She showed the world that a beautiful brown girl can become a real prima ballerina. Misty is Tu-Tu Awesome!

Beyoncé

Leanna had a dream that she could have her own beauty product company and she worked to make that dream happen. This inspirational young entrepreneur built a company called Leanna’s Essentials to help black women take better care of their hair. Now, Leanna is older and she is still growing her business and living her dream. 5

Different Ways

to Wear Your Brown Sugar Tee What’s better than a cute tee? Adding some personality to it! Clothes are just another way to express yourself! Just consider it a part of art class! If you want to make a few cool changes to your tee, here are a few different ways you can wear it. You can easily customize your tee, but just remember to ask an adult for help before you start cutting up your tee!

Turn Into a Wide-Neck Top

Instead of wearing your tee as a classic tee, make it into a cute off-the-shoulder top! All you’d really need to do is cut around the neckline to make it larger. You can wear it with your favorite colored

Make It Into a Tank Top

Instead of needing a tank top, you can make your tee into one! With the help of an adult, what you’d need to do first is cut the sleeves off your tee. After, you just need

Add Cute Rips

This is the easiest way of them all! With a ruler, draw lines wherever you’d like to see rips. You can make then as big or as little as you want. After, just cut along the lines... and you’re done!

Fashion is fun and you should get to show off your personality with your clothes. Have fun with it! Show off who you are and remember to be careful as you customize your tee. 6

Girl on Fire:

How to be Your Own Person

by Saeeda Ruffin

by Saedda Ruffin

G

irls are awesome,

period. Each one is so unique. That uniqueness is exactly what makes them amazing! Sometimes, as girls get a little older, things seem to change a little bit, and they become unsure about almost everything...even how to be their own person. Growing up can be a little tough at times. It is easy to forget how great you are. But, Young Queen, you don’t want to do that! You might be faced with some new challenges with friends, school, or even boys. Whether things are going wonderfully or if they are kind of rough, you should always be true to yourself. So, to help you to feel good about being the real you, we have put together a few tips for how you can be your own person ALL. OF. THE. TIME.

8

Be Positive With Yourself It might sound a little weird, but it is very important for you to be as positive with yourself as possible. Talk to the fabulous girl that you see in the mirror every day. The girl in the mirror is YOU and you are perfect just the way you are. Tell the girl in the mirror that she is FANTASTIC! Tell her that she is BEAUTIFUL. Tell that girl in the mirror that she is UNIQUE. Don’t try to find what other people might think are “flaws.” No need to do that. You need to see the beauty in YOU.

You Know You Nobody knows more about you than YOU. The biggest part of being your own person is knowing that you are special and that you have a lot to offer this world that we live in. Do your best never to let other people tell you who you are. Girl, they can’t tell you who you are! They will never know everything about you. You’re the only one who knows that.

Believe In Yourself People who are their own person know that they have to believe in themselves. That can get a little bit hard sometimes, especially when you get around negative people. But, even better...don’t be around negative people.

Choose Friends Who Are Good People And Good Friends The people who you are around should help you to be the best that you can be. Your friends should be as positive as you and they should accept you as you are. You should never have to change who you are to be friends with someone. Real friends let you be your own person. If someone cannot accept you without trying to change you, then, they are not worthy of your friendship. You deserve to have awesome people in your life because you are AWESOME!

Trust Your Heart You are so intelligent! Yes, Girl...YOU! You know all of your hopes and dreams. But, above all of that, you know your own heart. So, when it comes to figuring out if something is right or wrong for you, remember what you have in your heart. You have good things in your heart like love and happiness. Believe in those things because they are what is inside of you. 9

The Fu ture is Bright

4 talented tweens by Saeeda Ruffin

There are so many awesome brown girls on this planet! These super talented young ladies are doing amazing things. From inventing to dancing and to simply inspiring, beautiful brown girls to rise to the top. They will never make any apologies for being great and they won’t let anybody stop their shine….and neither should you. Girl, just like them, you were born to rise! We wanted to spotlight a few phenomenal young tweens who have the world talking about their black girl magic:

There Is No Limit To This Skye Skye Turner is a 10-year-old singer who became famous through Youtube videos of her singing at events. When she first started performing, people noticed that she had a really BIG VOICE for such a little girl. She was featured on The Steve Harvey Show where she sang with her idol, the famous singer Patti LaBelle. Since then, Skye has been touring with other singers, including singing legend, Stephanie Mills. Skye is definitely a rising star!

Flex Like Kheris Black will always be beautiful. Kheris Rogers is the 12-year-old fashion icon behind the “Flexin’ In My Complexion” clothing line. Kheris said that she was teased for her dark skin. We know that it sounds ridiculous! But, Kheris has gotten the last laugh. Instead of feeling bad about her perfectly melanated skin, she got a t-shirt that read “Flexin’ In My Complexion.” The rest is fashion history. Kheris has since become a professional model. Yes, she walks on the runway and is in magazines, and everything! She can also be seen on Disney Channel!

Dani and Dannah Are Two Inspirations Sisters Dani and Dannah Lockett have really made a name for themselves all while professing their faith in God. On their Youtube Channel which has over 250,000 subscribers, these two gorgeous girls share inspirational words to help other people to be positive and to believe in God. They got so popular with people that they started getting calls to do acting. After going on a lot of shows to talk about their lives and what they believe, they are now going to be the stars in a television show. We are sure that we are going to see much more from these two sweeties!

Gabby Is The Barrett Boss Gabrielle “Gabby” Goodwin is a tween sized CEO and a real life Girl Boss! She, along with her mom, are the inventor of a double-sided hair barrette called Gabby Bows. But, guess what? Gabby is actually the president of the company! YES, Girl Power!! Hair barrettes are a huge part of being a little girl. But, they do get lost a lot! With Gabrielle’s invention, Gabby Bows, you won’t keep losing those pretty little bows, and that will save families lots of money. She has learned a lot being her own boss. We are happy that she doesn’t just keep all of that knowledge to herself. Gabby offers workshops to help other girls become bosses too!

The fu ture looks super bright with these ou tstanding girls leading the way! 11
