C o n t ex t The goal of this project was to design a small free standing bed and breakfast home with the corresponding lot in the province Zuid-Holland. The program and area of the house were given but both had to be examined in order to create a coherent design. In the first five weeks, I worked with a team to research the boundary conditions of the design. What kind of measeurements were needed? And what should be the exact location in the area where you can fullfill the wishes of the client from this assignment? It were these kind of questions that had to be answered while presenting the results of the research. Afterwards, we had to develop a concept drawing for the house itself individually and work that out to a complete substantiated design in five weeks. The finished result had to be posters with a maquette.

C o n tex t The title of this design studio was: ‘‘Designing and engineering.’’ This already suggests that this project is more focused on the combination of designing with the technological aspect of it. We were asked to design a small utilitarian building, in this case a rowing club, at a given location in Amsterdam with special attention for the spatial- as well as the material design. During the design process, we came across different disciplines. From planning in urban context to detailing of connections in the building structures and calculating the supporting structure. By integrating these different disciplines, an overall plan is formed. Always taking the environmental aspects into account. Also, the climate design is part of this overall plan. The overall plan had to be presented with posters and some supportive scale models.

C o n tex t This course was an introduction to urban design. The focus was on a certain location around the Erasmus medical Center and Museum Park in Rotterdam. At this project work is done on different scales, from the city as a whole to the details in the public space. In the first few weeks, a urban vision is formed about the whole area. This was done in teams. Afterwards, every team member got its own ‘part’ of the urban vision to furhter develop into a urban design. At the same time, various small designs were made to examine the relationship between abstract vision and concrete public space. The focus at our specific group was put on to the historical context of the area and the application of the bike as the primary means of transport. This was done by designing a whole new urban space without any roads but only bike lanes. Also, without removing any of the existing buildings but using their qualities and giving them a contemporary transformation, the historical print is kept in place. My part was also about finding an approriate design for an area were startup companies could establish themselves and providing them with a healthy business climate in the public space (Silicon Maas).

C o n tex t In the fourth design studio, we got to work on a design for an ensemble of existing and new residential buildings in Slotervaart, Amsterdam. It was also asked to design the connecting collective space between these buildings. In groups, the location and context was analyzed and with that information, a new urban plan was formed. It was really important with this plan, not only to focus on the architectural quality and living comfort, but also to its collective space or its ‘social sustainability.’ Later on, every group member gets a part of the urban plan to furhter develop into a full elaborate design. This part must contain a new constructed- but also a renovation part. Moreover, a part of the urban space is designed. The outcomes were mostly presented in sections to show the cohesion between the elements and how they interact with eachother. It was furthermore asked to choose one of the elements (renovation or new) and furhter detail it with construction drawings and a more comprehensive facade design. The new part of my design consisted of small self-build homes but with written out guidelines and examples of homes and facades.

C o n tex t In this team project, one of the exercises was the central point in which already built designs of residential environments and the ideas behind them are examined by means of comparative plan analysis. As a team, you get one main project which in my case was the Borneo Sporenburg project in Amsterdam by west 8. Every team member gets one reference project. Our goal was to constantly compare the reference projects to the main project. Eventually, you had to create a showcase display in which you would present the vision behind the main project. This also included different found striking features from the project. Furthermore, a small-form report was requested wherein you showed the hand drawn comparsions with the other reference projects on different scale levels; city; neighborhood; residential block and the house. We ended up with a model that did not only show the differentiation in the project, but also the meeting of all the elements by looking to the model from a distance and seeing it become a whole.

This project was part of the overall Technology 5 course which was about dwelling technology. Especially at this course, there was explicit attention to the technical aspects of reusing residential buildings. The goal was to technically redesign an outdated residential building in Delft (in this case it was the Tingieterpad) so that it would meet the technical requirements of today. To achieve that, an analyisis of the whole constructional part of the building is made in the first place. Then, the weak parts are getting improved by adding, removing and changing parts of the existing design. Al this was done in a team of three people. After that, every member of the group gets a part of the building for redesigning the facade. This was done in such a way that every member end up with its own redesign of the facade. I made the decision of using the Modulogreen system and an angled solar panel system so that not only the appearance of the facade would be improved but also its thermal, acoustic and energy genereating quality. Challenge with this, was to deail the system correctly to the already existing facade without having to remove a lot of the old facade.
