‘I’m afraid,’ Sanele cried to her mother. ‘It’s so dark in my room and there are monsters under my bed.’

‘No child,’ said her mother, bending over to look under the bed.
‘There’s nothing there, Sanele. Only dust. No monsters. I’ll leave the light on for you. Now go to sleep.’

Her mother opened the curtains and looked into the night.
‘It’s just a branch scraping against the window. Tomorrow I’ll cut off that branch from the avocado tree,’ she said. ‘I’ll help you,’ said Sanele.
