, encompasses more than half of Virginia’s wine country and contains more than 1,000 stunning acres. Now the fifth-largest wine-producing state in the country, Virginia has received both national and international acclaim for its wines. More than 70 area vintners offer up tastings, tours, barrel and vertical flight tastings, multi-course wine-pairing meals and special events for connoisseurs and novices alike. (See the Regional Wine Trail map on page 48.) Our region’s many boutique wineries offer a wonderful selection of wines to share with friends and family, perfect for the summer season.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style
Dining Room at Monticello: Monticello/Sequoia Design
Jefferson’s Love of Food & Wine Thomas Jefferson was sometimes called “America’s first wine expert” due to his extensive experimentation in viticulture and oenology. Be sure to check out Monticello’s vineyards near the extensive vegetable garden and the restored wine cellar in the passage beneath the house.
A platform above the brick floor allows visitors entry to the wine cellar to see what it looked like during Jefferson’s retirement years in the first part of the 19th century. Try out the model dumbwaiter in the “Crossroads” exhibit to see if you could have transported bottles of wine upstairs to guests without mishap! Afterwards, stop by the dining room to examine Jefferson’s original dumbwaiter, which has been restored to its original working condition. A spectacular sight awaits visitors in the dining room, which features walls painted a brilliant chrome yellow. The color — which replaced the Wedgewood blue that inspired so many

Monticello’s Wine Cellar Exhibit: Philip Beaurline, courtesy Monticello/Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Inc.
Virginia is considered the birthplace of American wine. While Jefferson’s desire to have great wines locally available was never fulfilled during his lifetime, thanks to his unrelenting pursuits we can all now raise our glasses and revel in his dream come to fruition. To ensure that this dream continues, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation has partnered with Piedmont Virginia Community College to create a training vineyard on Montalto, Jefferson’s “high mountain” overlooking Monticello. homeowners across the country — is not so new. It was chosen by Jefferson around 1815 to grace the walls that set the scene for many formal dinners, where rice soup, mutton and even a new treat — ice cream! — was served. The dining-room restoration was sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren and marked the first collaboration with Monticello curators and archaeologists with regards to the dining-room ceramics. Excavations showed that, in Jefferson’s retirement years, the family most often dined on pearlware, an English earthenware similar to porcelain but not as expensive. A set of green, shell-edged pearlware now graces the dining room, on loan from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Charlottesville lies within the great and beautiful county of Albemarle, whose rich agricultural history and farm community is well-loved and supported by our many local restaurants. Well before locavores arrived in the headlines, many of our restaurants were already building their reputations on the quality of the local food they supplied to their grateful customers. Area chefs take great pride in using only the freshest local produce and products. Enjoy seasonal dishes while soaking up the lively ambiance of downtown or delight in gourmet fare and get a taste for our local history at one of the many popular restaurants tucked in every corner of our community. It’s no wonder that Southern Living named Charlottesville one of the Top Ten Tastiest Towns in the South!

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, your new community is known for year-round natural beauty and small-city sophistication. Charlottesville has received countless accolades in recent years for a variety of reasons — from its delicious, locally sourced restaurants to its active, sports-centric community. USA Today recently featured Charlottesville as a great place to invest in a home. “Take one of the nation’s quintessential college towns, throw in a big slice of American history, add golf courses and wineries, set it all in prime horse country, and the result is Charlottesville,” says Larry Olmsted for USA Today. We couldn’t agree more! You’ll find that locals go out of their way to make you feel at home here — whether it’s with a simple smile as you pass one another on the Downtown Mall or by providing detailed directions to the nearest hiking trail to spend a bright, spring morning. Now that you know the best places in town to celebrate your move to the area, check out the list to the right for the nitty gritty details of getting settled in your new home. We welcome you!

The University of Virginia is a bastion of tradition founded by Thomas Jefferson, the most popular man in town. Those who are fond of him often refer to him as TJ or Mr. Jefferson. Whether you’re preparing to enter its hallowed halls for a degree or enjoying a weekend in town, here is your guide to local lingo. We proudly cheer on our Orange and Blue, “The Cavaliers” — “Cavs” for short or “Wahoos.” What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “wahoos” during their fierce in-state rivalry back in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use to denote the University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers. The area on which UVA sits is called “Grounds,” not “campus,” and freshmen here are called “first-years.” The large, domed building with Mr. Jefferson’s great statue is the Rotunda. It faces a huge grass courtyard known as “The Lawn,” surrounded by historic residences that are still coveted student and faculty residences. From the steps of the Rotunda you can see “The Corner,” the area located at the intersection of University Avenue and the central entrance to UVA, the Honor Gate. Always abustle, the Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices and trendy shops that give it a cool vibe.

