NO. 1 Kwabena Anefie Street Dzorwulu-‐ Accra accra.alt@gmail.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FOURTH ANNUAL CHALE WOTE STREET ART FESTIVAL The fourth annual CHALE WOTE Street Art Festival takes place in James Town on August 23rd and 24th 2014. CHALE WOTE is produced by ACCRA [dot] ALT and a host of collaborators across the city including the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Redd Kat Picutures , Institute Français, The Foundation for Contemporary Art – Ghana, Dr. Monk, No Limits Charity and The Attukwei Art Foundation. The third edition of the CHALE WOTE Street Art Festival held on September 7th and 8th 2013 was a major success and the collective effort of many young people— ranging from artists, musicians and writers to designers, students and activists— who worked together to produce West Africa’s only street art festival. The two-‐day festival included graffiti murals, film screenings, Theater, installations, live music performances, a fashion circus, extreme sport stunting, dance, spoken word and art workshops. The festival drew over 3,000 people last year; a lot more people are expected to attend this fourth edition. CHALE WOTE 2014 welcomes installation projects by internationally acclaimed participants – mixed media/visual artist Rasik Green [Johannesburg, SA], dance performance artist Yinka Esi Graves [US, theater performance artist Florine Demosthene [Brooklyn, NY USA], visual and installation artist Charlotte Chapman [UK] and Edwin Sacasa [US] are amongst the visiting artists creating at CHALE WOTE this year. Ghanaian visual artists Ibrahim Mahama, Bernard Akoi-‐Jackson, Adjoa Amoah, Ato Annan, Atuukwei Clottey and I.U.B. have some of the most compelling exhibitions at the festival. What else is happening at CHALE WOTE this year? • More than 120 artists are taking part in this year’s two-‐day festival. Eight international artists -‐ from South Africa, France, U.S and the UK and Denmark -‐ will feature their work at CHALE WOTE 2013. 30 Ghanaian visual artists will erect cutting edge exhibitions of their work on High Street. • Two-‐day film screenings and digital art installation [23rd and 24th] • Live music at the High Life Café, DJ Masquerade block party [Sat. 23rd] and beach concert [Sun 24th] • Interactive procession by the Takoradi Masquerade [Sat. 24th] • The Accra Cookout – an international food court [Sat 23-‐Sun 24th] • The Fashion Marketplace – fashion vendors, street fashion circus, and Photo exhibitions and portrait galleries by Ofoe Amegavie and TJ Letsa. There will be historical walking tours of James Town on each day of the festival.
