Resources to help encourage reading for pleasure, develop literacy and raise achievement
Books (fiction) There is a range of fiction and non‐fiction books in the Library. A broad range of fiction is available for pupils of all abilities in order to encourage reading for pleasure and to encourage the emotional and social development of our pupils.
Audio Books and Listening Books The Library has a range of audio books on CD, including versions of books being studied in English. These will be valuable to those with low‐literacy, allowing pupils to access books in an alternative medium from reading from the page. The Library has also subscribed to an online audio‐book service, called Listening Books (http://www.listening‐books.org.uk/), which provides audio‐books streamed through their website. The service allows a whole class to listen to a book through your interactive whiteboard, or for individuals to listen independently (up to 30 at one time) using a PC. To access the service visit the website and log‐in using the following details: Username:

Accelerated Reader Pupils in years seven and eight are enrolled on the Accelerated Reader programme. This reading tool assesses pupils’ reading levels (the data from which is available) and recommends books based on this, helping pupils to find and read books that are appropriate. Once pupils read a book from the scheme (from which there are a huge number), they are able to take an online quiz which tests their understanding of the book. Passing quizzes will help to inspire pupils to read further, and therefore develop their literacy. To encourage reading and participation in Accelerated Reader, merits are given for passing quizzes, and prizes awarded on a termly basis.
Newspapers and magazines There are a range of magazines and newspapers available in the Library for staff and pupils. The Library gets national daily newspapers (The Mirror and The Guardian) and a weekly newspaper called First News, which is specifically written for young people. Book‐Swap Box There is a book‐swap box in the Library. Pupils can bring in books they do not want to keep any more, but think others might like to read, and add them to the swap‐box, as well as taking away any books that have been added by others. This has been put in place to encourage the reading, and swapping, of great books.
Resources for Staff Books There is a growing collection of books, DVDs and other publications such as those produced by SSAT, DCSF, etc. The books and DVDs can be found on the Library catalogue via SearchStar if you would like to see the full list.
Book‐Swapping in the Library If you fancy something to read, why not check the Library’s book‐swapping shelf. You can bring in any old books you think others might like to read, or just come in and take something already donated. There is an eclectic selection (a few of which are pictured below) already waiting to be taken away, so pop in and take a look.
