ver wonder about the place most Black Americans call the “Motherland?” It is where our families came from years and years ago. Have you figured out where this special place is yet? If you said, “Africa,” you are right! Check out these wonderful things that are in Africa:
Africa Has Color-Changing Water
There is a body of water in Africa called “The Red Sea.” It can really turn RED! Where you live, the water is usually blue. But, in the Red Sea, there is algae that changes color when it dies. This causes all of the water in the entire Red Sea to go from blue to red.
Africa Has Triangular Buildings With A Statue Guard
Have you ever seen a building shaped like a triangle? Well, on the continent of Africa, in a country called Egypt, you will find triangle-shaped buildings called pyramids. What’s even more fascinating about these buildings is that there is a statue of a mythical creature that is supposed to protect them. It has the body of a lion, the head of a person, and wears a headdress like ancient royalty. Do you know the name of this extraordinary statue? It is called a “Sphinx.” What a cool name!
Africa Has A Real Place Called Madagascar
Believe it or not, there is an island in the southeastern part of Africa called “Madagascar.” It is the place that the movie, “Madagascar,” was named after! Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the entire world. That’s huge! Do you think the animals there do a lot of talking and dancing like the ones in the movie?
Africa Has Volcanoes
It can get super-hot in some places in Africa, especially where they have volcanoes! Yup, Africa is home to more than 100 volcanoes. The volcanoes are located in different mountains all over the continent. The largest volcano in Africa is located in Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s largest mountain. Kilimanjaro means “Shining Mountain” in Swahili, an official language of Africa. What a perfect name for this fantastic African treasure!
Now, you have discovered some of Africa’s most prized treasures! Maybe one day, you will get an opportunity to visit the continent of Africa and learn even more about Black history and African culture.

Red, Black, and Green!
What Do They Mean? By Racquel Parker Ever wonder what red, black, and green mean when they’re displayed together? These colors make up the Pan African Flag. Each color is unique and has a special meaning. Marcus Garvey, the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), was very involved in the fight for the liberation of Black people. He proposed a flag be created as a symbol of our pride as a people. In 1920, the Pan African Flag was created. The Pan African Flag is flown all around the world and it is proudly displayed on Juneteenth.
Red Red is for the blood shed by our ancestors in the fight for liberation and it unifies people of African descent. Civil rights leaders fought for freedom, and many died on that journey. The fight for freedom and liberation wasn’t easy and it’s still going on today. We may have different conditions than our ancestors, but we are still fighting for freedom and against injustice.
Black Black is for our beautiful melanin filled skin. As people of African descent, we come in every shade you can imagine. It’s a reminder that our Black is beautiful. Representation matters and it’s so important to never forget where you came from. We’re truly our ancestors’ wildest dreams and they’re smiling down on us.
Green Green is for the fertility and prosperity of Africa. If you’ve ever heard anyone refer to Africa as “The Motherland,” it is because of agriculture and lush plant life found throughout the continent. Africa is home to more plant life than any other continent. According to National Geographic “Savannas, or grasslands, cover almost half of Africa, more than 13 million square kilometers (5 million square miles).” We proudly wear red, black, and green to symbolize Unity for Black people around the world. Create Your Own Traditional
By Girl Tyler
frican masks are a unique symbol passed down through many generations in sacred ceremonies. Various tribes honor their ancestors, carry out special coming of age rituals, and celebrate weddings through song and dance while wearing masks. African masks are spiritual representations of a region’s cultural beliefs which date back millions of years. There are masks that cover faces while others can cover the head like a helmet, or headdress. Masks hold sacred value and are decorated with meaningful patterns and colors. African masks are preserved in museums around the world and duplicates are sold at local festivals, but the most authentic designs are passed down between generations. Using your imagination, create your own African mask.
Here’s what you’ll need: •
Paper plate
•
Newspapers
•
Construction or crepe paper
•
Pencil
•
Acrylic or poster paint
•
Paint brushes
•
Scissors
•
White glue
10
Instructions: Place the plate face down and draw two ovals to represent the eyes. With an adult’s help, use your scissors to cut out the eye holes. Cut a few strips of the newspaper. Twist them to form a nose and mouth then glue them onto the plate. Allow at least 5 minutes to dry before moving on to the next step. Paint the plate with a base color. Most traditional masks are white, brown, or black, but you’re the leader of this tribe! Use your favorite color. Allow the paint to dry for 30 minutes before moving on to the next step. Using white paint, decorate your mask with creative patterns and dots. For the final step, cut out various strips (they do not need to be equal in length) from the construction paper (feathers also work). Glue them around the rim of the plate to resemble hair.
