Welcome to the Library What does the Library offer? A quiet space for you to read, do research and complete extended learning Lots of books, including non-fiction to help with your research and fiction for reading for pleasure The Library gets a selection of magazines, including Match, Shout and Top Gear National and local daily and weekly newspapers Computers with internet access, from which you can print work for your extended learning Extended Learning Club where, as well as the Librarian, a further member of staff will be available to support you with your work

Borrowing Rules You can borrow up to four books at one time You get to keep books for three weeks You will be sent a reminder letter if your books are not returned by their due date If you have overdue books, you will not be able to borrow any further books until they are returned

Non-Fiction and the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) System The Dewey Decimal Classification System was developed by Melville Dewey. The DDC system groups books together, so that they are ordered by their subject. The system was invented so that books were easier to find, with those about similar things closer together.

What is SearchStar? SearchStar is the Library’s very own search engine. You can use SearchStar to search for resources in the Library, just like using an internet search engine like Google. To access SearchStar, double click the Library Management System internet icon on your desktop. Then click SearchStar, which will open a new window for your search. Click SearchStar

The SearchStar program looks like this.

Type the word rugby into the simple search box and press enter. How many results are there? _________ What class, or Dewey, number do the books have? _________ Double-clicking a book record will bring up a new window, with even more information.

Searching for books using advanced search You can use the advanced search facility to perform more detailed, specific searches for books.

Search using keyword Type your subject keyword here, then press enter

Click on the blue box and select “keywords”

Click the arrow and select “Equal to”

Use one of the subjects from the worksheet on page 5 to search as a keyword. Look at the results: 1. Writing a Book Review in Search Star The Library’s catalogue Search Star has a book review facility. To add your own review on a book that you have borrowed, follow these steps: 1. Open Eclipse and then Search Star 2. Click on the ‘My Account’ icon on the left side of the page

3. In the new window, click on the ‘Reviews’ tab. This gives you a list of all the books that you have borrowed, which you can add reviews for 4. Highlight the book you’d like to review by clicking once on it, then click the ‘Review’ button

5. This will open the review window where, under the ‘Ratings’ tab you get to rate the book on how funny, scary etc. it was. Click on the rating you would like to give the book under each of the questions

6. Then click on the ‘Review’ tab. Here you get to add your own review of the book. Some questions have been added here, which will help you write about the book you are reviewing… just add your answers to the questions. 7. Once you have finished your review, click on the ‘Save’ button 8. Your review will be submitted to the Librarian to be approved

To See Reviews on a Book If you search for a book you would like to borrow, you might want to see if anyone else has read and reviewed it. To see if a book you have found on Search Star has any reviews: 1. Double-click on a record to open the particular book’s details 2. Then click on the ‘Reviews’ tab to see a list of all the people that have reviewed that book. 3. Double-click in someone’s name to read their review and see what they said about the book

Meet the Author If you are looking for fiction books using Search Star, you might notice the ‘Meet the Author’ logo This means that this book has a video of the author talking about the book!! All you need to do is click on the icon and either Quick Time or Windows Media Player will open and play the video automatically.

Using World Book Online World Book Online is an online encyclopaedia which you can use to find information on just about anything. This is a great tool for if you need to find out a fact, start some research, or look up information about someone famous (like an inventor, scientist, or sportsperson). Instead of using Google to search the internet for information, try World Book Online first. To access this facility: 1. Click on the World Book icon on the desktop. This will open Internet Explorer and take you straight to the World Book website 2. From here you can search the website using the ‘Search’ facility. Just type in a keyword and see what comes up.

3. You can browse the ‘Biography Center’ to find information about famous people from history 4. Find out about a different countries by using the ‘Explore’ facility
