Activity Activity Time: 20 Minutes

by Girl Tyler

Do you know what the word self-esteem means? Well, basically it’s how you feel about yourself. We know you’re smart and awesome, but what you think about yourself is what truly matters. The WHO I AM activity is a friendly reminder of all the neat characteristics that make you the person you are. Some days will be hard and you may even feel down, but you’ll always have this as a reminder of just how cool you really are.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Paper (1 sheet)

Poster board (1 piece)

Glue

Photo of you

Markers or color pencils

Using the sheet of paper, write down every word or phrase you can think of that describes you. For example, we already know you’re beautiful, but are you also funny? A great drawer? Good at sports? Do you love to cook? Well, write it all down! Focus on good thoughts and positive things people have said about you. Put glue on the back of your photo and glue it to the poster board. Use the colored pencils to fill in space around the photo by writing words from your list. Ask your parent or guardian to help you hang the poster to remind yourself just how great you are – we knew it all along!

Little Sis, it’s that time again — the season will soon change from summer to fall. When you and your besties get together this school year, whether in person or online, you will want to look super cute. From your head to your toes, and everything in between, a new style can make you feel awesome! Everybody wants to be and look their best, right? Your Izzy and Liv sweatshirt will be perfect for the cool fall weather. Since you already have an idea about what to wear, how about we focus some attention on your hair. Here are a few ideas to try for fabulous Fall hair:

Headbands

Puffs

Are Very Cute

Are Perfect

Your Izzy and Liv headband will give your hair an extra special look. It will compliment your style whether you wear it with your hair super curly or pulled back. Either way, your hair will look amazing!

Afro puffs are definitely a princess perfect style for back to school. Change things up a bit by wearing your afro puffs in a frohawk. A frohawk is a hairstyle made up of afro puffs that go straight down the middle of your head. You will look lovely with this super sweet style.

Braids

Twists

Are Beautiful

Are Terrific

Braids sometimes take a long time to get done, but once they’re done, you can play and play without worrying about your hair for a long time. To find new braid styles, ask an adult to help you search online. A new braid style will look fantastic! To complete your new braid style, plan to add in beads, braid cuffs, or shells. Now, that’s a super cool way to showcase your Fall hair flare!

Just about everybody likes their hair in twists, but have you tried a twist out? A twist out is when your hair is twisted and then untwisted. When the twists are taken out, your hair looks really wavy and absolutely adorable. With a twist out, you can wear your hair in a wavy afro (like a crown), with a headband, with some braids added in, or just in ponytails.

About

Rockstar Girls from the Civil Rights Movement by Girl Tyler

H

ave you ever read stories about Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, John Lewis or Nelson Mandela? They are a few of the many great men who helped lead Black people closer to equality. But let’s not forget about the girls! Women and, yes, kids were just as important to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Times were scary but these rockstar girls were bold and fearless in their pursuit of freedom for Black people. Bottom line: You’re never too young to make a difference. Here are 5 historical books about women and girls that will help inspire you to make the world around you a better place.

Story Of Ruby Bridges By Robert Coles Back in 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges and her family moved from Mississippi to New Orleans for a better life in the racist South. When a judge says Ruby can attend first grade at William Frantz Elementary, an all-white school, Ruby is faced with angry mobs of parents who refuse to send their children to school with her. She became the first Black child in history to go to an all-white school.

ROSA By Nikki Giovanni She was more than tired. After she refused to give up her seat to a white person on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, Rosa Parks became one of the most important women in the American Civil Rights Movement. This middle-grade book is a tribute to her courageous action and the events that followed.

I am Harriet Tubman By Brad Meltzer This book highlights Harriet Tubman’s bravery and heroism in her movement to end slavery. She risked her life to free thousands of slaves by leading them through the Underground Railroad.

Someday Is Now: Clara Luper and the 1958 Oklahoma City Sit-Ins

by Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich More than a year before the historic Greensboro, NC sit-ins, a teacher named Clara Luper led a group of young people to protest Katz, a segregated drugstore, by sitting at its lunch counter.

When Marian Sang:

The True Recital of Marian Anderson By Pam Munoz Ryan Marian Anderson is known for her historic concert at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 with a crowd of 75,000 people of all races. This recital showcased the beauty of her voice, the strength of her character, and the struggles of pre-Civil Rights America.
