I like consider Black womanhood to be this exclusive club that people are always trying to gain access to. Always trying to find the world we’re in.

istorically, black women have always been viewed as super strong beings, capable of birthing nations and holding the world on their shoulders. We have to be careful when playing into that narrative. Instead of embracing the traditional view of superwoman, I like to use this as a personal nod to myself, a pat on my back for living and thriving against all odds.

Our beautiful, melanin-infused skin is always popping, especially in the summer, but did you know there are ways to make it pop even more? If the Sun alone isn’t giving you enough bronzed goddess vibes or glowing skin, you can achieve it with a few select products, and here are some of our favorites!

1. Facial Bronzer A little more color never hurt anyone! If the sun hasn’t given you all the depth and “bronziness” that you’re looking for, all you need to do is invest in some bronzer! Choose a color that is 1-2 shades darker than you skin and focus the color on the perimeter of your face. Bronze up your forehead by staying near your hairline and bring it along the sides of your face. Hit the hollows of your cheek for a sunkissed look, but it’ll also lift your cheekbones and give you a chiseled look! One of our favorite facial bronzers is the Too Faced Dark Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer that comes in a kit equipped for multiple skin tones!
2. Body Bronzer When it comes to creating that perfect glowy and sun-kissed look, you can’t always leave it to your face to shine through! If you’re wearing shorts or a dress that shows off your décolletage, body bronzer will become your new best friend! Not only will it seem as if you got the perfect amount of sun, but it’ll give your body a beautiful glow. Instead of going with a powder like you would for your face, body bronzer is as easy as applying your lotion. Quick tip: Apply your body bronzers quickly because once they set, they’re not moving!

If you’re browsing through Sephora, one of our favorites is the Benefit Hoola Body Bronzer. Many of us are always trying to save a buck, so if you’re leaning towards the drugstore side, check out the Maybelline Master Strobing Liquid in Medium – Nude Gold or Deep – Gold.
3. Highlighter While facial bronzer will give you that sun-kissed look, you might be trying to glow from within. In order to achieve that with your makeup products, you’ll need a highlighter! When applying highlighter, the trick is to apply it to all the high points of your face. Using this trick will allow the sun to bounce off of these spots and give you the perfect glow. Be sure to highlight above your brow bone and the high points of your cheeks. For an extra glow, you can highlight the bridge and point of your nose and even your cupid’s bow. Watch out for the latter because you might come out looking like you have a milk mustache! Some of our favorite facial highlighters are TheBalm Betty-Lou Manizer, but if you’re headed to the drugstore, check out the Milani Golden Light highlighter! There’s no reason you shouldn’t be glowing this summer, and with these products, you’ll definitely be a bronzed goddess!

As much as we love our favorite bad gal Rihanna, the truth is, she wasn’t the first lady savage. There were black women who were doing, saying, and dressing how they wanted way before we heard “Needed Me”. Here are some of the baddest black women who have walked this earth.
Grace Jones
Move over Lady Gaga because Grace Jones was one of the first to rock quirky ensembles without giving a damn. You may know this Jamaican singer because she created the song “Pull Up to the Bumper”, a nightclub hit popular in 80’s and 90’s. Grace was also known for her peculiar features, she looks androgynous which made her even more interesting!
Nina Simone
Singer, songwriter, composer, and activist Nina Simone isn’t the woman to play with. She was born in a very religious home, as her father was a preacher, but desired to expand her talents to more than just gospel. To ensure her strict family didn’t know her intentions, she changed her stage name to Nina Simone. Eventually she ended up doing music in the jazz, classical, folk, r&b, and pop genres including her hits “Little Girl Blue” and “I Love You, Porgy”. Her interest in activism exponentially grew after giving a killer audition for a music school and not getting accepted due to the color of her skin.

Pam Grier
Pam was the poster child of what was called “the foxy lady” during the 1970’s. The 70’s was the era of the disco; when people wore bell bottoms and platform shoes. This was also a time when black women were becoming more successful in showbiz. Pam often played the ever so sexy disco queen who touted a gun around in case she needed to teach someone a lesson. You may know her from her roles in Foxy Brown and Coffy. She has also recently played roles in shows like “The L Word” and “Law & Order”.
Angela Davis
At a time when America seemed to be most brutal for African Americans, Angela Davis brought hope. Davis was a master scholar who studied various topics including philosophy. As a young girl she would gather the teens in her neighborhood in order to bring change and as an adult became one of the most notable activists of her time.
Josephine Baker
Ms. Baker was loved because of her raw talent but even more so; her carefree attitude. Women weren’t always placed at the top of the pedestal as they are today, in fact, they were expected to act extremely ladylike and looked down upon many times. “I wasn’t really naked, I simply didn’t have any clothes on” is one of her famous quotes when asked about a nude photo/performance; as if people were overreacting. She was known for jazz and pop dance performances most notable were her roles in “Jazz Cleopatra” and “Black Pearl”. Rihanna gets some of her inspiration from Josephine.

Dear White People In April 2017, Netflix premiered one of its newest series, “Dear White People.” Based on the novel by Justin Simien, the show goes into depth about the feelings of a group of black students attending a predominantly white Ivy League college. The show deals with issues such as using the ‘N’ word, black face, interracial dating, and police prejudice. The series stars Logan Browning as Samantha White and Brandon P. Bell as Troy Fairbanks. Nia Long also stars in the series as Neika Hobbs, a professor at the fictional Winchester University. 13th Another Netflix original on our list is “13th.” While it originally premiered at the New York Film Festival in September 2016, it was brought to a larger population when Netflix released it. Telling the chilling truth about the 13th Amendment, the film discusses the idea that although this amendment freed the slaves in 1865, the country still created a way to keep black people in chains, which came with the boom of the prison system. The documentary goes through time and shows how in the words of Barack Obama, the United States, which only has 5% of the world’s population came to have 25% of the world’s prisoners. Southside With You While we all love a good, fictional love story, why not dive into a real one? If you’re a lover of all things Obama, you’ll definitely appreciate this love story. Southside with You is the film based on the story of our 44th president, Barack Obama, and his wife, Michelle. Their story begins while they are both working at a Chicago law firm, Barack as an associate and

Michelle as a lawyer. Patrick Sawyer and Tika Sumpter star as Barack and Michelle Obama, respectively. The Getdown If you love music and you love the 70s, this Netflix Original Series is definitely for you! Set in the Bronx in the 1970s, “The Getdown” tells the story of a group of teenagers who band together to become musical sensations. In addition to giving us a look into the music of that time and location, it also provides a peak into the lives of those living in the South Bronx. Queen of Katwe Based on the novel by Tim Crothers, Queen of Katwe brings to life the story of Phiona Mutesi. Played by Madina Nalwanga, this young girl from Katwe, Uganda learns to play chess and excels at it, gaining her way to the World Chess Olympiads. Lupita Nyong’o stars as Phiona’s mother while David Oyelowo stars as her chess instructor. If you’re still in the mood for more shows and movies, check out the classic “The Bernie Mac Show” for a few old laughs or the newer family sitcom, “The Carmichael Show” for new ones. Breaking away from the traditional family sitcom, the Netflix Original Series “Chewing Gum” is a comedy about a sheltered, 24-year-old virgin who sets about losing her virginity. For those in the mood of looking at a little eye candy, be sure to catch “The Brothers” which stars Morris Chestnut, Bill Bellamy, and Shemar Moore.
