SPECIALTY DESIGN

Students use critical thinking skills through research, writing, decision, and problem solving. Emphasis is on the identification of a design problem that could be better met through more responsible design. Students choose a research topic with instructor approval.

In this senior level studio course, students develop a viable and visual solution for the project typically researched in ID420 Solutions incorporated environmentally sound, cost effective, and responsible design methods to influence an audience using creative delivery methods.

This studio course focuses on environmental issues concerning interior designers and the construction industry. Students participate in discussions and green design topics and learn about resources for improving indoor air quality and more responsible design choices. Following LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) analysis, a final project implements sustainable design methods technically and creatively.

Senior level studio course covers the physical and psychological factors that impact hospitality environments. Students are expected to graphically demonstrate original and viable solutions. Research on human factors, codes, and lighting are combined with product mix and multi-sensory aspects of design to influence perceived value to the customer.

PROGRAMMING & SCHAMETICS

LEED FOR SCHOOLS Daylight enters the classroom through a large central skylight. Special louvers built into the skylight control the amount of light allowed to enter the space. Power is provided by a roofing tile system comprised of an integrated photovoltaic solar array. A highly energy efficient heat recovery ventilator swaps the heat between the air intake and exhaust provides both hot and cold air. Government and utility rebate and incentive programs make it is cost effective. All of the above specifications contribute to possible LEED points.

LIGHTING STUDY

GUIDING PRINCIPLES 1. A sustainable clinic is incorporated to support the family in healthy child development. 2. Appropriate class rooms are designed for all child development skills. 3. An accessibly designed in-house kitchen supports easy preparation of nutritious meals. 4. Adjustable educational furniture and equipment are provided for better ergonomics to adapt to individual children sizes. 5. The open design of the library allows classes to educate family members while kids are occupied in an adjacent area.

The utility of the center is educational for children and parents learn basic fundamental of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Children and adults will be able to learn to respect one another with acceptable boundaries being set forth with reasonable expectations. An enormous library will offer classes for parents to educate themselves and check out reading materials. It will also offer multiple classes on parenting, child care, nutrition, vaccinations, potty training, colic, and at home games/activities and skills that they can take with them when they leave. Classes will be held for various age groups including; infants, preschoolers, toddlers, and after-school kids for educational and socialization purposes. A clinic is incorporated for vaccinations and healthy checkups to parents and children in order to maintain a healthy balance with their lifestyles.

The character of the space is uplifting and energizing. Bright joyful warm colors promote child development and growth in a high spirit learning environment. Students, parents, guests, and staff are welcomed into the community center with a smile and greeted with an open arm approach. A clean and healthy educational vision of an intercultural community working together as one for the better of society is intertwined into the seams of the structure. A nature theme promotes interaction and communication between family and staff.

The beauty is absorbed in the eye of the beholder when the individual themes (such as: lagoon, rainbow, caterpillar, bullfrogs, dragonflies, etc.) of each room comes to life encouraging the children to ask questions and explore with confidence. A symmetrical floor plan with colorful dashes will make it easy to find room locations. Furniture will be bold and bright to make all whom visit comfortable and at ease.

TOWNS PLACE PEDIATRICIAN CENTER

Original plan created in AutoCad then downloaded into Google SketchUp to produce a digital rendering. It was enhanced with the use of Creative Suite Photoshop.

Towns Place Pediatricians Center contributes to a healthy environment. C2C panels will be incorporated in

office areas and comprised of up to 82% recycled materials which can be recycled and reused. All furniture will be Greengaurd indoor air quality certified and/or contribute to LEED ecoScorecard credits to obtain environmental goals. Exam rooms and lavatory faucets specified will be low-flow with certification by WaterSense to meet GPA criteria. Urinals and commodes will be low-flow and waterless. CFL's fiber optic, LED, motion sensors, and day light dimmers, and solar panels will also assist to energy saving efficiency. A vegetative roof will be included to eliminate part of the footprint. Hybrid parking and bike racks will be available to lessen impact of air pollution. The original mechanical/electrical panels will be reused. As well as the stairs and columns will be kept intact to maintain interior nonstructural components. Regional materials will be selected when possible. Flooring will be made from natural and/or reclaimed products.

Exterior Hand Drawn Rendering of what the Classical Baby Grand Hotel’s front facade would look like at night after the Happy Noodle Restaurant was built. The Classical Baby Grand Hotel is located in downtown Athens, Greece. Its rooms are designed by a number of Greek graffiti artists. The garden-inspired lobby was designed by Socratis Socratous. It incorporates a monkey hanging from a branch, which leads to the elevators. The reception area is on the second floor and uses Mini Cooper cars as check in desks for the guests. Each room has a personal theme or character inspiration. The hotel originally has one restaurant called “Meat Me” where traditional Greek food is served.

