Layer Up

Slip dresses were a huge deal this summer. No need to push them into the back of your closet, never to be seen until next year. Layer them up with a blazer, cardigan, sweater, or leather jacket. Pair them with booties and sneakers.

Pleated Skirts

Ease into fall with the versatility of a pleated skirt. Dress them up or down with oversized blouses, hoodies, a leather jacket, fall coats, turtleneck sweaters, graphic tees, wool sweaters (tucked in or out), a blazer...the possibilities are endless!

Biker Shorts

Don’t discount the power of biker shorts in autumn months. The weather is pretty wild so make the two seasons collide. One minute you’re cold then the next you’re burning up. Go summer from the waist down and autumn up top. Dress up biker shorts with an oversized blazer. Channel your inner Princess Diana and reach for her iconic go-to look: a sweatshirt, biker shorts, tube socks, and a sleek pair of sneakers. Black biker shorts are always classy. Switch up your bottoms with brown or gray. Go animalistic and grab a leopard print.

Lavender Hues

Pastels are always reserved for springtime, which usually rolls over into summer, while deeper hues dominate fall months. Burgundy and brown own autumn months but the fashion streets are saying lavender is in the mix. Purple shades are classy and sleek. Mix and match them with grays and black. Jazz them up with silver accessories.

Puff Sleeves

Puff-Sleeve pieces have become wildly popular in recent years and 2021 is no different. Expect to see summertime puff-sleeve dresses, tops, and jumpsuits this fall. The key to transition them over into fall is to compliment them with trendy accessories! Throw on a scarf. Wrap it up in a statement belt. Strut your stuff in mid-calf boots.

How to Deal with

Friend Breakups By Girl Tyler

N

o one ever thinks of their friendships in the past tense. You’re always picturing the amazing journey ahead of you and planning out every detail with the people who will be along for the ride. Never in a million years would you believe that your day one’s wouldn’t make it to the final destination by your side. Unfortunately, life has a not-so-funny way of shaking up our foundation when it comes to failed friendships. Friendship breakups can hurt worse than splitting from a romantic relationship. The person who knows everything about you, dirty laundry included, has become an invisible figure. You can’t help but mourn them, even though they’re only one message away. So how did you two get here? People change as do their interests, goals, and friend circles. When a person chooses to walk away from you, be confident in knowing that you were perfectly whole as you are, but the other person just wanted something different. It is okay to want something different. If you’re someone who has a pattern of falling out with friends or acting as the epicenter of messy social

6

situations – acknowledge your responsibility. Disagreements among friends will happen. How they’re settled reveals how the other person feels about you. Someone who genuinely cares about you would never belittle you or speak negatively behind your back. Never stick around in a friendship that makes you feel bad about who you are or forces you to compromise your morals. Toxic friendships will never sustain you. Know the difference between a friend and a frenemy. Cut those ties ASAP. Friendships end for a variety of reasons: petty differences, betrayal, interference from negative influences, jealousy, misunderstandings, and the list goes on. You’ll lose friends when you’re younger and as you grow older. The good news is, you’ll bounce back. Learning how to

deal with it now will soften the blow in the future. There are times when friendships need a breather. Just because the two of you had a falling out now, it doesn’t mean you won’t return to each other later in life when you’re more mature or at different stages. The beautiful part is that you’ll reconnect with new attitudes and fresh perspectives on what went wrong the first go-round. What’s meant to be will always find its way. Do some self-reflecting. What could you have done differently? Is this friendship worth saving? Don’t point fingers and play the blame game. Journal about it. Seek advice from your parents, a school counselor, or a mentor. They’ll be able to provide an unbiased opinion on how to best

salvage the friendship, assuming there is a window of opportunity to do so. Most importantly: heal first before trying to repair the friendship. You’ll never be a good friend to others if you’re not good to yourself. Fostering negative emotions toward ex-besties will leave you feeling rotten to your core. Move forward with a clear head and a clear heart. The people who you have loved since you spoke your first words or that you met during your first day of school, may or may not stick around for your life’s journey. There’s no crystal ball to predict the future of your friendships. The only thing you can control is how you respond, so choose to learn and be a better person. Focus on the people who are still in your life and work toward strengthening those bonds. Your true tribe is unbreakable.

We’re Totally Obsessed with These

all makeup is as sweet as pumpkin pie. The fall aesthetic is simple, yet bold. You can pull your face card without having to overdo it with a heavy application. Think soft and subtle this season. Tap into the minimalist within to complement your chic fall wardrobe. Natural glam is a standout this season. Our favorite YouTubers and Instagirls have endless tutorials showcasing their autumn-approved makeup trends. Here are a few we’re loving.

