Motherland MUSIC

usic is fun! Kids can have a blast doing TikTok dance challenges or even making up their own dances. There’s just something so cool about listening to music and moving to the beat. One reason that you probably really like music is that your ancestors in Africa loved and used music for all kinds of things. They used music for special ceremonies, for communicating when they worked, and of course, for just having a good time with their friends and family. We call Africa “the Motherland” because it is the place where our ancestors came from hundreds of years ago. In the Motherland, music is super important, and everyone participates. Imagine living in a place where everyone sings, dances, and plays music every day. It must be awesome! You can make music every day, too, just like they do in the Motherland. Here are two instruments you can make to bring that Motherland music into your home.

African Pan Flute

African Rain Stick

The African Pan Flute is a handheld instrument that you play with your mouth. In Africa, it is usually made from bamboo or hollow sticks. You can make your own African Pan Flute using plastic straws. To get started, you will need:

Africa is a very hot and dry place. Some Africans believe that they can make it rain by using a Rain Stick to make music. The rain stick is actually supposed to sound like rain pouring down. To make your own rain stick, you will need:

• •

8 long plastic straws A roll of tape (washi tape, duct tape, or clear tape) Scissors

Directions: With an adult’s help, cut the straws into 8 different lengths. Then, place them on a table next to each other, from biggest to smallest. You will know that your straws are right when the ends of the straws are lined up straight across at one end and the other end is in size order. Take a strip of tape and lay it across the group of straws. They should all be stuck together. Flip it over and lay another piece of tape across the other side of the straws. You’re done! Now, blow your African Pan Flute to make an awesome song.

• •

1 cardboard tube (from a roll of paper towels or aluminum foil). You can decorate the tube if you like 2-inch wide strip of aluminum foil, packing tape or duct tape ½ cup of dry beans ½ cup of uncooked rice

Directions: To get started, place a strip of tape across the bottom of one end of the tube. The end should be completely covered with tape so that nothing can fall out of it. Crumple the foil so that it looks like a snake. Then, place the foil inside the tube. Add your beans and rice to the tube. Seal the open end of the tube with tape. That’s it! You’ve made an African Rain Stick! It should sound amazing!

Young King, you did a great job and you’re going to have a fantastic time with your new instruments. Your African ancestors certainly would be proud that you are continuing their traditions and making that Motherland music.

Red, Black, and Green!

What Do They Mean? By Racquel Parker Ever wonder what red, black, and green mean when they’re displayed together? These colors make up the Pan African Flag. Each color is unique and has a special meaning. Marcus Garvey, the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), was very involved in the fight for the liberation of Black people. He proposed a flag be created as a symbol of our pride as a people. In 1920, the Pan African Flag was created. The Pan African Flag is flown all around the world and it is proudly displayed on Juneteenth.

Red

Black

Green

Red is for the blood shed by our ancestors in the fight for liberation and it unifies people of African descent. Civil rights leaders fought for freedom, and many died on that journey. The fight for freedom and liberation wasn’t easy and it’s still going on today. We may have different conditions than our ancestors, but we are still fighting for freedom and against injustice.

Black is for our beautiful melanin filled skin. As people of African descent, we come in every shade you can imagine. It’s a reminder that our Black is beautiful. Representation matters and it’s so important to never forget where you came from. We’re truly our ancestors’ wildest dreams and they’re smiling down on us.

Green is for the fertility and prosperity of Africa. If you’ve ever heard anyone refer to Africa as “The Motherland,” it is because of agriculture and lush plant life found throughout the continent. Africa is home to more plant life than any other continent. According to National Geographic “Savannas, or grasslands, cover almost half of Africa, more than 13 million square kilometers (5 million square miles).”

We proudly wear red, black, and green to symbolize Unity for Black people around the world. Source: https://www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/africa-physical-geography/
