PROJECT
Redesign the gift shop at the Four Points by Sheraton, Chicago O’hare.
CURRENT FUNCTIONAL ISSUES
Gift shop currently has no storefront presence within the lobby
Extremely cluttered, translating into a frustrating shopping experience
Hidden nooks from the visibility of the cashier
No storage space for multiples of an item of merchandise
Not wheelchair friendly
Space is dark and dingy with poor lighting
The gift shop is not visible to customers entering the lobby from the dining and lounge till they turn around and hence loss of sales.
THE DESIGN
DESIGN CONCEPTS
Increase the transparency of the gift shop space
Use aesthetic composition concepts to improve the spatial presence of the gift shop within the lobby space
Create a storefront for window shopping
Increase free floor space and use more wall space for display of merchandise to make the experience less claustrophobic
Easy visibility of customers entering/shopping/exiting the store for the cashier
Simplify the display of merchandise for an uncluttered, quick and smooth shopping experience
Create adequate, easily accessible storage for multiples of all merchandise
Wheel Chair accessibility
PROPOSED PLAN
Gift shop foot print = 13.67’ square Floor area = 186.87 sqft
The design intent is to create an illusion that the gift shop is bigger than its actual foot print to improve its visibility in the hotel’s lobby. Hence the creation of the backlit slatted façade wall facing the lobby.
Hot spots to draw customers into the gift shop. Replacing the current opaque enclosure of the gift shop with glass walls will improve its visibility and sales.
