New Titles 2016
Jacaranda Books Art Music Ltd is a fresh and exciting new independent publishing house based in London. We publish adult fiction and nonfiction, including illustrated books, across linguistic, racial, gender and cultural boundaries – books in many ways as cosmopolitan as our city. Through our publishing, we directly address the ongoing lack of diversity in the industry today, and seek to enrich the landscape from boardroom to bookshelf. We aim to bring authors and books that represent the cultural, heritage and ethnic variety that can be found in London, with a particular interest in works related to Africa, the Caribbean, and African America. At the heart of our publishing strategy is one core element: a love of outstanding, thought-provoking work. We believe that a wealth of unheard, under-represented voices exist globally and are ready to be discovered. It is our mission to create the space for those voices to be seen and heard by new readers. Valerie Brandes Founder and Publisher

THE ELEPHANT AND THE BEE JESS DE BOER
ISBN: 978-1-909762-24-4 eISBN: 978-1-909762-25-1 APRIL 2016 Non-fiction, Memoir Binding: Soft cover, 208 x 150 mm Extent: 288 pp Price: £12.99
Jess de Boer On Saving The World... and other triumphant failures
Driven by a childhood urge to “Save the World”, young, naive Kenyan, Jess de Boer leaves her pampered and privileged home in Nairobi and heads out following no set direction or calling. She ricochets from one experience to the next, sometimes hilarious, others jarring and emotional, until a sequence of events takes her back to Africa and, serendipitously, into the glorious world of beekeeping.
JESS DE BOER was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya to a privileged Dutch family in the region. From a young age, inspired by her surroundings, Jess had a strong desire to bring about a positive change in the world. On graduating from University, Jess worked in a variety of industries, from private cheffing in the Swiss Alps to maggot farming in Thailand, travelling the world and documenting her many attempts to make a positive change.
The Elephant and the Bee charts the travels of a modern day explorer and visionary who tackles the enormous challenges of aid in Africa, environmental concerns and conservation issues, with all the internet-derived hubris of today’s youth. It is at once a hurricane of energy and a sobering compendium with hard fought lessons and guidance for anyone who believes in their ability to stand up, shout out and make a difference. When Oprah says, “Be all you can be” and “Live your best life”, Jess believes the former and is dedicated to the latter.
In 2014 Jess won The Africa book Club Short Reads competition with her story The Honey Man. She now works as a beekeeper in Kenya and is still on a mission to one day save the world. The Elephant and the Bee is her first book.

“ This is it,” I whispered to myself grinning broadly as one particularly succulent looking maggot dropped off the fish into its springy bed of bran below.
“ It’s not my fault -I’m still so young… where would I start? And besides, how does one get paid to save the world?
“Wait. Stop. Where did they go? What’s happening to the bees? How can we let this happen?”

“A graceful, perceptive rendering of a misunderstood condition.” Kirkus Reviews Emily’s story begins on St. Stephen’s Day, 2010, in St. John’s, Newfoundland when she gives birth to a baby girl named Sadie Jane with a shock of snowwhite hair. Within 3 months Sadie is diagnosed with albinism, a rare genetic disorder where pigment fails to form in the skin, hair and eyes, and with the accompanying challenges of photophobia and partial blindness. Emily is drawn to understanding her child’s differences through her specialism of folklore and researches the cultural beliefs associated with albinism worldwide; a journey that takes her to a faraway continent, through her own family tree, and all the while unearthing discoveries that vacillate between beauty, amazement and horror.

For fans of Helen Oyeyemi and Jeannette Winterson A startling debut short story collection from one of Britain’s rising literary stars. These stories are captivating, erotic, enigmatic and disturbing. Irenosen Okojie’s gift is in her understated humour, her light touch, her razor-sharp assessment of the best and worst of humankind, and her unflinching gaze into the darkest corners of the human experience. In these stories Okojie creates worlds where lovelorn aliens abduct innocent coffee shop waitresses, where the London Underground is inhabited by the ghosts of errant citizens caught between here and the hereafter, where insensitive men cheat on their mistresses and can only muster enough interest to fall for one-dimensional poster girls and where brave young women attempt to be erotically empowered at their own peril.
IRENOSEN OKOJIE is a Nigerian-British writer, curator and Arts Project Manager. Her writing has been featured in The Guardian and The Observer, and her short stories have been published internationally. She has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Southbank Centre, and the Caine Prize and was Writer in Residence for TEDx East End. In 2014, she was the Prize Advocate for the SI Leeds Literary Prize and in 2015 The Evening Standard named her as one of the top debut novelists of the summer with for her novel Butterfly Fish. “Blade Runner in Africa with a John Coltrane soundtrack.” Mark Haber, Brazos Bookstore (Houston, TX) In an African city in secession land tourists of all languages and nationalities have only one desire: to make a fortune by exploiting the mineral and human wealth of the country. As soon as night falls, they go out to get drunk, dance, eat and abandon themselves in Tram 83, the only night-club of the city, the den of all the iniquities. Lucien, an aspiring writer, fleeing the exactions and the censorship, finds refuge in the city thanks to Requiem, a friend. Requiem lives mainly by theft and swindle, while Lucien only thinks of writing and living honestly. Around them gravitate gangsters and young girls, retired or runaway men, profit-seeking tourists and federal agents of a nonexistent State. Tram 83 plunges the reader into the atmosphere of a gold rush as cynical as it is comic and

colourfully exotic. It is an observation of human relationships in a world that has become a global village, an African-rhapsody novel hammered by rhythms of jazz. FISTON MWANZA MUJILA was born in 1981 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, where he went to a catholic school before studying Literature and Human Sciences at Lubumbashi University. He now lives in Graz, Austria and is pursuing a PHD in Romance Languages. “ Acclaimed newcomer Fiston Mwanza Mujila has dazzled the literary world with his debut novel, a riotous look at the underbelly of life rarely featured in sub-saharan African literature.” The Guardian
“Mujila succeeds in exploring themes of globalization and exploitation in a kinetic, engaging work.” Publishers Weekly
“ One of the more exciting discoveries of the fall . . . Frenetic, flamboyant, and intense, there are touches of Hieronymus Bosch. An insolent, globe-trotting Bosch, who would have read Gabriel García Márquez and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.” Le Monde
“ Tram 83 isn’t for the faint of heart, but rather, it’s for those that have a sense of humor, an interest in seedy underbellies, and a willingness to, at times, feel a little lost in the haze of biblical imagery, flippant debauchery, free sex, and anarchy.” Josh Cook, Foreword Reviews
“ A high-velocity debut . . . The writing has the pulsing, staccato rhythms of Beat poetry and Roland Glasser has exuberantly harnessed that energy in his translation from the French.” Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal
