UNDER THE SUN 5TH YEAR THESIS

This thesis is split into two parts. The first, a project resulting from the study on how architecture functions as monuments and symbols. This project operates in the context of Philippine State architecture and its relationship to the Filipino people, through the urban fabric of Batasan Hills and the Philippines House of Representatives the Batasang Pambansa. The second part is an investigation on a new system of implementing Information Communication Technology career centers that can relieve the pace of urbanization and address the country’s high national risk index. Done by means of design strategies that make shifting programs adaptable and resilient in the face of harsh climates. In addition to a design process driven by community involvement that hopes to offer community agency in reclaiming what is “Filipino Architecture”

I. BALIKBAYAN CENTER

Like most cases of urbanization, rural popoulations moved where work was available. After researching the effects of urbanization in Manila in conjunction with the information on the the high vulnerabilty to natural disaster of the Phillipines according to the World Risk Index, the idea was struck Could a network of modulese and remote work spaces relieve Manila’s crowded city centers?

II. CAREER CENTER NETWORK

I UNDER THE SUN PART ONE

Career Center Network Ideation The possibility of this network was partially sparked as a result of the Covid-19 epidemic. The workplace adapted to incorporate remote workplaces where connectivity to a larger company can be done in greater distances.

PART ONE I. BALIKBAYAN CENTER The result of a 5th year investigion researching the relationship between the Philippines State, Filipino people, and the representation of power. Part One focuses on This tense relationships manifestation in the urban fabric of Batasan Hills. Where the Philippines House of Representatives sits atop sprawling informal housing settlements on the base of a hill

How can a government respond to widespread infrastructural needs and both serve and represent its people The needs of the Filipino perople do not concentrate in one geographical place. Part II is a how a modular network of Information Communcation technology centers can solve varied infrustructural needs to better prepare the Philippines by providing secondary education and work facilities to its immediate context. In times of natural disaster these modules serve as evacuation and communications outpost to coordinate disaster relief as the Philippines

VERNACULAR RESEARCH | BAHAY KUBO WHAT IS FILIPINO ARCHITECTURE?

DEMOCRATIC DESIGN PROCESS RESEARCH HOW DO WE DESIGN INCLUSIVELY?

Simple sillhoutes reinforced by steel memebers and elevated by concrete piers and podiums- these modules are intended to be modular and reflect an evolution of the Bahay Kubo (Filipino indegenous vernacular) at the appropriate scale. Orthagonal grids make adaptation for different programs for different communities with different needs simple. The combination of its geometry and material reflect familiar and commonly used methods of Filipino houses today.

DEMOGRAPHIC RESEARCH HOW DO WE DESIGN INCLUSIVELY?

Implementation Research | A Democratic Design Process? A large driving force of UNDER THE SUN is restoring the Filipino people’s confidence in a government. Architecture in its conscription and process has played a large role in damaging that relationship as corrupt dictators have used architecture to boast a false sense of success on the global theatre. A large portion of Part II went into researching where in the design process can communities weigh in on the designs and projects meant to serve them.

III. VICINITY

4TH YEAR |SF URBAN STUDIO Description Where high density housing is new in the urban fabric of the Mission District, Vicinity is affordable housing that reflects resilience and steadfast in the face of constant movement and change. A design that strives to encourage its inhabitants and surrounding community to take root and grow from locality and catalyzes growth for the future. All while upgrading the exisiting context by implementing program and spacial experiences that synergizes with adjacent streets.

A1 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

After the initial design phase and we split off as individuals to further iterate our simple massings. Our group decided on a simple massing that continued the connection from Virgil to Cesar Chavez. This break in an otherwise solid mass preserves the views to the hillside of Bernal Heights. This Pathway will be publicly accesible during daylight hours and serves as an interior plaza for the residents of Vicinity and Casa Adalante

Ground Connection Programing for the ground floor units took the differences between Cesar Chavez, 26th, South Van Ness, and Shotwell into consideration. The retail and commercial spaces that line South Van Ness meet with the townhouses that line the much quieter 26th street with a corner Cafe. The much more trafficked corner of South Van Ness and Cesar Chaves meet with a larger grocery store than that of shotwell and 26th which features a smaller corner neighborhood store to the transition to quieter neighborhoods. The quieter roads of Shotwell and 26th are where the main access points of Vicinity are located.

V. 3RD YEAR DOUBLE QUARTER LANDING 2070 Landing is a 22 story, mixed-use project aimed to demystify the supportive housing design of downtown Los Angeles. As a beacon of steel and glass, this project aims to mitigate a major obstacle separating low-income individuals to the support spaces they need- distance. By embedding support space with housing, architecture can take out extra steps to move forward.

VI Rendering to Real Life| Scorpio Coffee Description

Working as a barista in an area as passionate about coffee as Sacramento gave me the unique opportunity to connect with equally passionate people. One such person; my friend and former manager, Sam Balean, was looking to open his coffee shop in midtown Sacramento and had leased the space to do so. He had meticulously planned how he wanted the space to look but needed help projecting his idea to the contractors and engineers that would help him construct the shop. Winter of 2019/2020 after measuring the empty space and analyzing existing floor plans I fully modelled the proposed interior of the new shop.

VII WALKER WARNER INTERNSHIP

SUMMER 2022 - WINTER 2023 Exploring new workflow options for in-office marketing renders. Path tracing renders required extra detail and special coordination picking views with project teams. These exercises helped determine turn over time, extent of pathtracing utilization, and refining of workflow and planning in order to bring a project into pathtracing level detail.
