Bazaar 2014

To the Charity Foundation of the International Women’s Club, Sofia To the participants and guests of the annual Charity Bazaar Dear Deputy Prime Minister, Your Excellencies, Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends, I am delighted to address the organisers from the International Women’s Club, Sofia as well as all the guests and participants in the Annual Charity Bazaar. It was with pleasure that I accepted the invitation to be a patron of this year’s Bazaar when we mark its 20th anniversary. Over these years it has established itself as one of the major charity events in Bulgaria and also as an initiative which reminds our society of the meaning of words such as “unity” and “solidarity”. Dear participants, Thanks to your dedication, donations and charity work this event will yet again attract thousands of Bulgarians who in turn will help thousands of others. The initiatives that you support would touch every person. The funds raised during the bazaar will go towards supporting and assisting the needs of the most vulnerable groups of our society: children, elderly people, people with disabilities, etc. This year we were able to see how united we could be. Unfortunately, the occasions for that were sad: natural disasters and accidents. However, timely support can never be forgotten. Bulgaria was overwhelmed by a sense of compassion and heartedness. Now, when the most important Christian holiday is approaching, this charity event is an opportunity to unite the efforts of people of various nationalities around a particular cause. It is also an opportunity, thanks to the support of Embassies, donors, volunteers and business organisations, to appreciate various cultures and national traditions. I wish you in the coming hours to put smiles on the faces of all bazaar guests and instill the Christmas spirit and hope in them. May we keep these emotions throughout the whole year so that miracles and good deeds happen every day. 7 December 2014

Hello, I have the privilege of being the President of the IWC at the time of our 20th Annual Charity Bazaar. I am proud that, over the 20 years that the annual bazaar has been organised, it has become the single biggest charity event in The Balkans and more than 2million leva has been raised to support those who are vulnerable and needy here in Bulgaria. Thanks to the stallholders, sponsors, donors and volunteers this has been another amazingly successful year. On the day we raised 12,000 BGN more than last year and, together with direct financial donations, we have already surpassed the total amount of money raised during the last bazaar, with more pledged money still to come in. I am grateful to H.E. The President of Bulgaria, Rosen Plevneliev, for his patronage and for the support of those from his office, some of whom contributed and volunteered during the bazaar day and to Deputy Prime Minister, Meglena Kuneva, for opening our bazaar and for being such a generous and interested supporter of our efforts. Thank you to all the Ambassadors and diplomatic staff, many of whom worked on stalls during the day and many thanks also to the international and local community who gave so generously of their time and money. I must also thank the organisers of the event Angela Bird, our Bazaar Co-ordinator and her deputy Toi Costello and their team, for their hard work in making this year’s bazaar run so smoothly and with such spectacular success. And finally, to our partners, sponsors and donors, our grateful thanks for all your support. We couldn’t do it without you! Kind regards Lynne Godding IWC President 2014-2015

”We make a living by what we get, “ But we make a life by what we give. Winston Churchill

Distinguished IWC members, donors and volunteers! Ladies and Gentlemen! As a Charity Chairperson of International Women’s Club – Sofia I would like to seize the opportunity to congratulate all of you for supporting the 20th Annual Charity Bazaar – an outstanding fundraising event with huge impact over the Bulgarian community. Here are dozens and dozens of charitable organizations all around the country, but what makes us unique and one of quite few is that everything we do is completely on volunteer bases and I am sure that all of us are very proud to be part of this astonishing event and organization. Thanks to our joint efforts this year again several hundred people will receive support and opportunity to live with dignity and in conditions that all human beings deserve. The money collected during the Annual Charity bazaar 2014 will be donated for projects focused on humanitarian assistance, support to disabled people, social integration of orphan teenagers, equal access to education and educational & training and women’s issues such as funding of free medical exams and programs aimed to help women who are victims of violence. For our long history since we started our existance as an organization we have received numerous good reviews, but the most important recognition for us remains finding out that through our efforts we have managed to change someone’s life in a positive direction. We are proud that we are able to share many good examples - from the orphan scholarship program to free examinations against breast cancer carried out nationwide and many others. In closing, I thank all of you, our sponsors, donors and volunteers, for your kind support and hard work. I do believe that every lev given to charity is a lev wrapped in love. Thank you all for being with us, joining us, and supporting our beginnings. Thank you all! Maria Ilieva, MBA Charity Chairperson International Women’s Club – Sofia

