The three long months of Summer in one issue. Tough job right? Well that’s what us IZE girls have set out to achieve. Welcome to IZE magazine, written by two bored Brisbanites who love fashion, music, film and art. We have a lust for life (thanks for the inspiration Iggy Pop) and our magazine is online and free. It is a reflection of the best parts of our personalities and what we are inspired by. What does Summer feel like to you? Nicole and Madeline xxxx PHOTOGRAPHY Anabelle von Frankenberg

Atripwithsid
Atripwithsid came off as effortlessly cool but consciously put together. Appearing laid back and chilled out, their passion for music was obvious when they started speaking about their band. Nicole Pires interviewed Saagar Chandra (Guitar) and Nic Stewart (Drums) from the Alternative/Punk/Post-Hardcore band. The band also consists of Jacob Lihou (lead vocals), Liam Cassidy (Bass Guitar) and Lachlan Sturre (Guitar).
Saagar Chandra (left) and Nic Stewart (Right) Atripwidsid has evolved a lot over the years. What makes your current lineup so unique? SAAGAR: Well we’re all a lot closer. Initially I wasn’t close with any of the people in the band up until this year. But now Nic, Jacob, Liam and Lachy are really good friends of mine so I think we just have really good chemistry together. On a scale from 1 to 10, how does playing in Church halls compare to your most recent gig at the Brisbane Powerhouse? NIC: Church halls, when was that? SAAGAR: That was your birthday. Don’t you remember?
At the Aspley Uniting Church.
Any particular musicians?
NIC: Yeah (laughs). That was pretty fun.
SAAGAR: I’m really influenced by Paul Banks and by Interpol in general—their whole approach to the song writing process.
SAAGAR: No it wasn’t! NIC: Not for you guys but for me it was alright. And the powerhouse? NIC: Ahh… I mean a lot of cool people have played at the Powerhouse!
If you met the ghost of Jimi Hendrix, what would you say to him? SAAGAR: Teach me guitar! What one band would you love to see reunited/brought back from the dead?
SAAGAR: Yeah the Powerhouse gig was actually really interesting. It was our first proper performance.
SAAGAR: The Beatles.
NIC: Yeah. It was kind of a letdown.
So what’s next from these five suburban Brisbane boys?
SAAGAR: It wasn’t the greatest of gigs. It wasn’t badly organised, it’s just that there wasn’t good communication. We didn’t have the right kind of gear when we got there and we just had to make do. That’s fair enough. So you can tell me the truth, do any members in Atripwithsid use the band to pick up chicks? NIC: Liam probably. (Both laugh). SAAGAR: I’ve said it once. I was just like, “I’m in two bands.” NIC: Yeah, I think I’ve said it quite a bit. SAAGAR: It’s impressive. NIC: I know Lachy uses it all the time. Who are your inspirations as a band? SAAGAR: Oh its so diverse. There are so many. NIC: For me probably The Cure, and Angels and Airwaves for when I write lyrics.
(His brother yells out “pussy answer”)
SAAGAR: More songs, hopefully we will have an EP coming out soon. We’re getting into recording next year. NIC: Maybe playing with Sorry Socrates? Find Atripwithsid on Facebook: www.facebook.com/atripwithsid

Tattoos ROSES………………………………. I know I should be nicer to this variety of tattoo, unbelievably my mother has one, but they are tacky. And seriously, a tattoo just can’t be made classy. No point in trying. ROSARY BEADS…………………..
ARABIC WRITING………………………………………..
If you’re super religious then okay I don’t mind. But when someone who is practically atheist gets rosary beads tattooed on their neck, firstly they’re not worn there, and secondly, it would be cheaper just to wear them.
Again, do you really know what it’s saying? SOUTHERN CROSS……………………………………… Seriously, if you want to express your Australian pride, start supporting local produce. I suggest starting with Rivers or Rugs-a-Million.
BUTTERFLIES……………………… Tramp stamp, need I say more? Poor innocent butterflies… CHINESE WRITING AND SYMBOLS………………………… If you’re of culture, then I have no problem with it. If not, I bet you have no idea what they’re actually writing. For all you know the supposed “peace” symbol could actually say Ke$ha. Or something of that awful sort. Underage and nowhere to go….
Summer holidays are long. If you’re like us IZE girls, you’re underage with nowhere to go. Or if you’re of age, strapped on cash and sick of the goon of fortune, all the places on this list are free. So where to go?
NEW FARM…………………………………….. CEDAR CREEK………………………………… Those climbing trees at the park pretty much epitomize the best memories of my childhood. Believe me, the novelty never wears off. Catch a City Cat, rent out some friends, bring your skateboard if you’re hipster and a cricket set if you’re athletic and outdoorsy like that.
If you walk on the wild side, a day trip to Cedar Creek with friends is a great way to kill time in the Brisbane heat. Who needs diving boards at Splash when you can jump off high rocks into the huge waterhole? It’s sure to get your adrenaline pumping. WARNING: be careful of resident eels, snakes, sharp rocks and THE POWERHOUSE………………………….. bogans. Full of free events, The Powerhouse is an A LIBRARY……………………………………… aesthetically pleasing building which is The State Library is a cool place to hang good to take super indie photos at. For a out and get away from everything. Even more pricey option, grab a light my local library has TVs and Xbox’s to play refreshment at the restaurant. on. Or if you actually want to read a book then kudos, go chill in a library. WORDS Nicole Pires PHOTOGRAPHY Lauren Michelle Pires

