A Gude to Meditation for Beginners

Meditation offers a wide array of health benefits including reduced anxiety, lower stress levels, improved blood flow, and overall relaxation. Meditation can promote mental clarity to maximize daily tasks, and some of the most successful and productive people are

Sit in an upright, comfortable position or lay comfortably on your back on a yoga mat or cushion. Close your eyes and with every breath, focus your attention on the rhythm of your body. Your mind and body should be in total alignment despite what is happening in the world around you. Your job is simple – breathe -- that's it.

Start small!

Go in with a reasonable goal. During your first few meditations, set aside two minutes per day instead of thirty minutes or one hour. Aim for intentional, uninterrupted time either at the start of your day or before bed. Your first meditation should begin with a short time commitment and as the days and weeks pass, increase your time.

Same time, same place

Meditating at the same time in the same space will train your mind and body to fall into the flow without hesitation. Find a dedicated time and a clean room for your mental escape. A minimalist space creates relaxation.

Distractions are normal

Keep going. Your thoughts will be swirling during your first few meditations which is to be expected, especially if you’re constantly on autopilot. Quieting your thoughts is a skill that won’t come overnight, and even when you do find your stride, your attention will wander. Find your center and, of course, it goes without saying: silence your phone!

Use guided meditation

There are tons of apps that offer meditation support. From sensual music to voice instruction, and timers, a virtual guide can offer maximum benefits to keep you on track.

As easy as it seems, there is an art to meditation that can be frustrating in your first few sessions. Hang in there. One breath at a time. Consistency is key. Meditation is what you make of it, so be patient. The goal is total awareness of self-starting with good habits. Meditation is truly a practice that requires discipline (A journey in and of itself). Enjoy the path to aligning with your higher self.

FOODS TO INSTANTLY BOOST YOUR MOOD

In the words of GloRilla, “Every day the sun won’t shine, but that’s why I love tomorrows.” Bad days come and go, but tomorrow always brings with it a chance for a fresh start. But why wait to feel good? The older we get; the faster time seems to move. It’s never too soon to cherish the day.

Some things will always be beyond your control, like annoying coworkers, traffic jams, or random encounters with negative people; but there are simple things you can do to get your day back on track. Your relationship with food can play a large part in how you process life’s ups and downs.

Sugary snacks and processed foods with empty calories can make you feel sluggish, even irritable.

On your next shopping trip, load up on plenty of fish, nuts, low-fat dairy, fruits, and veggies. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic say that foods rich in Vitamin C, fiber, omega-3s, fiber, and potassium are known to jumpstart your mood. Incorporate more of these foods from the list below to usher in happy feelings, promote gut health, and give your mental health a nourishing treat.

. Spinach

. Broccoli

. Oranges

. Walnuts

. Eggs

. Tofu

. Turkey

. Bananas

. Avocado

. Pomegranates

. Salmon

. Apples

. Strawberries

. Lentils

. Dark chocolate

. Quinoa

It's important to note that food cannot prevent depression or mood disorders. Please consult a healthcare professional immediately if you're having a mental health crisis.