Dear Friends I am continually amazed, and appreciative of just how the international and local community here in Sofia come together every year to raise an extraordinary amount of money for the charities supported by the International Women’s Club charity foundation. Celebrating our 20th year, the 2014 charity bazaar was no exception. The money raised on the day came from ticket sales, 66 stalls, of which 44 were representing 49 countries, 8 IWC stalls run by the members and 11 charity stalls. This, together with donations received directly into the IWC foundation account has brought our total to an incredible 320,000BGN! If our stallholders did not have enough to do, this year we set them a task to decorate a ‘20’ logo to celebrate our 20th anniversary. This challenge was taken up with great enthusiasm and we were rewarded with colourful, creative and talented designs, the results of which you can see here in our brochure. It was a very difficult task to pick a winner, with all the bazaar team having their favourite, in the end our runners up were in fifth place, Germany, there was a tie for fourth place between Philippines, France and Slovak Republic. Our third place was Mexico and taking second place was Turkey. You can see all the 20 logos on the back page of the brochure. Our winning design was from Viet Nam and features on our front page. I would also like to applaud the army of volunteers who come to entertain us. Every year our stage gains in popularity providing something for everyone. For the second year running, the great Sofia Brass Orchestra played at the opening of the bazaar and then we continued onto the stage with a full day non stop show of dancing, singing and variety acts from the traditional to the modern. I would like to personally thank all our members, stallholders, volunteers and ambassadors together with our sponsors, donors and partners, without who’s commitment this event could not take place. Last but not least, I extend a heartfelt thank you to our mayor Jordanka Fandakova and the Municipality of Sofia for their consistent support of this initiative. Angela Bird Bazaar Coordinator 2014/2015

Dear Ladies & Gentlemen, Happy New Year to one and all. May 2015 be filled with magical moments, good health and happiness. I would like to express my sincere thanks for your participation at our 20th Charity Bazaar. What a memorable day! And what a result – on the day our total was approximately 12,000 Bgn more than last year’s and the grand total as of 19 January 2015 came in approximately 7,000 Bgn over last year’s result too! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow IWC board members, the bazaar team, the stallholders and the team at Societe Generale Expressbank for their co-operation and assistance over the past several months and especially the day of the Bazaar. And a very special ‘Thank You’ to everyone who helped sorting and counting in Treasury. Because of your enormous efforts and efficiency we were able to operate smoothly. I wish you all a very successful year. Best wishes Sibeal Reynolds Treasurer 2014-2015

