Inside Your
December Box “These are a few of my favorite things.” 2018 was a great year for the Brown Sugar Box. We started January off fresh with moves of “reclaiming my time” and plans to “wake up, pray, grind, repeat.” February led us to redefining history to tell “HERstory” while in March we embraced our inner and outer beauty. April marked the first anniversary of our Brown Sugar Box giving all of you the chance to be “Queen for the Day.” In May, we paid homage to the round the way girls, pretty young things and tenderonis. We sped through the summer months, but that wasn’t before relaxing, relating, and releasing in June; catching flights and not feelings as official fly girls in July. Of course, you can never be too fly, so we made sure you had all the makings for feeling yourself with the August “Glow Up” Edition. In September we paid respect to our African motherland followed by celebrating the strong, black women that you are with the October SHEro edition. November prepared us for the holidays and feelings of love and comfort, and nothing makes us more comfortable than a homecooked meal. Oprah isn’t the only one who makes a list of her favorite things! This December, we’re sharing a few of our favorite things with you. We wanted to end the year off with another reminder of how

2018 I N R E V I E W
The Year’s Moments by Saeeda Ruffin
is really giving us a bevy of memories. Some good moments, some not-so-great, but 2018 definitely had many moments that may go down in the unforgettable annals of history. This was the year that “once in a blue moon” actually became a reality when there was a total lunar eclipse and we actually had a Super Blue Moon. But, there was so much more that 2018 brought for us to marvel at and, in some cases, give a hearty side-eye to. With each passing year, as we age, we become more likely to pay greater attention to what is actually going on around us. We became more “woke”, if you will. But, we are not just woke about “important” life changing stuff. We became woke about EVERYTHING, from new heel shapes for shoes to new braid techniques and, of course, what people in influential positions are saying and doing. We just end up knowing a whole lot of stuff! So, let’s see if you’ve been keeping up with the happenings of 2018. We want to share what we consider to be a few of the year’s most memorable moments: With her lovely mom, Doria Ragland,
4
representing by her side, with her melanated radiance and beautiful locs, the whole world watched, literally, as Meghan Markle married Prince Harry. Our hearts beat a little faster as we saw one of our “sistas” grab the attention of the masses and show how truly amazing and poised a black woman can be. Meghan was her own woman before Harry, anyway. Meghan’s wedding was “Black Girl Magic” on full display. Plus, they announced that a royal baby is on the way! The excitement of it all continues. Simone Biles, or shall we say, Simone Superstar, became the first woman EVER to win four all-around world titles in gymnastics. She flipped and
Red Table Talk swung her way to this phenomenal feat while nursing kidney stones. Yes, she was actually sick when she won and made history! Goes to show that you are only as weak as you allow your mind to be. Don’t let Simone’s petite frame fool you. She showed 2018 and the gymnastic world who the master is...sho-nuff Simone! Everybody’s “grandmother” and quintessential actress Cicely Tyson FINALLY received an honorary Oscar award. We have been privileged to watch Miss Tyson sear the big screen with character portrayals that we may never forget. She has always had
a delivery that grips the heart and forces people to recognize that she is giving the performance of a lifetime... every time! She should have had that Oscar years ago. But, we are definitely grateful that she has received her accolades while she was still alive to appreciate them. If you are like most, one day, you opened your Facebook feed to see Jada Pinkett-Smith spilling the tea, and you set your alarm to be sure that you heard all of the details. Yes, the Red Table Talk made a bright entry into our lives and we have yet to look back. Jada had been trying to push this project through years ago, but finally found the right platform, Facebook, and the perfect timing to make it happen. Along with her daughter, Willow, and her mother, we have cried ugly tears and laughed until our sides hurt. While some may not want to know “everything” about the inner workings of their lives (Jada can definitely get a bit explicit), it is safe to say that we can appreciate their realness and relatability. They are clearly stars. But, beyond that, they connect because they show us that underneath the exterior, they are simply human...just like all of us.

