Everyone’s just sitting around keke-ing while your stomach is talking to you. While we can’t help you with all that, we can make sure you arrive at the next cookout prepared! This month’s edition is ideal for the perfect BBQ. We all know the most important thing at the cookout is the food. 25th Anniversary Essence Music Festival
One of the must go-to summer events is the upcoming Essence Music Festival. The legendary festival is back this year but this summer’s lineup is more diverse than usual. When it comes to celebrating black culture, Afropunk is at the forefront. No matter how hot it gets in Brooklyn, NY during the summer, Afropunk is one of those festivals that every black person should check out. When you think about summer, what comes to mind? For me, it’s the blazing sun, good concerts, and new fashion trends! That’s right! Time to let go of those spring fever clothes and make way for some of the cutest summer trends to invade your wardrobe. This year these trends are too cute, chic, and vibrant to ignore. Here are 5 of the biggest 2019 summer trends you will absolutely love:
2 White Blouses
Summer clothes don’t necessarily have to be all bold colors. White goes with everything and will always make you shine. Find your new staple white blouse and rock it out.

Maxi Dresses
One major trend that you will be seeing a lot this summer is the maxi dress. These lovely dresses are highly feminine but have an ethereal appeal to them. You can wear some with sleeves, spaghetti straps, and slits. They come in various colors and chic patterns. Wear one of these, and you will be looking like a summer muse.
80s Mini Dress

Why Everyone Can't Come to the Cookout by Saeeda Ruffin
W
ith the summer holidays approaching, you all know what season it is...COOKOUT SEASON! Most have their mouths and stomachs ready for all of the ribs, burgers, “real” potato salad, and corn on the cob that they plan to devour. Between May and September,

there will be countless cookouts to attend. But, while everyone gets amped about the event, not everyone should be invited to the cookout. You all know what we mean. Everybody is not good company, or what some will deem “worthy” to hang out with the many awesome people in your life. There are some personality profiles that just won’t cut it when it comes to getting the coveted cookout invite. Nah. You won’t want them there... trust us. They are the people who won’t bring more than just a case of soda. They usually mess up the vibe of what should be a fun and relaxing day.
The Homewrecker
Some people thrive on attention. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Then, there are people who thrive on getting attention from a very specific group, married men and women. Everybody knows someone like this. This maybe the girlfriend who stays pushing up on other people’s husbands or the dude who tries to play to the cougars. Either way, the homewrecker can quickly cause issues and ruin the fun of your cookout. Forgo that invite for someone who has their hormones in check.
The After-Party Platter Maker
We all know that there may be food left over after the event. You might slide an aluminum platter (or two) into your car to prepare for leftovers. What you need to do is leave those aluminum platters at home, but no one said anything about paper plates! As a host, if you are not careful, you may accidentally invite someone who will use the food from your cookout to supplement their family’s grocery list for the week. Yes, sharing is caring, and it is better to give than to receive. But, y’all, let’s be real about this. It’s better that you don’t assume that you get first claim to the leftovers. Leave the aluminum platter, but load up that paper plate!
The Super Hotepian
If you’re not ready for someone to bring a cache of black soap and oil to your soiree, then, this may not be the best person to invite to your cookout. We love black intellectuals and we love anyone who is an ally for the black community. Who we could live without, at least at the cookout, is that person who thinks that they should repeat the same “stats” about the state of the black community as a whole. You know that person who gets that one pro-black fact and tells it to everyone like 50 times, along with why we shouldn’t eat pork, watermelon, and ice.
The Kids Who Don’t Like To Listen
We know it doesn’t sound nice, but you may have to exclude some of your people’s kids. You know the ones we are talking about. The ones who don’t like to listen and who will, inevitably, get punished before the 2 hour mark. If you can’t handle the tears and the fussing, it may be best not to invite that crew for this event.
Remember, if you invite a bunch of the “wrong” guests, they will always show up and show out! Of course, nobody wants that. So, choose wisely and be realistic about your guest list. You can’t have everyone come to the cookout.