GLOSSY LIPS

Nude, lined lips are all the way in! Reach for a lip liner and gloss combo to compliment your natural lip pigment. So what if your lips are hidden behind a mask? You like to wear a glossy finish just because! Pucker up to this classic 2000s era trend.

SKINNY EYEBROWS

This one is arguable! Some girls put their heart and soul into perfecting the fullness of their lashes. If you check the latest red-carpet trends, more celebs are opting for a more natural and subtle arch. Skinny eyebrows were a major thing in the ‘90s. We can’t say that anyone will go back to the thinly plucked style from back in the day; however, the thick dramatic look has a little competition.

ROSE GOLD LIDS

Hello pretty in pink-ish! Rose gold compliments your beautiful skin color like no other. This glamorous warm fall tone is perfect for a link up with the girls or a fun day out with the fam.

UNDER EYESHADOW

Skip the eyeliner and go for a lower lid shadow. There’s an art to it though! Simplicity is key. Put a thin strip of dark shadow under your eye for a smokey effect. The bottom lid shouldn’t overshadow (literally and figuratively) the eyeshadow on your top lid. Don’t overdo it or you will wind up with raccoon eyes!

THE BRONZE BOMBSHELL

You were made with a natural glow, Sis. Black girls have been winning from the beginning! Bronze shadows and highlighters are having a major moment, and both accentuate your natural glow.

Halloween Costume Ideas By Girl Tyler

T

rick or treat! Halloween will be here before you know it. No need to fret about what costume to choose. Look around. You have plenty of spooky inspiration. 2021 is literally one big meme! Every time you turn on the news or look to social media something bizarre has happened...again. Take the good and not so good and laugh out loud this Halloween. Here are a few costume ideas on every end of the spectrum to give you a head start on October 31st.

1. Simone Biles Find a glittery (or solid) leotard and wear a red tracksuit on top. Pull your hair up in a bun with a ribbon. Find a picture of a goat and put it on your back. Then boom you are the Greatest of All Time, Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles! 2. Vice President Kamala Harris Get the historic vice-presidential look: a solid pant suit, Converse sneakers, pearl earrings with a matching necklace — then put a few curls in your hair. 3. Bernie Sanders at the presidential inauguration Put on a blue mask, brown jacket and black pants. Here’s the key to this look: you must have brown and white knit mittens! The mittens seal the deal. Boom! You’re a Bernie Sanders inauguration meme in the flesh! You’ll totally win Halloween if you carry around a folding chair. 4. Moesha Brandy aka Moesha Mitchell from the iconic ‘90s sitcom is a Black girl style icon. Are you currently rocking box braids? If so, you’re halfway there. Throw on a pair of platforms, printed pants, and a baby doll tee. Watch a few old episodes to recreate the perfect ‘90s look. You probably have a few of the items!

10

5. Grab your bestie and tap into Euphoria as Jules and Rue. 6. Gorilla Glue Girl This one had social media on lock for several days! Do a side part in your hair then slick it down with gel (not glue!) and pull it back into a braided pony. Set off the look with bold lashes and place a jewel on top of your lip. Don’t forget the most important accessory: Gorilla Glue (please do not put this in your hair...I repeat...DO NOT PUT GORILLA GLUE IN YOUR HAIR.) Meme of the year. 7. Recreate spicy looks with your sister from Chloe x Halle’s Instagram. 8. Instagram Filter Go to your IG stories and choose your favorite filter. Hold your phone up to a white wall and snap a photo. Save it to your phone then send the photo to a print shop or office supplies store. Ask them to print it onto a thick board. Cut a circle out in the middle and show your face! You’re a live IG story. 9. Smarty Pants How many times have you heard, “You’re too smart for your own good?”. Make it happen. Find your favorite jeans and tape Smarties Candy all over. Voila! You’re officially a smarty pants.