Classic Tips for Getting into the
A
by Alexandria Daniels
s we get closer to the end of the year, it’s easy to not feel excited about the holidays. People are wrapping things up like finishing projects at work, completing school, and feeling overwhelmed with how much shopping needs to get done before the family arrives for Christmas dinner. Maybe the year didn’t go as well as you hoped and it’s difficult to connect with the holiday cheer within you. Luckily, you can get into the holiday spirit with very little effort. Here are five tips to help you get into the Christmas spirit:
6
Get Out Your Favorite Holiday Tunes
Music always helps lift everyone’s spirits. So why not blast your favorite Christmas music to get into the spirit of the holiday season? Turn the volume up at home or listen to a few songs while you are in the office. Take things up a notch by going caroling with friends to help share the Christmas joy.
Start Decorating Your House
One of the most fun ways to get into the holiday spirit is to decorate your space. Put colorful or white lights around certain places inside your home to brighten up the vibe. Place a wreath on your door or start hanging those cute Santa stockings on the fireplace. It’s also fun to do some lighthearted competition with your neighbors by getting a head start on decorating your house.
Get Started on Gift Shopping We all know Christmas shopping can get crazy as the holiday approaches. If there’s one thing you can do to get into the Christmas spirit, it’s getting a start on that shopping list. The sooner you buy those presents
for your loved ones, the more relaxed you will feel in the end. Also, just being part of the hustle and bustle of trying to buy the must-have item before it runs out of stock is enough to get you excited for the holidays.
Watch Holiday Movies
Watching your favorite holiday films is an easy solution if you are having trouble feeling that Christmas cheer. Holiday movies can be comforting. They usually cover a range of emotions from heartwarming and romantic to sadness and reflective. However, they leave you feeling good at the end, or at least hopeful. Be sure to watch a ton of great black holiday classics from The Best Man to The Last Holiday that will definitely
leave you smiling through the end of the year.
Bake Your Favorite Old (or new!) Holiday Treats
Got a sweet tooth? Then, baking is a terrific way for you to welcome the holidays. Whip up some of your favorite holiday baked goods. Tired of making the same fudge brownies every year? Try out a new recipe. Cooking is also great for bringing people together, especially this time of year, so be sure to share your new delicious treats with family, friends, or co-workers. With this quick list of tips, you will be in the holiday spirit in no time. The year is coming to a close, so let’s end it with the feeling of joy in our hearts and share that joy with others. Happy Holidays!

5 Fashion Trends
to try this Winter by Alexandria Daniels
It’s finally winter! Big coats, heavy fabrics, and dark colors often take over the winter season. This year things are changing up in a big way. There are less dark colors and more pops of pastels. Vintage styles, like western, are making a comeback this year. You’d think some of these new trends would never make the runway but they are making people open their eyes to how eclectic winter fashion can be. Are you ready to spice up your winter wardrobe? Here are 5 fashion trends you need to try this winter:
1
Baby Blues
Pastels are usually a thing during the Spring/ Summer fashion season but they can work during the winter season as well. Baby blue is making its wave this winter season. We’re ditching the dark blues and swapping them with its lighter alternative. How perfect because it works with the chilly vibe.
8
2
Country Western
Quite an unusual trend to see this winter season but it’s a cool blending of nostalgia and femininity. There’s an air of tomboy element to this style that adds a bit of smoldering boldness too. Put on your best cowgirl leather boots, cotton plaid shirt, and blue jeans!
3
Layering
Another trend that is making headlines this season is layering. Who hasn’t layered clothes at least once? However, this trend is fun to play with. Consider mixing a variety of textures and patterns to create one multi-layered unique look. Have you ever thought of mixing suede and leather? You’ll be in for a pleasant surprise!
4
Fringe
Fringe doesn’t have to be just a hairstyle. For this winter season, fringe is a fun style to show off a glamorous, lively side. Winter is usually associated with darkness but fringe brings life. If you are going out, put on your best party dress with some fringe and live it up!
5
Leopard Print
Leopard print is a traditional winter trend that should never end. It makes a woman feel powerful and sexy. It’s an incredibly empowering look to try this winter. Pair some leather pants and long white thermal with a leopard print winter coat. You will easily be the talk of the town. Winter trends are on fire this year! It’s a toss up of eclectic, flair, and glamour. Find which style suits you and don’t be afraid to stand out!

