Stylish Headbands By Girl Tyler

U

p or down. Straight or curly. Braided back or off to the side. No matter the style, you can never have too many hair accessories! Your gorgeous hair is a gift for all to see. Add a little extra pop of color with an original headband designed by you. This activity is a great way to expand your fashion sense while also recycling old t-shirts. All you need to get started is a few t-shirts, permission from an adult, and a pair of scissors!

Time to start cutting! » Lay the t-shirt on a flat surface and cut straight across into horizontal strips. » The strips can be as thick or as thin as you’d like. For thick strips, twist the strip twice as you would a normal ponytail ring. » For a thin headband, cut the fabric into three individual strips and braid them together then connect with a knot. » Experiment with the different colors and twist the fabric into a comfortable fit for the shape of your head. » When you’re done, model your original headband collection for your family and friends!

Worksheet

By Girl Tyler

our thoughts are mighty and the way you choose to express them packs a powerful punch. What you believe about yourself and the world around you eventually becomes reality. Create positive experiences in your life by shifting your thinking. You can do this by creating a list of affirmations. Affirmations are special statements to boost self-confidence. Think of them as a love note to yourself.

4

Here are a few examples: •

I am a strong, intelligent, and beautifully talented student who will excel in the career of my choice.

My opinion matters and I do not need the approval of others.

My dreams are possible and each day I move closer to making them a reality.

I am on my way to becoming a fierce competitive gymnast, nurse, doctor, writer or teacher (or something else).

Write your affirmations in present tense using encouraging words. The bolder the better! Even if you’re writing out future plans, find a way to make them present day. What you say about yourself is just as important as the words you speak to others. Be kind to you! Now write your own! When you’re done, check this worksheet daily and slowly recite the words until you have them memorized. Repeat them during moments of doubt and frustration. Your words have healing powers!

Recipe:

Homemade Bath Bomb

By Girl Tyler

W

inter is almost on its way out the door but there are a few more chilly days in the forecast! You don’t have to wait for spring though. Imagine a warm day at the beach splashing in the water with the sand moving gently between your toes. All you need is a bath bomb to get you ready for the warm, sunny days ahead! Be sure to get permission!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Instructions:

• 1 cup baking soda

1. Pour the baking soda and Epsom salts into a clean bowl. Mix them together evenly using the whisk. 2. Mix the citric acid, water, essential oil, olive oil, and food coloring in the jar. (Get creative with the essential oils! Try out as many scent combinations as you please.) 3. Using a teaspoon, slowly pour the liquid mixture into the dry mix. 4. Pack the mixture tightly into the bath bomb mold (or muffin tin). You can also shape them by hand like snowballs. This step should be done quickly because you don’t want the mixture to dry out! 5. Freeze the bath bomb for at least one hour then allow it to sit for one day until completely dry. 6. Lastly, fill your bathtub with warm water then drop the bath bomb in and enjoy!

• 1/2 cup citric acid • 1/2 cup Epsom salts • 1 tsp. water • 2 tsp. essential oil (any of your choice!) • 3 tsp. olive oil • Food coloring (any color combo will work) • Mixing bowl • Whisk • Jar • Bath bomb mold or a muffin tin

5 Lit Black Girls You Should Know By Jarius Edens

Y

ou’re an amazing Black girl! You are rocking school, chores, and so much more. You’re drinking your water, doing exercises, and dancing on TikTok. You’re crushing goals and keeping your eyes on the big picture. You can’t wait to get your glow up into full effect. You watched Michelle Obama “go high when they went low”, you celebrated when Kamala Harris stood firm in her power as she was “speaking”, and you cried when Oprah accepted her 2018 Golden Globe Award and praised the “women’s names we will never know”. For every successful Black woman there is someone who inspired her. Someone who made her believe she could reach her goals and defy all odds.

Simone Manuel

Manuel is a competitive sprint swimmer, Communications major from Stanford University, and a gold Olympic medalist.

Kimberly Bryant