ool and the Gang sang it best, “Celebrate good times! Come on!” If you are black, you likely have never been to a Blackyard BBQ without hearing this song. That’s exactly what a Blackyard bbq is supposed to be...a celebration that unites family and friends while eating and drinking until hearts are content. Actually, we have several “traditions” that are almost strictly for black people’s barbecues. These activities ensure that the cookout has everything that it’s supposed to have going on. You know that every backyard BBQ needs a little bit of drama, a tad bit of table slamming, and of course, a fun “workout.” These family events are important and they help to create memories that we will never forget. Of course, that will include

the most embarrassing moments that we WANT to forget, but that the rest of the family will never let you live down! But, hey, isn’t that it’s all about... families connecting... and that’s what makes backyard barbecues so priceless. So, if you are planning to have a cookout, you will definitely have to include these staple activities. Because, it ain’t a Blackyard BBQ without them! Here is our rundown of the ultimate faves:
Spades
Spades is not a game for the faint at heart. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you will be called out...very LOUDLY. There’s so much more to Spades than meets the eye. Spades will morph from a nice, little family “card game” into an all-out war of wits! Sit down to play and you better be ready to
go. Otherwise, you might be forced out of the game, and an “embarrassing memory” has now been created, featuring you! Do your best not to play yourself.
Double Dutch
Jumping rope is about more than cutesy songs. It’s a testament to the hours of rigorous training that the women of the family put into learning how not to be “double handed” and to get through the entire “Big Mac” jumping song without messing up. Those women will know what it took to ace double dutch and they will put those skills on display at the Blackyard BBQ. Yes, the little girls will likely be the ones to pull out the rope, but, trust us, it will be the women who take over the whole deal. But, be warned, if you are even slightly “double
handed,” they will take the rope right out of your hands, or if you only get to “Filet O’ Fish” during your jump before you break the rhythm. Yes, you will have created another “embarrassing memory” and the family will laugh at you...especially after your boy cousins, who had sisters, get their turns, and show you up. It will happen. It always does!
Dominoes
OK, we mentioned table-slamming. Well, that can happen in one of two scenarios. You and your Spades partner have done your thing or you have to show the crew that YOU ARE the Dominoes King or Queen. It’s nothing personal and it’s not a show of anger. In fact, most people in attendance won’t even flinch. They
expect that sound and, they will likely laugh or instigate feverishly when it happens. The Dominoes table slam is a part of the game! Somebody HAS to do it at some point in the game.
Some “Slide” or “Shuffle” Related Dance Routine
When it comes to a Blackyard BBQ, everybody in the place, including the babies, will know how to do some form of line dance. It’s an absolute and nobody wants to miss that part of the festivities. Now, this is definitive. When the “Electric Slide,” “Cupid Shuffle,” or even Frankie Beverly
and Maze’s “Before I Let Go” comes on, people will STOP whatever they were doing to join in on the dance routine. If they are just arriving, they will hurry up and put those rolls that they brought down, and get to stepping. If they are leaving, they will backtrack and get that last dance in. However, if you don’t know any of the routines... you will be skewered! Do your best not to get up there bumping into the Aunties or the old Uncles, who LIVE for these dance moments. This will not go over well and, unfortunately, if you are too offbeat...you will likely not be invited to the next Blackyard BBQ. So, practice your moves before you jump in and get ready to have the time of your life!

Izzy & Liv is taking over Essence Fest! For three days (July 5 - July 7), we’re bringing you the ultimate pop up shop experience. With culture, confidence, and soul all on the menu, you don’t want to have FOMO when it comes to this! Here’s a taste of some of what’s going on at our Pop-Up.
Day two is all about bringing your confidence to life! Whether you think you’re “flawless” or you’re feelin’ yourself, this is the day to show up and show out! So you will be billed for the January box on the 25th of December; for the Februry box on the 25th of January and so on...