4 Black Holiday Movies
You’ve Never Seen by Alexandria Daniels
There are quite a few popular Black holiday movies we turn to every year. Films like Last Holiday, This Christmas, and The Best Man Holiday are quick to play on our DVD players, but what about those black Christmas films that are overlooked? If you are looking to add more movies for your Christmas marathon, we got you covered. Here are 4 black holiday movies you’ve never seen:
10
1 The Kid Who Loved Christmas (1990)
This 1990 film is special for a couple of reasons. For one, it’s a melodramatic made-for-TV movie fit for the entire family. Second of all, it stars a spectacular cast including Vanessa Williams, Cicely Tyson, Delle Reese, and Sammy Davis Jr. in his final onscreen performance. The movie tells the story of an orphan named Reggie, who’s about to be adopted by a couple until tragedy strikes. After the sudden death of his wife, the husband is left fighting for his right to adopt the young child after he is called unfit to be a parent. The Kid Who Loved Christmas is a heartwarming tale about coming together as a family despite the obstacles.
2 The Preacher’s Wife (1996)
Whitney Houston, Courtney B. Vance, and Denzel Washington star in this Christmas film you need to check out. It tells the story of a preacher whose marriage is falling apart and his church is threatened to be closed down. One night, he prays to God for help. Lo and behold an angel appears to help the preacher but he may be more troublesome than he’s worth. Though a remake of The Bishop’s Wife (1974), fans of the film compare it to It’s A Wonderful Life (1946). If you enjoy any of those classics, The Preacher’s Wife is a feel-good comedy that will bring you more Christmas cheer.
3
4
Santa, Baby! (2001)
Dear Secret Santa (2013)
This is a fun animated film you’ve probably never seen featuring the voices of Eartha Kitt and Patti LaBelle. It’s about a little girl who’s only Christmas wish is to help her dad, a songwriter, come up with a new jingle. After some musical writer’s block, dad suddenly gets a burst of Christmas inspiration. Based on Kitt’s classic holiday hit, Santa, Baby! is a charming and underrated Christmas movie that’s definitely worth checking out.
Fans of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the Lifetime channel rejoice because the last film on our list stars none other than Tatiana Ali in this not so well-known TV film. Ali plays Jennifer, a workaholic who receives anonymous holiday love letters. Who is her secret admirer? Well, she will have to turn to her past to find out whom. Dear Secret Santa is The Lake House (2006) but with a Christmas twist, exploring themes of time travel, loss, and faith. If you’ve never seen this unique holiday tale, you are in for a treat.
All of these low-key Christmas films are definitely worth watching this year. If you’ve never seen them, give them a shot. Hopefully, these films will add a bit more flavor to your holiday movie lineup! 11
Things we are leaving behind in 2018 by SL Rudan
E
ach New Year ushers in a season of renewal, change, and the opportunity to just move forward. Of course, there will be plenty of things that we leave behind in the previous year. Well, 2018 is no different. To put it lightly, 2018 has been a very “interesting” year. It brought with it some things that we would rather not let cross over into our brand new, shiny 2019. Ain’t nobody got time for some of that stuff, for real! So, anything that was just totally off the wall or behavior that caused someone to lose their invitation to “the cookout”, we are going to just leave it right here, in 2018. Here’s a rundown of things (and people) that
12
we are packing away, never to be remembered again...except with serious side-eyeing, “Yeah, Girl” banter. Otherwise, we bid the ridiculousness and all of the things that we are leaving behind in 2018 a hearty “Poof! Be Gone!”, as we take real, grown lady steps into a much more amazing 2019: First up, we have one of the biggest detractors from the black race. You knew exactly who we were talking about before we even said his name. No, we didn’t say it yet, but it’s definitely in your head. Oh, Kanye...dear, dear Kanye. We are going to pray because, Bro, things have got to get better in 2019. So, to help you out, we are leaving all of the “red hats,” slavery talks, and White House
press conferences in 2018. Trust us, Bro, you don’t need those in your life. Y’all are not going to be embarrassing us in 2019 like y’all did in 2018. So, we have to leave anything unbecoming of a strong woman in the past. Actually, we thought that we all agreed, years ago, to keep our hands to ourselves, but, clearly “some celebs” did not get the memo about that. Sisters, we can’t have this stuff going on. If my crown is crooked, just straighten that thing up. But, use encouraging words, love, and tenderness to do that. If an issue comes up, talk it out and squash it. FYI: Tiaras and red carpets should not be getting torn up in the process. So, let’s get together, peacefully. Do it for the kids! They are looking and learning from our behavior. While the remix has definitely gotten a lot of play, we want
to leave “the original” Fergie National Anthem in 2018 where it didn’t actually ever belong. Any patriotic performance that causes grown men to giggle is just not being done right. To help her get it right in the future, we will need someone to please send her the link to Whitney Houston’s version before the 2018 closes out. We can’t have all of that “ner-yerring” in 2019...nope, can’t have it. If we’re going to kneel, might as well make it good.
