When we pick up our teacups, is it possible that the process of opening a tea set is like visiting a building? My architecture journey started designing a tea set related to the architecture, aiming to break and redefine the border between construction design and industrial design. Te-architecture (2016 Autumn-2017 Spring semester) is signified as a vital project for me to develop an initial approach towards architecture design. At the beginning of my undergraduate, I applied this technique in a small space design to see construction from a new angle. The tea set was adopted as the function, and the construction design method and the idea and cultural symbol of garden space were exerted. Furthermore, this first interdisciplinary design attempt later informed me about breaking through the traditional architectural field's boundaries, grasping the basics of designing small-scale spaces while focusing on designing highly-demanding architectural space structures. How could the traditional timber structure be inherited and articulated in a contemporary way? Moreover, how should we express its inner essence through architectural means when facing various social problems? There might be two ways towards architecture: one is exemplary actions, the other is the counter-design. (the Environmental Trigger 1975 Bernard Tschumi) Both ways could be kept simultaneously when approaching a design project. As Peter Eisenman concluded in Ten Canonical Buildings, critical and theoretical arguments are essential for all the canonical buildings in architectural history, and they are inseparable. Therefore, I try to find the best way to express ourselves through inheritance and criticism to improve our design ideas, even our world. When I experience internship, I gradually started to focus on how to solve the many social severe events through architecture for inspiring others, even contributing to society. Therefore, On the Way of Gentrification (2020 Spring) and Refrigerators, Lift, Big brothers (2020 summer) aim to find out the root reason for the contradiction in gender and socioeconomic status--- consumerism and capitalization operate their power to control all things. Therefore, we need to think critically about some events that happened in daily life, to avoid us being Blindly manipulated by these forces, even use these imperatives to make a difference.

01 Refridgerator, Lift, Big Brother How consumerism alienates feminism

Project Type: Studio Work Group Work Collaborator: Yaxuan Ge Yutong Guo Contribution: Model 75% Rendering 90% Analysis 30% Instructor: Uriah Yan

" My Body My Rules" is one of the means of Consumerism to attract the customer for consuming

A phenomenon about feminist activities when people throw bras from high-rise buildings. At first glance, it was an act showing support for feminism, but actually it was a bra-factory owner who wanted to boost sales, which triggered me to think about how capitalism utilizes and alienates feminism. Through this incident, it can be inferred that under the surface of an article that attracts women, it may be the utilization of women by consumerism. Therefore, when we try to sort out the relationship between consumerism and feminism, we find three prototypes that three spaces that alienate females are in the center of concern: the kitchen, the factory, and plastic surgery clinics. We find that the movement of feminism is under the control of these spaces. How can we really realize feminism in the true sense? what is the end of feminism-----cyborg?

Above the ground, "ignore the elephant in the room: veiled the inverted action underground (trails delivering the gifts to the women) 27

The woman fled the kitchen. Women hate men and look at things in their eyes. Women hate breasts. Women are taught to wear brassieres against the sexual value of women's eyes. Women unite and decide to resist this kind of vision and call on women to become strong. What is power? They don't know. But we must liberate ourselves from the heart and get rid of this kind of vision. They call on them to throw away their eyes, Finally, they threw away their bras on the parade street. Is that the way to get rid of your eyes? No, the chest is still there. Women are still tired of being pursued by the eyes. The woman came to the hospital and replaced her chest with a soft machine,It's soft, and the women are very satisfied. Does the body without organs throw away its eyes? Looking at women coldly Every woman covers her breasts,The inner shell of the machine is warm and soft,It's even bigger than her original breasts. The eyes on her grew colder 28

02 Co-Construction Library Regeneration and renewal of rural wooden structures

Project Type: Academic Work Individual Work Instructor: Li Huang Site: Zhuantang in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province in China The design and construction of structural units and organizational system are discussed from the point of material and construction for the design and construction of linear wooden structure. Environment nearby could give people enough space for walking and enjoy beautiful landscape

Through the extraction, evolution, alienation of structural units and the expansion of organizational system, this project aims to advocate a concept that the material and structure of construction should be determined at the beginning of design, rather than the concept or shape of architecture. From bottom-up angle, we need use the design to help the people and solve the problem.

03 Bending & Interlocking Reduced Waste Design

Project Type: Studio Work Group Work Collaborator: Zihan Huang Instructor: Masoud Akbarzadeh Site: Santiago de chile in Chile

Folding view

Our interpretation starts with origami and, through GLD Architecture's learning, rethinks wood as a material with a certain toughness and strength. We take advantage of folding wood to maximize wood use and minimize waste. Then, the study of interlocking system of Inca civilization was introduced to realize Assemble architecture by combining interlocking and folding structure. Overall, the project focuses on the study of material properties and the best use of PRECEDents, combined with the study of ancient construction methods of PRECEDents. The final building is a public library and education center in Santiage de Chile, not far from the area where the ancient methods of the Inca civilization prevail. Our mid-rise design celebrates and interprets structural and constructional traditions, seeking to bridge the gap between elite education and public cultural resources.

