ummer is gonna do what it do...be sunny and hot! Yes, you are a fabulous melanated young woman who gets even more fabulous when your skin gets a bit sunkissed. But, that doesn’t mean that you don’t have to protect it from getting too much sun. This summer, don’t get caught out there baking in the sun and letting it wreak havoc on your beautiful melanated skin. While the melanin in your skin does provide a little bit of protection from the sun’s UV rays, it is not the only way to offset those harmful UV rays. There are many other ways for you to keep your skin from getting damaged due to that sunshine without causing you to lose your fun in the sun!

Here’s how you can enjoy the sun while staying protected:
Slather That Sunscreen
Uh, Young Sis...you didn’t think that Black people didn’t need to wear sunscreen did you? People are often confused about that. To be honest, ALL PEOPLE need to wear sunscreen. Whether your skin is as radiantly dark as the night or if your skin is super fair, you should wear sunscreen. The higher the SPF, the better! Sunscreen provides a layer of protection between your magically melanated skin and the UV rays that can cause ugly things like skin cancer. So, put it on whenever you go outside, even when you go swimming in your Izzy and Liv swimsuit! Also, just so you know, sunscreen should be worn all year long, not just in summer. Yup.
Keep Yourself Covered
If you want to be mad cute this summer, pull out those fabulous summer hats! Hats are one of the most useful clothing items for keeping UV rays out of your face. his school year hit a little different, right? From online school to quarantines, things were kind of all over the place this year. But, Sis, thankfully, that’s over. School’s out, and it’s time for you to relax, reflect, regroup, and engage in some super fun recreation! Yup, no doubt about it, summertime has come! That being said, you get about 10-12 weeks of summer to just do you! So, what’s up?! What do you plan to have poppin’? You definitely want to make the most out of the time that you have off from school. It’s your time, so get every bit of awesomeness out of it. Here are 4 ideas for taking summer to the max:

GET NEW WITH IT Summer is the perfect time to try new things and go to new places. That restaurant that just came to your town or city, or that new trampoline spot, museum, or whatever... go try them out and enjoy! Squad up and take plenty of photos and videos while you are there. It could even be fun to vlog each new adventure so that you can have something to look back on after summer is over.
GET COLLEGIATE It’s never too soon for a college visit. Going on college visits will help you to get a better understanding about how things look and operate on a college campus. You might want to start with colleges and universities that are closest to home. Then, branch off to those that require more travel. Some colleges will even allow you to eat on their campus and almost all of them offer free tours, by request. You don’t have to be a junior or senior in high school to do this. Even freshmen can explore college campuses.
GET MONEY Most teenagers are planning to go to college or trade school. Well, do you know what you are going to need more than anything? Money! Summer is a fantastic time to really get a jump on those scholarship searches. To get started, simply Google “scholarships”, search organizations that you know offer scholarships such as sororities and fraternities, or you can go on Instagram and search #scholarships. There will be more scholarships than you ever imagined even existed! Take your time and look through them. But, remember, NEVER give your personal information out or PAY MONEY FOR a scholarship site. All of the scholarship info that you need should be 100% free. If you are unsure if the site is safe, ask an adult or current college student for assistance. Then, COMPLETE the scholarships so you can be in the running to GET your college bag.
GET GRATEFUL You survived a whole pandemic school year. Take a moment to reflect on the challenges of this past year, and look at how you were able to overcome them. You DID THAT! Think back on the lessons that you learned this year and how they may have affected your life, for better or for worse. It’s alright to recognize the tough situations. But, when you do, you should also be extremely grateful for the good that you experienced, too. That’s life’s balance and reflecting on them will help you to grow. Now, that’s a summertime well spent!