Aesthetic application & Model description I began to experiment with different ways to create a wood model with a noodle concept as inspiration for a ceiling application. At first it seemed complex, although, gradually I began to understand what I would have to do to make each row look as though it was in motion. I figured out if each time I made a new row of curved lines, I was to move the shape down and over just a nudge, it would work. Then I would slice each row in half from the center. With the mirror reflection from each piece in hand, the model could be built from front to back and vice versa.

Happy Noodle Restaurant at the Classical Baby Grand Hotel: Athens, Greece Upon entering the Happy Noodle Restaurant from the first floor at the Classical Baby Grand Hotel is the bar area. Guests have the option to either dine in or take out. A variety of fresh juices and bubble teas are available to match every guestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desires. Guests are encouraged to purchase Happy Noodle Box lunches and take them with them on their way into town where they can eat in the park. A souvenir from the restaurant is included in the price of the box lunch for them to save as a keepsake. The walls are mainly finished with noodle design MDF board and a variety of other interesting motifs which embrace the bubble tea, noodle dishes and sushi/fruit-shi (fruit sushi) concept.

Restaurant Branding Guests have the opportunity to view the menu in an window display case outside the Happy Noodle Restaurant before entering. Walking into the Happy Noodle from the street side of the building is and exciting experience. The Happy Noodle characters are graffiti on the wall behind the reception desk and are glowing from the built in LCD lamps illuminating the design. Happy Noodle characters will be hung throughout the space to add interest and move the guests freely towards the main dining area. The restaurant is â&#x20AC;&#x153;little peopleâ&#x20AC;? friendly and gives complementary cups with every kids meal featuring the Happy Noodle Characters on them.

Hotel Store Branding The Classical Baby Grand Retail Shop is illuminated with bright lights to energize guests and drive them into the space. A textured tin ceiling enhances the ceilings height and gives a grandiose feeling about the space. Harmony is created by placing merchandise around the room and in the wall display shelves. Merchandise is designed around the individual graffiti rooms and the Happy Noodle Restaurant. Therefore, the public and hotel guests can purchase any of the graffiti patterns they like or they may gear their purchase directly towards the room theme in which they are staying in during their visit.

Splash Graphics Inc. is a high energy graphic design firm based in Chicago, IL. The design approach is guided by the desire to capture the water dynamic and replicate it’s character within the space by imitating the movement of water. Welcoming areas, group work areas, and quiet areas will be built-in to encourage creativity. The general color scheme is cool neutrals and incorporates splashes of fun inspirational pops of color.

WAYFINDING TECHNIQUES 1. Shimmer Screens add visual privacy and make it easy to find shared client & staff areas. 2. Colorful “S” shaped curved wall adds

architectural interest to the central circulation area and defines the color palette.

3. Distinct floor changes clearly define areas of interest throughout the floor plan and allow guests and staff to easily find their destination.

4. Custom sofa in the shape of a water droplet points guests back towards reception area.

5. Circular shaped small conference area with

glass enclosure leads guests towards CEO and Business offices.

The Copy/Fax/ Supply Room at Splash Graphics Inc. meets the needs of the employees. Along the North wall in the Copy/Fax/Supply Room is a combination of shelves, cabinets and countertop space. It is 16’-6” long. It manages to store all of the supplies and gives space for employees to spread out documents for copy & fax purposes. The room is long and narrow. The chrome ceiling replicates the reflective the qualities of water and gives the user the illusion of a larger space.

HISTORY OF DESIGN III

This senior level elective studio covers the total process of residential design from concept development through two-and three-dimensional presentations. Building codes, covenants, and restrictions create the guidelines for solutions, while knowledge of sustainable practices, residential business practice, construction methods, materials and custom interior architectural details are applied.

This studio course explores various types of residential dwellings as they relate to different inhabitants. Project work applies the programming and design development phases of the residential design process to include information gathering, needs analysis, concept and spatial development, and FF&E selections based on research and stability.

Internship is a monitored program for senior level students to work part time within the interior design industry. Field experience is an opportunity for students to apply and advance their knowledge, skills and professionalism under the supervision of a qualified mentor.

This course challenges students to use planning requirements to create universal and accessible designs. Construction, electrical, and basic plumbing are taught with emphasis on these applications within residential kitchens and baths. Industry relevant nomenclature and product information are used to create technical documents and custom aesthetic solutions.

This studio presents a study of the architecture and furniture developments of several major nonwestern cultures. Religious, philosophical and social beliefs and customs are emphasized while construction methods, building, materials, motifs, fabrics, and decorative arts are explored. Students work within teams to present their research on chosen culture. Projects include the development of furniture and accessory designs created through the fusion of world styles.

Residential Design

The Forester Residence BARRINGTON, ILLINOIS

Perspective Dropped interior wall allows the eye to visualize the entire room at a glance and creates a circular flow about the space. Dropped ceiling blocks accented with low voltage puck shaped halogen lights function as accessories. Natural light shines in from the Northeast corner of the room attributes to energy savings & fresh air.

