NEIS SOCCER FIELD Illinois Wesleyan soccer has been played at the lighted Neis (“nice”) Soccer Field since August 2000. Tom and Marilyn Neis of McHenry, Ill., are 1970 and 1971 IWU graduates, respectively, and their daughter, Melissa, is a 2002 grad. Another daughter, Elizabeth, played soccer at Millikin and Tom’s grandmother, the late Jeanette Neis, was a 1927 IWU alumna.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY

I

llinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about 2,100 undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 academic departments, and in the Schools of Art, Music, Nursing and Theatre Arts. The 2004 edition of The Fiske Guide to Colleges lists the University as one of its 22 “best buys” among the nation’s private colleges, describing Illinois Wesleyan as “at once cozy and diverse, loaded with opportunities for ambitious students.” Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the central feature of every student’s education, IWU also provides opportunities for professional and pre-professional preparation. The student-faculty ratio of 12-to-1 means that the University’s students are active participants in their education, often working individually with faculty members on research. As a residential university, Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrant campus environment in which rich co-curricular offerings complement the primary academic mission. About 30 percent of each graduating class goes on to graduate school, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medical schools, and in other advanced degree programs. Facilities: The new (opened in 2013) State Farm Hall has 19 technology-rich classrooms, seminar rooms and a small auditorium style case study classroom. One of the special features of the four-story building is the number of individual and group study areas available for student use. State Farm Hall houses economics and educational studies research labs, conference rooms and faculty offices for the Business Administration and Economics departments. On the north end of the Eckley Quadrangle, State Farm Hall will also provide a stunning backdrop for Commencement ceremonies. The $25 million Ames Library opened in 2002 and a $6 million renovation of the Memorial Gym resulted in the Hansen Student Center, a facility designed to meet the social, recreational, and educational needs of IWU students. IWU’s attractive and wellmaintained 73-acre campus saw approximately $51 million in new construction in the 1990s, including the Shirk Center for Athletics and Recreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learning and Research (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a residence hall, accommodating 118 students in suite-like apartments (1997). The Shirk Center was funded in part by a $5 million gift from the Russell and Betty Shirk Foundation of Bloomington. The Shirk family owns Beer Nuts, Inc.®, the Bloomington-based snack food company. The two-level, 135,344-square foot complex seats 2,680 in its performance arena, and contains four multi-use

RICHARD F. WILSON, PRESIDENT Richard F. Wilson became the 18th president at Illinois Wesleyan in July 2004. Since 1978 Wilson has served in a number of roles at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, most recently (since 1996) as Vice President of the U. of Illinois Foundation. He was responsible for all private leading campus efforts to achieve its $1 billion goal as part of its comprehensive campaign. From 1986 to 1994, Wilson was Associate Chancel-

courts for tennis, volleyball, basketball, as well as racquetball courts, a 200-meter track, a training room and wellness center, classrooms, and other facilities. In 1999 the Jack Horenberger Baseball Field was opened, which paved the way in 2000 for new softball and soccer fields. The Center for Liberal Arts houses classrooms, and facilities for social science, humanities, business and economics. Distinguished Speakers: In the past few years, IWU has hosted a number of outstanding speakers, including former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen, authors Maya Angelou and Kurt Vonnegut, and film directors Kevin Smith and Spike Lee. Accomplished Alums. Illinois Wesleyan alumni of distinction include Edward B. Rust, Jr., ’72, president and chief executive officer of Bloomington-based State Farm Insurance; Jack Sikma ‘77, seventime NBA All-Star and current assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves; Dawn Upshaw ’82, a two-time Grammy-award winning singer with the New York Metropolitan Opera; Frankie Faison ’71, who has appeared in the films “Silence of the Lambs”, “The Thomas Crown Affair” and “Coming to America”; Steve Vogel ’68, author of the best-selling true crime book “Reasonable Doubt”; and Richard Jenkins ’69, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his starring role in the 2008 movie “The Visitor.” lor, leading effortrs to incorporate computing technologies into instruction and providing oversight of intercollegiate athletics. In 1994, he became Associate Chancellor for Development and Deputy Director of the University of Illinois Foundation. Since 1981, Wilson held and adjunct teaching position in the College of Education, most recently as Adjunct Professor of Higher Education. Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Alderson-Broaddus College (W.Va.). He then pursued advanced degrees from the University of Michigan, earning both master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education. Wilson and his wife, Pat, have two children, Adam and Rachel.

KYLE SCHAULS, HEAD COACH Kyle Schauls, a former Division III player at Wartburg and Division I assistant at Western Michigan, has been chosen as the new men’s head soccer coach at Illinois Wesleyan University, IWU athletic director Dennie Bridges announced today (July 7, 2014).

University.

Schauls replaces Ryan Lakin, who left last month to become head men’s soccer coach at Aurora

In 2013 Schauls was an assistant coach at the University of Rochester with a team that finished 15-3-2, went 10-0-1 at home, won the University Athletic Association championship and lost 1-0 to Montclair State in the round of 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament. “Kyle has a Division III playing background and his experience at Rochester means he has a understanding of recruiting at an outstanding school,” said Bridges of the former goalkeeper at Wartburg. “We look forward to having him lead the IWU men’s soccer team to conference championships and beyond.”

in Waterloo, Iowa, where he participated in all phases of coaching and specialized in goalkeeper instruction and training. West High produced an all-conference goalkeeper in both 2008 and 2009, and Schauls was a member of the 2009 Mississippi Valley Conference Coaching Staff of the Year. He has also coached at the No. 1 Soccer Camps in Fulton, Missouri, and Kenosha, Wisconsin. Additionally, he founded the Cedar Valley Goalkeeper Camp for youth goalies in Waterloo, Iowa. At Wartburg, Schauls was a goalkeeper and a member of three consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament qualifying teams. He was also an Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference selection in his senior season. Schauls earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Wartburg in 2010 and a master’s degree in sport management from Western Michigan in 2012. He has earned both the National Coaching Diploma and National Goalkeeping Diploma from the NSCAA.

From 2010 to 2012 Schauls was an assistant at Western Michigan, where teams were a combined 27-26-7 and were regular contenders at the top of the Mid-American Conference. The WMU 2012 team posted an 11-6-2 record, spent 12 straight weeks in the top 10 of the NSCAA Great Lakes Regional rankings, and received votes for the national top 25 for three weeks during the season. Schauls worked closely with the Bronco goalkeeping unit, which posted a .91 GAA on the season, the Broncos’ lowest mark since 1989. His other responsibilities included overseeing the areas of compliance, recruiting, travel, academics, equipment, video analysis, camps, community outreach, and scouting. In 2011, WMU made its second straight appearance in the Mid-American Conference championship game as the Broncos ousted defending national champion Akron in the semifinals. WMU also posted a signature regular-season win over in-state rival Michigan, beating the Wolverines for the first time ever in Ann Arbor. Schauls’ previous coaching experience includes four seasons (2007-10) as the varsity assistant at West High School
