Autumn 2016

This past year has seen some outstanding achievements for us at Jacaranda as we move further into developing our voice and building our identity as a publisher. TRAM 83, our Man Booker International longlisted novel, and BUTTERFLY FISH, a recent Betty Trask Award winner, provide the industry-wide sanction any new company craves and requires. The old adage: ‘start as you mean to go on’ sees us looking at an autumn list no less thought-provoking or exciting. Accomplished American novelist Bernice L. McFadden provides our fiction feature for the season with THE BOOK OF HARLAN, while British historian Stephen Bourne takes us back to the jazz age of the 1920s with an illustrated biography of cabaret star EVELYN DOVE. Publishing today is not for the faint of heart and it requires nerves of steel. Our belief in ourselves as a company championing diversity, our respect and passion for the many brilliant authors we have discovered and who have discovered us, and our internal development as a vibrant house of four very vocal and high-spirited women, gives me the confidence and the energy to look beyond the current social turmoil and to view our success as a solid company for many years to come. These are for you, dear readers. Valerie Brandes Founder and Publisher

EVELYN DOVE: BRITAIN’S BLACK CABARET QUEEN STEPHEN BOURNE

ISBN: 978-1-909762-35-0 eISBN: 978-1-909762-36-7 OCTOBER 2016 Illustrated biography Binding: Paperback, 225 x 166 mm Extent: 160 pp Price: £12.99 Rights: World

The untold story of one of Britain’s most versatile singers and performers of the 1920s and 30s Evelyn Dove embraced the worlds of jazz, musical theatre and, most importantly, cabaret, in a career spanning five decades from the 1920s through to the 1960s. A black British diva with movie star looks; she captivated audiences and admirers around the world, enjoying the same appeal as the ‘Forces Sweetheart’ Vera Lynn throughout the Second World War. Refusing to be constrained by her race or middle– class West African and English backgrounds, she would become a regular vocalist for the BBC and a celebrated performer across continental Europe, India and the US. At the height of her fame in the 1930s, she worked with the pioneers of black British theatre, replacing Josephine Baker as the star attraction in a revue at the Casino de Paris and scandalizing her family by appearing on stage semi-nude.

Jacaranda

This is a celebration of an extraordinary career punctuated with vertiginous highs and profound lows, and places Dove in historical context with artists of her time, such as Adelaide Hall, Dame Cleo Laine and Dame Shirley Bassey. STEPHEN BOURNE has been specialising in black British histories since 1991. He has written over 15 books, including the acclaimed Black in the British Frame, Elisabeth Welch: Soft Lights and Sweet Music and The Motherland Calls: Britain’s Black Servicemen and Women 1939-1945. Stephen received the 2015 Southwark Arts Forum Award for Literature for Black Poppies: Britain’s Black Community and the Great War. He is a regular contributor to BBC documentaries and has written for many publications, including The Voice, The Independent, BBC History Magazine and History Today.

THE BOOK OF HARLAN BERNICE L. MCFADDEN

ISBN: 978-1-909762-43-5 eISBN: 978-1-909762-44-2 OCTOBER 2016 Historical fiction Binding: Demy paperback Extent: 400 pp Price: £9.99 Rights: World, excl. North America & the Caribbean

‘This is a story about the triumph of the human spirit over bigotry, intolerance and cruelty, and at the center of The Book of Harlan is the restorative force that is music.’ Washington Post ‘McFadden packs a powerful punch with tight prose and short chapters that bear witness to key events in early twentieth-century history.’ Booklist The Book of Harlan opens with the courtship of Harlan’s parents and his 1917 birth in Macon, Georgia. After his prominent minister grandfather dies, Harlan and his parents move to Harlem, where he eventually becomes a professional musician. When Harlan and his best friend, trumpeter Lizard Robbins, are invited to perform at a popular cabaret in the Parisian enclave of Montmartre— affectionately referred to as “The Harlem of Paris” by black American musicians—Harlan jumps at the opportunity, convincing Lizard to join him.

Jacaranda

But after the City of Light falls under Nazi occupation, Harlan and Lizard are thrown into Buchenwald—the notorious concentration camp in Weimar, Germany—irreparably changing the course of Harlan’s life. Based on exhaustive research and told in McFadden’s mesmeric prose, The Book of Harlan skillfully blends the stories of McFadden’s familial ancestors with those of real and imagined characters. BERNICE L. MCFADDEN is the author of nine critically acclaimed novels including Sugar, The Warmest December, Gathering of Waters (a New York Times Editors’ Choice and one of the 100 Notable Books of 2012), Glorious, which was featured in O, The Oprah Magazine and was a finalist for the NAACP Image Award. She is a three-time Hurston/Wright Legacy Award finalist, as well as the recipient of three awards from the BCALA (The Black Caucus of the American Library Association). McFadden lives in Brooklyn, New York.

