Example of a yr7 Computer Generated Image

This is a 4 week homework project.

Your objective is to create a Computer Generated Image (CGI) using sourced images, images you have taken yourself and image editing applications in a variety of ways.

There is NO set theme for this work, you can create an image using any theme which you like.

The main purpose of the project is to let you experience the use of computer software to make digital Art!

A key to you being successful during this extended task will be how well you manage your time. Don't try to do all of the in one go. Make sure that you READ all of the instructions with care, and if you need help, ask. Remember you can always post a request for help using the discussion forum on the course home page. Use all of the resources on the main task page for help and assistance during your project.

Task 1: Obtaining source images. •

You can use any type of computer software to help you create your work. Ideally you will also use an original (primary) image within you final piece too, however if this is not possible don't worry.

There are many ways that you can find and use pictures such as searching and saving images from the internet, scanning images into your PC using a scanner from books magazines or newspapers.

The aim for this extended task is for you to be as inventive as possible. If you have a scanner, you could scan 3D objects too like the palm of your hand, an mp3 player, a deck of cards, a set

of keys or key ring. Be experimental and try out lots of different ways to make original images.

If you do not have a scanner, then maybe you have access to a digital camera/ phone? Take pictures instead of scanning!

When you have a selection of 'source images' (try to have at least 3 or more images) you are ready for the next task.

Task 2: Find or install image editing software on your PC.

All computers have some form of image editing software. Some are basic and other more advanced. If you have a digital camera or camera phone, chances are that they came with some software that allows you to edit and manipulate your pictures.

Search your programs on your computer for all image editing software. If you are unsure, ask your parents/ carers for their help.

If you do not have any image editing software you could always use the EXPLORE section on the task page. Inside the LINKS section there are links to some FREE online websites that will allow you to upload your images and edit them online!

You could also install a FREE 30 day trial of more powerful software onto your PC (make sure that you ask permission before you do this). Links to the 30 day free trials are also inside the LINKS folder in the EXPLORE section of the task page.

When you have found or installed some software go to the next task.

Task 3: Practise using your image editing software.

Before you begin work on your CGI, explore the tools inside your chosen software. Find out what you can do and how you can modify and manipulate images.

Practise editing an image by opening a picture inside your software, or uploading a picture into one of the free online websites and PLAY with the tools so that you learn what they all do.

After meaningful practise, save your practise image to your PC. Make sure you give it a useful file name and if possible put it into a folder so that you can locate all of your easily.

Go to the EXPLORE section and download the WORKSHEET to your PC. Save a copy of this worksheet to your Art folder before you begin to complete it.

The first section of the worksheet is where you add evidence of your practise work.

Try to complete the worksheet as much as possible and add as much detail (comments) as possible too.

After you have completed the first section (Practise) of the worksheet, save it to your PC. Then go to the next task below:

Task 4: Creating your CGI image.

After successfully completing your practise image (Task 3 above) you should be ready to begin work on your main CGI. Using the sourced images that you collected (Task 1) upload them into your website or open them into your software.

Use a range of tools that your image editing application provide to manipulate and change your image.

Use the TOP TIPS worksheet in the EXPLORE/ WORKSHEETS section for more help with this.

Your final work should use a combination of effects, original sourced images, backgrounds and layers.

When you complete your CGI save a copy to your PC in the same folder as your practise CGI and your worksheet.

Make sure that when you save your image it uses a JPEG or JPG file format. Ask a parent or carer for help with this or post a request for help inside the course discussion forum and I or someone will help you.

Next open your worksheet and complete the second section (Main CGI) as much as you can, remember to add as much detail about your work, as well as a copy of your itself.

Submitting your work into the course SHARED AREA.

When you have finished your CGI Worksheet you need to UPLOAD a copy of this into the SHARED AREA of your online course.

The shared area is located on the course HOME page on the right hand side under the eTv logo.

Click on the shared area button to go inside. You should see a sub folder inside called: EXTENDED HWK P1. This is the folder where you should add your worksheet. To do this click on the text or folder to go inside of it.

Then use the UPLOAD function which is located on the upper left of the screen.

Use the BROWSE buttons to locate you CGI Worksheet from your PC, when you find your work select it and click OPEN.

Then click on the OK button under the BROWSE buttons to confirm that you wish to upload your work.

Check that your work can be viewed by clicking on it.

That's it! Good luck.