Materials Custom stained and hand crafted bathroom vanity is made from calming teak wood. Pearlescent white vases displayed a tri-levels enhance the vertical appearance of the space. Bronze Kyle One Tier chandelier with three down lights and metal scrollwork hangs over the tub. Fontaine single handle wall mounted faucets are paired with high quality Stone Forest Verona Vessel Sink for an awe - inspiring look.

Elevation Black shell tile featured on the vanity is carried over behind the tub to add character to the wall and unify the design. Asymmetrical balance is achieved by offsetting accessories with hanging fixtures. Travertine stone, used as flooring and baseboard, is laid over the face of the tub and vertically in the shower area for visual interest. The rustic window frame, faucet, vessel sink, and light fixtures bring together a natural appearance.

Materials Made with a sturdy steel frame and playful solid wood balls, Eames HangIt-All, Limited Edition in multi-color with a black frame was produced by Herman Miller. Duralee’s polyester/acrylic blend fabric is part of the Sanibel Collection and is specified in a fabulous Blue Ocean color to embrace the childish color scheme with an edge of playfulness. White-painted walls and light wooden panels bring forth the beauty of nature throughout the room.

Materials The Roll Fire fireplace by Conmoto will warm your heart the same way it warms your fingers and toes. The sculptural ultra-modern fireplace can easily face any direction to turn the room into a comfy cocoon for the winter. The Egg Chair with a tilt mechanism allows for relaxed lounging. It is dressed in a custom Clarke & Clarke Congo Spice fabric. The space becomes a tranquil and earth bounding zone. Flooring is constructed of natural stones equipped with the “heated” option.

The Markham Residence ST. CHARLES, ILLINOIS

Interior Perspective of Living Area created with AutoCAD with an applied visual technique to make it appear hand drawn. Drawing was copied onto marker paper and rendered with both marker and color pencils. Once it was complete it was scanned into Create Suite Photoshop for touch ups and resizing.

Designed to bring the arts to life thru the interior specifications, finishes, and furniture. A gallant warm color palette brings power to the space and character to the open floor plan. Metallic industrial surfaces keep a current modern feel prevalent and are easy to keep clean. Textured fabric and art work add variety and flare to the walls and furniture. The design satisfies the clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desire to have a separate private area from the public area for the dance school. The open area has direct access to the dance school for socializing and hosted culinary parties. Digital drawings were created in Revit. Materials were then added before it was saved and enhanced with the help of Creative Suite Photoshop

The Harper Residence CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

The East Section of the Harper's residence was designed in Revit. It showcases the living area on the left with access to upstairs master bed/bath, office and second bedroom areas. The first floor incorporates a privately accessible dance school.

The South Section of the Harper's residence emphasizes the kitchen area, dining area, and living area. The living area has cathedral ceilings and a sliding glass partition between it and the dance school. The glass doors can be opened for entertaining large parties.

Above Google SketchUp drawing is influenced by the Royal Alcazar, Spain and combines Almohad architectural features. Geometrical patterns of stars, interlacing polylobed arches, and shell motifs are characteristics seen at the Royal Alcazar and in the above modern interior perspective. The ceiling is entirely wood. Wrought iron polylobed details are placed above the window frame. The beautiful wall tiles are influence by the Moorish.

The Alvarez Residence

OAKBROOK, ILLINOIS

Orthographic Drawings of Iran & Tahiti Inspired Fusion Furniture Piece This custom designed Iran & Tahitian inspired bed frame is made primarily of bamboo. The banana leaf and mosaic tile inlay on the head board incorporates the bamboo stick cross motif in the center. The color scheme is pulled from the plantation in Tahiti and the Green Palace in Iran.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS THEME BOARD

FABRIC WALL DISPLAY DESIGNED FOR THE CHICAGO DESIGN TEAM’S SHOWROOM The wall was about H 11’ x W 3’ from floor to ceiling. It would take nearly two full days to get the above fabric display to hang just as we imagined. With the assistance of another intern and a showroom representative we learned to understand simple displays tricks and techniques used in showrooms to showcase desired fabrics. Above Fabric Vendors: Clarke & Clarke, Stroheim, Vervain

The first project I created while at Chicago Design Team allowed me to become familiar with numerous fabric vendors. It also taught me the importance of discontinued fabrics. The timeliness of purchasing fabrics and being aware of a price point is very much relevant when working with a client. If there is plenty of the fabric available and the quality is what your client is interested in then it is a perfect fit.

RECREATE THE ROOM As an intern at Chicago Design Team in Arlington Heights, IL I gained valuable

experience

from working directly with the vendors on this project. I was to find a picture from a magazine and recreate the room utilizing the vendors at CDT. This process of locating and pricing FF&E gave me the opportunity to become comfortable with budgeting and the resources available to designers.