SPEAK GIGANTULAR IRENOSEN OKOJIE

ISBN: 978-1-909762-29-9 eISBN: 978-1-909762-30-5 SEPTEMBER 2016 Price: £8.99 Fiction, Short stories Binding: B-format paperback Extent: 224 pp Rights: World excl. Nigeria & Kenya

For fans of Helen Oyeyemi and Jeannette Winterson A startling debut short story collection from one of Britain’s rising literary stars. These stories are captivating, erotic, enigmatic and disturbing. Irenosen Okojie’s gift is in her understated humour, her light touch, her razor-sharp assessment of the best and worst of humankind, and her unflinching gaze into the darkest corners of the human experience. In these stories Okojie creates worlds where lovelorn aliens abduct innocent coffee shop waitresses, where the London Underground is inhabited by the ghosts of errant citizens caught between here and the hereafter, where insensitive men cheat on their mistresses and can only muster enough interest to fall for one-dimensional poster girls and where brave young women attempt to be erotically empowered at their own peril.

IRENOSEN OKOJIE is a Nigerian-British writer, curator and Arts Project Manager. Her writing has been featured in The Guardian and The Observer, and her short stories have been published internationally. She has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Southbank Centre, and the Caine Prize and was Writer in Residence for TEDx East End. In 2014, she was the Prize Advocate for the SI Leeds Literary Prize and in 2015 THE EVENING STANDARD named her as one of the top debut novelists of the summer with for her novel Butterfly Fish (see p.12). She is a mentor for the Pen to Print project supported by publisher Constable & Robinson and lives in East London.

Sexy, serious and at times downright disturbing, this brilliant debut collection sizzles with originality.

THE ELEPHANT AND THE BEE JESS DE BOER

ISBN: 978-1-909762-24-4 eISBN: 978-1-909762-25-1 APRIL 2016 Non-fiction, Memoir Binding: Soft cover, 208 x 150 mm Extent: 288 pp Price: £12.99 Rights: World English, excl. India

Driven by a childhood urge to “Save the World”, young, naive Kenyan, Jess de Boer leaves her pampered and privileged home in Nairobi and heads out following no set direction or calling. She ricochets from one experience to the next, sometimes hilarious, others jarring and emotional, until a sequence of events takes her back to Africa and, serendipitously, into the glorious world of beekeeping.

JESS DE BOER was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya to a privileged Dutch family in the region. From a young age, inspired by her surroundings, Jess had a strong desire to bring about a positive change in the world. On graduating from University, Jess worked in a variety of industries, from private cheffing in the Swiss Alps to maggot farming in Thailand, travelling the world and documenting her many attempts to make a positive change.

The Elephant and the Bee charts the travels of a modern day explorer and visionary who tackles the enormous challenges of aid in Africa, environmental concerns and conservation issues, with all the internet-derived hubris of today’s youth. It is at once a hurricane of energy and a sobering compendium with hard fought lessons and guidance for anyone who believes in their ability to stand up, shout out and make a difference. When Oprah says, “Be all you can be” and “Live your best life”, Jess believes the former and is dedicated to the latter.

In 2014 Jess won The Africa book Club Short Reads competition with her story The Honey Man. She now works as a beekeeper in Kenya and is still on a mission to one day save the world. The Elephant and the Bee is her first book.

“Blade Runner in Africa with a John Coltrane soundtrack.” Mark Haber, Brazos Bookstore (Houston, TX) In an African city in secession land tourists of all languages and nationalities have only one desire: to make a fortune by exploiting the mineral and human wealth of the country. As soon as night falls, they go out to get drunk, dance, eat and abandon themselves in Tram 83, the only night-club of the city, the den of all the iniquities. Lucien, an aspiring writer, fleeing the exactions and the censorship, finds refuge in the city thanks to Requiem, a friend. Requiem lives mainly by theft and swindle, while Lucien only thinks of writing and living honestly. Around them gravitate gangsters and young girls, retired or runaway men, profit-seeking tourists and federal agents of a nonexistent State. Tram 83 plunges the reader into the atmosphere of a gold rush as cynical as it is comic and

colourfully exotic. It is an observation of human relationships in a world that has become a global village, an African-rhapsody novel hammered by rhythms of jazz. FISTON MWANZA MUJILA was born in 1981 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, where he went to a catholic school before studying Literature and Human Sciences at Lubumbashi University. He now lives in Graz, Austria and is pursuing a PHD in Romance Languages.