THICK GOT THIS:

Fall Sweater Styles By Saeeda Ruffin

Y

o, where did the warm weather go? Just like the summer, it has gone away and has been replaced with the crisp winds of autumn. So, you know what that means...it’s sweater season! Yessss! It’s time to get with those cute and super warm sweaters that will have you looking fresh and ready for these cool fall months. This year, when it comes to sweater styles for fall, thick got this! In fact, the thicker, the better, and you are going to be so excited about the different ways you can style them to make sure they are giving all you want them to give! Here are a few style ideas to get you started:

SLEEVELESS SWEATERS Not exactly a vest and not exactly a full sweater, the sleeveless sweater is the cute chunky look you will fall in love with this season. Pair the sweater with a blouse or even a turtleneck, or wear it with your arms out. These funky sweaters definitely have a retro look and feel. If you want to go all-in with the vintage-Flava, be sure to wear the sleeveless sweater with some larger-thanlife sunglasses. Oh, you will get plenty of looks, for sure! TIE DYE CARDIGAN Contrary to popular belief, tie-dye is not only worn during the summer. You can wear tie-dye during any season. This fall, break out your tie-dye gear. Not just the regular shmegular tee-shirts and hats, you can flex with your sweaters too! The tie dye sweater cardigan is a must-have item of the fall season. With its fun and colorful design, you’re going to look super cute. The best thing about this sweater style — if you can’t find one you like, you can make it yourself! When you wear this timeless design, you are going to look amazing. Give it a try! CHUNKY AND COLOR BLOCK Plush, fluffy color block style sweaters are going to be the go-to sweater style for this season. The color block adds a bit of whimsy and sassiness to what would normally be a plain sweater. Couple this bold sweater style with your Izzy & Liv She’s So Animated Crossbody Camera Bag for your daily dose of fashion flair. These sweaters can be dressed up with a flirty skirt and boots or worn casually with your favorite joggers. You decide how far you want to take this look!

All the Flava By Saeeda Ruffin

F

all is arguably the “coolest” season. Besides the crisp autumn weather, fall always delivers really awesome events and good eats. In fact, some of the most amazing treats are considered fall favorites for the masses. Yes, fall definitely brings all kinds of Flava! Another perk of the season is the beautiful fall colors. The colors as the leaves change before floating from the trees, along with the everchanging skyline make each fall day feel like you are living and walking through a work of art. Can we give it up for, those fall foods, though! Yeah, your taste buds can’t help but crave the flavors of the season, especially while you’re enjoying the phenomenal colors. Here are some of the flavors you can expect during this cool fall season:

12

Can you say, “Candy Apples”? Girl, yes! Most people love themselves some candy apples during autumn. The classic way to eat candy apples is to serve them on a stick with either a red, candy coating or with caramel and/or nuts. But, that’s not the only way to eat them. Like, what if you don’t want to eat them on a stick? A super-easy way to make them is to cut an apple into slices, dip the slices into a coating that you like (could be melted chocolate, caramel, or both), and let it cool. Not only can these be cute (you can decorate them with nuts, M&Ms, and sprinkles), but they are also tastier when they are bite-sized slices.

Pumpkin Spice Just Feels Right

That Popcorn Be Poppin’ If you don’t know about how amazing that popcorn can be, then, you better ask somebody! Popcorn is a definite all favorite. Corn is such a fall staple that it’s even used for decorating. But, it’s the popcorn for us. Whether you like it plain with butter, slightly sweet and kettle cooked like you find at the fair, or drizzled with chocolate, caramel, and everything else that makes it mad delish, it’s hard to resist this fun to eat treat.

It’s almost as if fall doesn’t officially start if the Pumpkin Spice hasn’t begun to show up in all the stores. Ever since they started adding Pumpkin Spice to just about EVERYTHING, it has become a major part of the flavors of fall. It’s usually the first syrup to sell out at Starbucks and anything that has Pumpkin Spice in it will be the first to get eaten at your fall events. Years ago, pumpkin was not really “that” popular among younger Black people. But, today, things have absolutely changed, and Pumpkin Spice is the REAL MVP of the fall season!

Fall will have you all mesmerized and excited at the same time. Don’t believe us? Go get you some of that fall Flava.

ong live the princess of R&B. Aaliyah Haughton’s life was cut tragically short at the age of 22. Her legacy and influence will forever transcend time. It’s impossible to describe the feeling of hearing her music for the first time and watching her live performances. Her dance moves and music videos were ahead of their time. Many of your favorite artists today mimic Aaliyah’s revolutionary, carefree Black girl style. The sunglasses, side part, and bare midsection were her signature and are still a staple today. In honor of her music being released 20 years after her untimely death, the All-Out Aaliyah playlist is a collection of her greatest hits. Get to know her music and celebrate it with your mom, your aunties, cousins, and even your granny. Everybody and their mama rocked with Aaliyah back in the day because she was just that special. Although she is no longer with us, Aaliyah’s career is a master class in following your own muse. She is forever a positive, motivating force within our lives.
