why solo travel is

Necessary for mental health

Have you ever felt as though life was getting too loud? Constant demands. Incessant notifications. Neverending meetings. The list goes on and on. Escape from daily demands and fall into a safe space governed by you. Solo travel is the prime time to sit with yourself. Traveling with others requires a bit of flexibility while being alone gives you the freedom to move at your own pace. I’m writing this from my hotel in Vermont. I’m a first-timer here, and the atmosphere is minimalist in comparison to what I’m used to. I’ve already learned a few new things about myself in three short days. I love it here. This is my second solo trip, and I look forward to the next one.

Making the decision to travel alone for the first time may feel counterintuitive at first. You’ll shake that feeling off soon and very soon, especially as the anticipation builds. The destination doesn’t matter or how you choose to get there. The journey is about growth, peace, and restoration. Establishing trust within is critical on the

path to self-discovery. The only voice that matters is yours. You’ll quickly establish what you like and don’t like and test the waters to refine your current taste. There are moments that should be experienced with others and moments that require solitude. Solo travel gives you the opportunity to choose. You’ll feel both refreshed and invigorated to face your fears. This special time in your life creates confidence that you won’t find anywhere else. You deserve a breath of fresh air in an environment of your choosing.

Solo travel creates a space to reset. You have the ability to think out loud with no distractions. Yes, you still have a life back at home and at work that will crave your attention no matter your location, but that doesn’t matter when you’re focused on navigating new terrain, internally and externally. Pick a destination that introduces you to new cultures, fresh perspectives, and a way of life that you aren’t accustomed to. Your worldview will feel sharper when you return home. Nothing will feel the same

4

because you aren’t the same, and that’s a good thing.

You have one life to live. Live it to the fullest. These days aren’t coming back.

*Safety is a priority, so you shouldn’t disappear to an undisclosed location without alerting your family and friends. Share your travel itinerary with your inner circle before your departure. Someone should know

where you’re staying in case of an emergency. Even though you’re a big girl and I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-EN-T, be vigilant.

3 qualities to Seek Out In A travel partner

There comes a time in life when you acknowledge that you simply cannot travel with everyone. Yes, you may be the best of friends, but your survival instincts are different. Although the two of you may have a fantastic working relationship, you’ve never seen them actually problem-solve outside of work. Even though you and your new flame get along great first thing in the morning, you won’t know the strength of your relationship until you’ve roughed it together for several days after a travel mishap. The best case scenario is the one where you’re realistic about your travel expectations and accept that even the people closest to you may not value the same accommodations as you. Here are three major qualities you should seek out in a suitable travel partner.

Patience

To have a little patience, it takes A LOT of strength. Mishaps happen. Canceled or delayed flights. Flat tires. Lost or stolen luggage. Anything that could go wrong can go wrong. You need a travel companion who is grounded and flexible to roll with the punches, no matter what comes. Anxious personalities, people with short fuses, or a pessimistic attitude tend to make matters worse. Patience is a virtue when you’re on the go. Traveling with others is all about flexibility and compromise.

Budget Alignment

You prefer economy seats, but they are accustomed to first class. You’d rather rent a car, but they think a ride share will cost less. You like vacation rentals, but they see value in booking a hotel. You want a fancy dinner, but they’re cool with eating fast food every night. Your idea of luxury travel isn’t the same as the next person, and that’s okay. Manage money expectations at the beginning. Be transparent about budgetary constraints.

Problem-Solving Skills

There are some factors that are simply out of your control when traveling. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. How do you pivot? A person’s inability to navigate sticky situations while traveling is a recipe for disaster. If this person has left a bad taste in your mouth regarding their handling of situations in your everyday life, you can rest assured that they'll work your last nerve at a time that is supposed to be for rest and relaxation.

Communication is key! The same applies to you as to others. A pleasant travel experience works both ways.

SUMMER TRAVEL HACKS with kids

8

Family vacation season is back. Traveling with little ones is tricky yet worth the extra work because the sweet memories last a lifetime. Planning ahead and having backups for unexpected travel interruptions are key. If you’re a new parent, this one is for you. (You can find value in this article if you’re a seasoned parent with war stories ready to get back out there.)

KEEP THE SNACKS ON DECK

Pack veggies and fruits that won’t cause a mess. Keep the sugary snacks at a minimum because the kids will bounce off the walls and onto your last nerve.

PACK EXTRA CHARGERS

Avoid a serious meltdown and keep spare chargers for tech devices.

PLAN FOR A MESS

Wet wipes and sanitizer will be your best friends.

AVOID A RIGOROUS SCHEDULE

Kids will hold you to every detail of your vacation plans. Disappointment can be avoided by giving them a highlight reel before you leave home instead of a minute-by-minute schedule.

DON’T FORGET THE NIGHT LIGHT

Sleeping in a new place can be scary. Pack this lifesaver to prevent restless nights.

KEEP THE ESSENTIALS NEARBY

If you’re checking bags, keep extras in your carryons like diapers, medi-

cine, and clothes.

TRAVEL WITH A FIRST AID KIT

Accidents happen, prepare accordingly.

BRING ALONG EXTRA SUPPORT

Burnout is real, and traveling with or without kids is exhausting. Invite a childless friend, the in-laws, or your parents to babysit while you catch up on rest in between activities.

TSA PRECHECK IS WORTH THE INVESTMENT

Long lines are annoying for big kids and little kids. Spend the extra funds to breeze through security during a busy travel season.

MAKE A DIY BUSY BOX

Keeping kids occupied is the most challenging part of traveling. Limit screen time by packing a carry-on friendly box to occupy their time. Fill it with coloring books and crayons, small toys, imaginative games, and activities that match their interests and age level.