Still going strong

Argentina I was very glad to be the stallholder for the Embassy of Argentina for the 4th consecutive year, on the occasion of the IWC Bazaar 20th Anniversary. Congratulations to the IWC and Bazaar teams for their outstanding effort and success, and my recognition to all Bulgarian and international sponsors and volunteers. Since I arrived as the Ambassador’s wife four years ago, after several other postings, our main task has been to strengthen even more the relationships between our two counties. In that sense, the Embassy of Argentina could not be absent from the most important charity event in Bulgaria. I also became a member of the IWC right after our arrival. Argentina was the first Latin-American country to establish diplomatic relations with Bulgaria in 1931 at the time when thousands of Bulgarians, like many other Europeans, were migrating to my country in search for a better life. A few of their descendants returned to Bulgaria at some point, and for me it is moving to see them come to our stall every year to revisit Argentinean flavours, images, music and old family memories. As one of the biggest food exporters, Argentina is present at the Bazaar with some of the products found in the Bulgarian market, such as our world famous wines, Hogareñas crackers, dulce de leche (milk caramel), mate (our national green tea), as well as our home made alfajores and beef empanadas. I am very happy to see that the public are already familiar with their high quality and, as “faithful customers”, they come to our stall every year for their favourite products. As regards cultural expressions, we are proud to offer books of the best Argentinean literature recently translated into Bulgarian, thanks to one of my country’s programs of support to translations. In addition, the emblematic and passionate dance of Buenos Aires city, tango, is always part of the Bazaar entertainment program, thanks to our generous friends from Sofia tango academies and clubs. We are very pleased to see how popular tango has become in Bulgaria, to the extent that Argentine Tango Day is celebrated in a big dancing event (milonga) every December 11th, only a few days after the Bazaar. The Embassy of Argentina is the patron of the public School 90, located in Lyulin, named after our national hero, General José de San Martín. Under one of our cooperation programs, the schoolchildren are motivated to make Christmas art crafts destined to be sold at their own corner in our stall for the good cause of helping other children in need. This humanitarian action has already become a tradition at School 90 and even some of the students and parents happen to be volunteers. The schoolchildren earned an extra merit in the last Bazaar since they were in charge of creating the 20th Anniversary decorations. I feel very privileged and honored to be part of the IWC biggest solidarity project, which brings the spirit of Christmas to life every December, even considering all the work it implies in organization, cooking, logistics, and public relations. I am most grateful to our kind sponsors and to the invaluable help of our volunteers, including all the members of our Embassy. Raquel Arévalo de Azrak Spouse of the Ambassador of Argentina

Greece My experience from the International Women’s Club (IWC) Christmas Bazaar in Sofia Theologia Voulgari Stallholder for Greece 2013 & 2014 First Secretary for Economic & Commercial Affairs Embassy of Greece in Sofia My work for the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Greece in Sofia brought me in Bulgaria in 2009. Since then my experience with the IWC Bazaar has always been more than positive with my involvement evolving from visitor to volunteer and finally, during the past two years, to Greek stallholder. And though it has been a very pleasant experience visiting the bazaar I should say it was much more fulfilling to be a part of it and to contribute to its noble causes which is to provide help and support to Bulgarians who need it the most – people with disabilities, children, women and the elderly. All these years I immensely enjoyed the spirit of solidarity and the happy amiable international atmosphere created by the volunteers coming from a range of nationalities, cultures and religions with a strong willingness to work towards a common good goal. And to my great satisfaction I have noticed continuous improvement especially in terms of visitors and volunteers embracing and supporting this charity event which has achieved the highest visibility and attractiveness in Bulgaria. Within my capacity as Greek stallholder I had the privilege to experience first hand the enthusiastic support of the vibrant Greek community in Sofia which provides each year a great number of volunteers. I should also acknowledge the generous and continuous support of the Greek business. As my mission in the Greek Embassy includes the promotion of economic and business ties between Greece and Bulgaria I have a pretty good picture how dynamic these ties are, but this was an opportunity to see this solid relationship further expanding with the Greek businessmen in Bulgaria showing their social responsibility and commitment to the Bulgarian society in spite of conditions of economic crisis and hardship. I believe through the coordinated participation of the Greek community and businesses we achieved our goal to raise a considerable sum of donations offering at the same time to the visitors a true taste of Greece. Our stand guests enjoyed a variety of original and quality Greek foods, drinks and artifacts, numerous opportunities presented through our tombola to enjoy popular tourism destinations in Greece and a show of Greek traditional dances well-known and popular to Bulgarians who often travel to our country for vacation. As I complete my post in Bulgaria in 2015 my participation in the Sofia IWC Bazaar will surely be one of the most interesting and fulfilling experiences I will carry with me from Bulgaria and I can only wish wholeheartedly to IWC that each year all of its efforts and charity activities bring even greater good to the lives of the less fortunate.