Site selection Social issues

The chart on the left shows that the Northeast is extremely economically developed, but relatively underdeveloped relative to the rest of the Northeast, especially at the junction, where there are significant regional economic differences. In the graph on the right, it can be seen that segregation and discrimination are more frequent and larger in the East during the day. At the same time, the map of land use diversity shows that the central area is extremely rich in land use, and many areas around the city have not been developed and utilized.

It can be seen that the community population in area c and area f have great population differences, and the last picture also supports that the result of crowd isolation, the more the economy develops, the farther the social distance of the crowd, the lower the density. As mentioned above, we have chosen the area between Area C and Area f, trying to use a social attribute of the building to allow social isolation and people of different cultures to learn together in our building, providing a kind of community education and even social education It can shorten the social distance of people, let different cultures integrate and communicate here, and can also use this method of building construction to evoke thinking about traditional craftsmanship.

Although Shi can't speak, let me be the three friends" Taking Chinese Garden space as the prototype of the space creation, the atrium and the entrance of the No. 13 building each have a lake stone-shaped three-story tower with Taihu stone as a "mountain", forming a view of looking for mountains in the courtyard. The work combines the double stones in the room with the utensils on the desk. In the visualization, the sequence of the architectural space travel is reflected from the perspective of the desk, and the steps of tea props are realized in the movement of the space flow. Seek the ancient artistic conception of "stone as a friend" in the desk

The combination of sports, people, and space breaks the boundaries between site and people, space and space, and people and space, and intends to create a ubiquitous sports space, an urban atmosphere where sports can be everywhere. Through the analysis of different sports spaces, sports venues, and sports types, combined with the original venues, the specific breaking of the sports space is carried out. The diving space opens and closes, and the tram reshapes a new space, The flat-bottomed flip of the sports field...

As people’s movement rises and falls, underground trams pass by, the space also changes along with them, moving further and further...

06 On the Way of Gentrification Urban gentrification gentrifies Manhattan

Project Type: Studio Work Individual Work Instructor: Uriah Yan Site: Manhattan In New York In USA The High Way & Line(2020 Autumn) turned its eye on urban theories, and the paradoxical phenomenon emerged during the urban development.

Robert Moses gave Jacobs the gentrification area list with the money bag

“Floating in the sky of Manhattan, New York, this huge sphere floats. People in the city don't know when it came here. They can only see the old town houses step on the road leading to this giant creature, and spit out from the other end and turn into golden houses” The idea of this project was inspired by tiny public events as a paradoxical slice of the society – such as the debate between Jane Jacobs and Robert Moses. Today, 50 years later, Jacobs, who was praised and supported by the people, and the city lower Manhattan that she supported fell into the trap of capital gentrification, and even later became the inspiration for the establishment of high line Park, which made the residents of lower Manhattan drive away...

07 New Stock Exchange The future of New York Stock Exchange

Project Type: Studio Work Group Work Collaborator: Tianyi Yin Contribution: Model 70% Rendering 90% Analysis 67% Instructor: Ali Rahim

Continuous Space

The design mainly focuses on constructing the remaining space above the New York Stock Exchange. The demand for a new function has derived a new form different from the traditional one. Therefore, the concept of this project is to create a series of continuous spaces to make a connection between different layers, in which dialogue can happen between different functions. Among them, the design will use the feature of spatial continuity, create gaps in the core central space, and place the gaps in the main traffic core. Not only will this project create a new level of spatial hierarchy from the original continuity space, but also it will combine the exhibition space with the circulation. The servers are like exhibits in a gallery, and from the section, the visitors will witness the prosperity of New York Stock Exchange where transactions are conducted in the middle. The four spaces: server space, circulation, stock exchange, cables hanging from the top interact mutually to create a new type of exchange space in which people can feel the uniqueness of mechanical spaces.

PROCESS

FINAL

3 TENSEGRITY 2

DETAIL

The second tensegrity model is realized by designing the cross section. We deform the same cross-section and use it to create more cross-sections of different shapes, and then connect the them with wires in a sequence of 45 degrees each time. In the end we made a double-layer tensegrity model. The outer layer is red and the inner layer is white.

Tensegrity Diagram We designed an octagonal diagram. First, we scale it in the horizontal and vertical directions to form three variants. Secondly, we open holes on each node and connect different holes to form different cross-sectional shapes. Finally, we select specific cross-sectional shapes and connect them together with a certain angle to create a tensegrity model with both inner and outer layers.