We want all of you to look great in 2019. So, we are hereby abolishing all makeup trends that do not compliment or enhance your beauty. Adding extra stuff like thicker nose hairs, red eye contacts, and face tats need to be left in 2018. In case you have forgotten, we believe that our black is beautiful and, in all honesty, hiding it under tats just distracts. But, uh, those red eyes...they need to be left on the big screen and brought out only for playing dress up. There was something that we needed to leave behind, but instead, we have decided to just “throw the whole thing out”...coming for our AUNTIE MAXINE! Some folks tried it, they even took it way too far, but in the end, Auntie Maxine came through shining from
the midterm elections! She wouldn’t back down, in her own words, “not one second”! So, for any behavior that led to someone coming for our Auntie, it’s best to leave that behind because she is going into 2019 like the Queen that she is, running things royally! The last thing on our list is any music that cannot be performed without someone who is inebriated translating it for us. Where did “real music” go?? At some point, real music got lost in 2018 and we ended up with its cousin, who can’t sing or rap without mumbling and slurring. We don’t like how we sound trying to imitate slurring and mumbling. It is not really “becoming” of a strong black woman to sound like that. So, to that mumble stuff, we say...Poof! Be gone! Whew, that was easy! Happy 2019!

5 Ways to Give Back
This Holiday Season by Alexandria Daniels While this is the season to buy gifts for our loved ones, it is important to keep in mind those who are in need. Christmas is more than just presents. It’s the time of year to give back and share the joy with those around us, including the everyday people who pass us by. We don’t know everyone’s story but you never know who may need help. Getting into the spirit of charity is a beautiful way to make use of the holiday. Not sure what to give back? Here are five ways you can give back this season:
Help Feed The Homeless
One of the best ways to give back this season is to go down to your local community center or shelter and help feed those who don’t have a home to go to. Normally, there would be volunteering events, like Meals on Wheels for example, where you can help prep lunches for the homeless. Taking a day out of your weekend to focus on feeding the homeless is not only productive but shows your caring spirit.
Donate Your Clothes
Do you feel like you need to make some space in your closet? If so, don’t throw away those old t-shirts from last year. Instead, consider donating them to a Goodwill store or shelter. While you may not need them anymore, someone who is in need of clothes may certainly find them useful.
Give Blood
You never know who may be suffering from a health crisis during the holidays. Giving blood is simple, free, and doesn’t take too long. Look for updates from hospitals or the American Red Cross to see if you can help. Donating blood will help save a life this year.
14
Be A Little Helper To Your Friends, Family, and Neighbors Small acts of kindness go a long way. See if your friendly neighbor needs someone to babysit their toddler while they are out. Send a small holiday check to your parents who raised you right and could use some extra money this year. Go grocery shopping for your grandma! Find little ways to give back to those who you love and respect.
Donate Money to Your Favorite Charity
Are there any causes that mean the world to you? Whether it is giving a small donation to a children’s hospital fund or a political cause, any donation you make to a cause that deeply impacts your heart matters.
These are just five of the numerous, meaningful ways to give back to the world. Have fun with it! As long as your act of service is coming from the heart, you will be benefiting the person you are helping and yourself.