Italy My first experience with the IWC Charity Bazaar was in 2001. My husband had just been posted to Sofia and we stayed for a few days at the Sheraton Hotel while looking for a place where to move. We saw a long line of people waiting to enter - the bazaar was small at that time (it fit in one hall of the hotel), but the interest to it was already huge! By the way, Italy was not represented... The number of Italian ladies in Sofia was definitely limited. There were just six of us, but we decided to take part in the following edition. So in 2002 we had a four meter table, where we sold homemade bread, limoncello and some Christmas crafts. We prepared everything ourselves and were selling it having big fun. Anyway, it was when the Embassy started supporting our initiative that we could count on more donations, becoming year after year more ‘professional’ and the Italian stall turned into one of the main attractions of the Bazaar, with more than 100 donors and more than 50 volunteers working at the stall. Bazaar preparations Each year Bazaar preparations start in April, when a new Bazaar Coordinator is being elected by the members of the IWC. A Bazaar team is then assembled by volunteers from the club and different responsibilities are assigned like the coordination between different stalls, ticket sales, entertainment programme, media coordination, etc. Around June first time planning of the event begins with sending invitations to the embassies and the international community, and organizing of stallholders meetings takes place. Individual stalls are being organized by different nationality groups, usually directly by the embassies themselves or supported strongly by embassy staff. In 2014 the representatives of the following countries and communities have joined their efforts to support the event:

Argentina, Armenia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, Moldova, Morocco, Norway, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Seychelles, Slovakia, South Africa, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, USA, UK, Venezuela, Vietnam.

The People

According to statistical data linked to ticket sales from the British Council during the 20th annual Charity Bazaar about 10,000 people came through the door of the International Expo Center. Many chose to buy their tickets in advance at one of the four available ticket points around the centre of Sofia in order to avoid queuing on the day. About 50 nationalities were represented, proudly showcasing national costumes, songs and dance, as well as their traditional cuisine, creating a rare opportunity for the visitors to become engulfed in a dazzling, colourful and vibrant atmosphere. Many weeks of preparations finally culminating into just six hours of an intense experience of unfamiliar sounds, shapes, tastes and rhythms – exhausting‌and totally worth it!

The Stalls

The task to coordinate more than 60 stalls was not an easy one. There were more than 40 countries, charity stalls, IWC stalls, all taking part of this multicultural event. This was the best part of it, all the different cultures getting together for this big charity project. It is amazing to see how so many different people are working with such a big enthusiasm, always smiling, helping each other, happy to raise money for the children and women with unfortunate circumstances. We forgot about all our daily problems and our differences for a while; we forgot how much we worked during the previous month, and we danced, ate and drank together for a day and at the end, we were all proud of our contribution to a better world. I would like to take the chance to personally thank all the stallholders, volunteers and sponsors for the big success of the 20th Anniversary IWC Charity Bazaar. See you next year at the 21st IWC Charity Bazaar! Toi Castello Stallholder’s Coordinator 2014

The skills and creativity

The level of skill and craftsmanship and the amazing originality that goes into creating the items on display never seizes to surprise the visitors of the IWC Charity Bazaar. The intricacy and ingenuity of the doll characters, pottery, jewellery, gifts and numerous artifacts, as well as the ornaments, decorations and colours used in food preparation continuously prove to be truly spectacular.

The Stage We had about 35 acts on the stage in hall 4 and they represented traditional, pop, classic music and dance from all over the world. About 300 people contributed to the entertainment in groups or individual performances, as well as workshops, sharing their talent, their passion and their positive vibes in order to keep us all entertained, smiling and make it an unforgettable event indeed. The greatest challenge I faced was how to fit all those amazing and gifted people who desired to participate, many thanks and apologies to those who did not make it this year. Thanks to the bazaar team, stallholders, volunteers for the support and to all the participants for sharing their magic and making the world a cosier place!