What are your inspirations? I get inspiration from everything I see. I like to look at pictures but also people I see on the street, colours and everything around me gives me inspiration.
Where do you hope your photography will lead you? I hope that it will lead me to a job because I would love to be living while doing something I love. I also love to travel so hopefully it will lead me around the world doing editorials for magazines.
Did you always want to become a photographer? No. I only started taking photos a couple of years ago for a school project and discovered that I liked it. What is it like to look back on your older photographs? It’s really interesting to see how far I’ve come. I like to look back so I can learn from my mistakes. How would you describe yourself as a person? Creative, loud… a photography nerd? Film or digital? I haven’t had much experience in film, though I do own many film cameras so I should get onto it. For now I love digital though I would love to have the money for film. What does summer feel like to you? Summer feels like adventures and lazy afternoons.

Matisse: Drawing life exhibition GOMA Renowned French artist Henri Matisse has the rare ability to capture the essence of people and places that translates through his artworks. Looking through his plethora of paintings, sketches, prints and designs is like looking into the window of a house you pass on the street, glimpsing another life separate to your own. Portraits of strangers start to seem as though they are of someone you know. Sketching someone in exactitude is one thing, sketching someone in a way that transcends aesthetics and instead portrays a piece of their soul is another, much more incredible thing. The Matisse exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art was just that incredible. Walking amongst the walls of the gallery covered in Matisse’s loosely chronological work is like walking through history. Matisse’s works evoke so much emotion through the minimal yet powerful use of line and expressive colour. The captivating
experience culminates with ‘The Drawing Room,’ a large scale drawing studio with drawing stations equipped with paper, pencils and inspiration. Just sitting in the room sketching Matisse-esque objects like statues and vases, surrounded by Brisbane art enthusiasts of all ages and ability an experience in itself equates the joy the exhibition brought. Ending your day with a kind, world wisely looking man offering compliments on your sketch is never a bad thing. Even better is when the GOMA volunteers let you keep the pencil as a gift, which draws surprisingly beautifully. The exhibition features more than 300 drawings, prints and illustrated books by one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. It is completely worst the $16-20, challenging the saying ‘you can’t pay for happiness.’ The exhibition runs from 3rd December 2011 to 4th March 2012. If you want to feel blissfully enriched for the day, I suggest you go.

film...
Restless Gus Van Sant’s latest film Restless is a tale of unrelenting grief and impossible happiness. The Kids Are All Right’s Mia Wasikowska plays the part of a dying girl with three months to live. She befriends the morbid young man, Enoch, who has an obsession with death, attends stranger’s funerals and whose best friend is a ghost. With Wasikowska’s looming death, their love has a time limit making Restless undeniably heart wrenching and illfated. Gus Van Sant breaks away from
the long takes and sequences that characterise his films such as Gerry, Elephant, Paranoid Park and Last Days. Instead it harbours the more commercial appeal of his early film, Good Will Hunting. Where the film fails is that the quirky storylines don’t quite gel with the My Sister’s Keeper type plot. However, the film is still aesthetically pleasing with beautiful dialogue. It isn’t a movie that tries to dramatically break your heart, yet at the same time does. WORDS Nicole Pires

nicole’s summer playlist
Summer in the city, for me is a reflective time where I can gather my thoughts and think about the year passed. Sure it’s a good time to party, but LMFAO isn’t my choice of music to play in the car during the season. I’m a punk/rock girl at heart so there’s that influence along with some upbeat indie tunes to get in the holiday mood. Some old and some new, this is what I’ll be listening to this summer. Contact High—Architecture in Helsinki Yesterday—The Beatles
Taper Jean Girl—Kings of Leon Seaside—The Kooks
Reckless Abandon—Blink-182 Beach—Boy & Bear
