Where to Find Windows Registry Files?

The first thing for finding out your Windows Registry files is to understand what Windows platform you are using. Presently, all versions of Windows are built from 2 Windows platforms: Windows 95 platform and Windows NT platform. http://www.winregcleaner.net/

Windows 95 Platform

Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, and ME are all built on Windows 95 platform and use the Windows 95 Kernel32.dll. In Windows 95, 98, and 98 SE, you will find only 2 Registry files, System.dat and User.dat. Windows ME has 3 Registry files, Classes.dat, System.dat and User.dat. You can locate the Registry files in the folder “C:\Windows”. For users not currently logged on, the User.dat file will be located in the “Windows\ Profile\ ” folder. All these files attributes are Hidden, System, and Read Only. You need to set Windows Explorer to see the hidden files. http://www.winregcleaner.net/

Windows NT Platform

Windows XP, 2000, 2003 and Vista are all built on Windows NT platform and make use of the NT Kernel32.dll, even so the Kernel32.dll continues to be updated / modified for every Windows os. You can find several Registry files in Windows XP, 2000, and 2003. These types of files are named with no file extension and are saved in the folder “Windows\System32\Config. They are Software, System, SAM, Security, Default, and UserDiff. There does exist one additional Registry file named NTuser.dat. NTuser.dat is located in the users folder within the Documents and Settings folder in Windows XP, 2000 and 2003. Each and every user has their own NTuser.dat file. It keeps all configurations which every user chooses; those configurations will override settings saved in the System file. http://www.winregcleaner.net/