To see Grounds up close, take a guided historical tour of the Rotunda and Academical Village. They are offered daily and meet inside the main entrance of the Rotunda. Or you can choose to stroll the grounds on your own with a self-guided tour — no matter how you choose to explore, there are several attractions that you should not miss. The Rotunda is one of Charlottesville’s most iconic structures, designed by Jefferson after the Pantheon in Rome. It sits majestically on one end of the Lawn and was the original site of the school’s library. Jefferson himself is said to have handpicked every book that was originally housed in the domed structure. The Academical Village flanks the Rotunda and surrounds the rectangular Lawn. The village consists of 10 pavilions, each of which traditionally housed faculty and held classrooms for various subjects. The larger pavilions are linked by 54 smaller, single-student rooms. Be sure to stroll through the beautiful pavilion gardens and check out the self-supporting serpentine walls, designed by Jefferson. The design and shape are both aesthetic and functional. The S-shape allows for the wall to be only one-brick thick and mostly self-supporting, as well as offering alcoves for beautiful trees and colorful flowers in these classically designed gardens.

The University Chapel is another must-see, though it wasn’t part of the original plans for the school. This beautiful stone chapel was a late addition to the University, built in 1889. While no longer used for services, it is still a popular place for weddings. (Bookings are chosen by lottery a year in advance so, if you’re interested — plan early!)

The University of Virginia has also been home to a number of recognizable names over the years. Many writers have walked the grounds, including David Baldacci and Linda Fairstein. William Faulkner was UVA’s first Writer-in-Residence. Accordingly, the Special Collections Library has a significant collection of Faulkner’s personal papers and manuscripts, as well as one of Faulkner’s jackets! The school has also educated its fair share of media and entertainment personalities, such as Tina Fey and Katie Couric. Some other big names include Robert F. Kennedy and Charles T. Pepper, the namesake of the soft drink Dr Pepper. President Woodrow Wilson attended in 1879, but left due to health reasons. And it would be remiss not to mention the university’s most famous drop-out, Edgar Allan Poe!

To prevent parking frustration, here are a few tips to keep in mind while visiting the University of Virginia. First, there are two parking garages open to visitors at an hourly rate: the Central Grounds garage on Emmet Street (located underneath the University Bookstore and near the Lawn) and the Culbreth Road garage (convenient for visiting the Fralin Museum of Art or attending a play at Culbreth Theatre). UVA also offers a temporary parking permit for the lots around John Paul Jones Arena, ideal for folks visiting for a half-day or more.

Becoming a Local Why Not Retire Here?

With temperate climates, beautiful scenery, expert medical care and a thriving cultural environment, it should come as no surprise that Charlottesville is a popular retirement location. Learning institutions such as Piedmont Virginia Community College and UVA’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offer courses to suit all interests — “Understanding Opera” and “Genetics Then and Now” are two recent OLLI classes — and its outings have included adventures in Memphis, Greece and Brazil. Many local gyms and fitness facilities also offer senior classes. And, the golf courses, tennis courts and walking trails are very popular, too. Where to Retire magazine recently named Charlottesville as one of the country’s “Dynamic Locales For Walkable Living.” Plus, there are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available locally, and our award-winning Senior Center has a great mix of programs and travel choices, such as a jaunt to Nashville or a trip to Ireland. Charlottesville is also proud to be home to two great medical centers, the University of Virginia Health System and Martha Jefferson Hospital, both offering outstanding health care on the cutting edge of medicine. With the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport as a convenient gateway to a world of destinations and the coast only a couple of hours away, it’s no wonder Money Magazine rated Charlottesville as the #2 place to retire young! If you treat your furry friends like family, you’ll fit right in here! Take a stroll along the brick-paved Downtown Mall where your pup will be happy to find refreshment at the many water bowls shop owners place outside of their stores just for this purpose. During the warm months, well-behaved pets are allowed to join their owners in the outdoor seating areas of some of the area’s finest restaurants. Be sure to take your pooch to one of the local dog parks where they can frolic off-leash. Darden Towe Park, Azalea Park and Chris Greene Lake Park all include areas specific for dogs. While pets are allowed within nearby Shenandoah National Park, there are some trails where pets are prohibited, so be sure to check nps.gov/shen before you head out on your hike. There are also plenty of wineries in the area that are happy to accommodate owners and their pets, and some vineyards even host special pet-friendly events like Keswick Vineyards’ “Yappy Hours” on Sundays this summer, where visitors can bring their pets and check out lovable animals available for adoption through local shelters.

Becoming a Local How It All Started
N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection
Charlottesville, named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of England and founded in 1762, is an inspiring setting to call home, as is the surrounding Albemarle County, named in honor of William Anne van Keppel. He was the second Earl of Albemarle and served as Governor General of the county from 1734 to 1735. We’re in the center of Virginia, surrounded by gentle rivers, rolling green pastures, mild seasons and an easy two-anda-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. One reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city — just over 10.4 square miles, with 43,500 residents — but it has the trappings of a big one. Musical acts and dramatic performances, fine dining, lovely shops — all are available in abundance. Covering 726 square miles, the county’s population is more than double that of the city, at about 100,500. Both city and county are fascinating places to explore and wonderful locales to call home, and we welcome you!
