Restoring America’s

Future

To Our Valued Investors and Friends: In the 70 years since Junior Achievement of Chicago was founded in 1940, a lot has changed in our economy and with the pursuit of the “American Dream,” but the need for JA’s financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship programs has only grown stronger. The recent economic uncertainties have revealed that maintaining a strong economy and healthy free market system for our children has never been more important. The 2009-2010 school year was a truly historic one for JA of Chicago, not only for reaching our 70 year milestone, but more importantly for our record-breaking student outreach and student impact results during these challenging economic times. With your continued investments and support, JA of Chicago grew student outreach to bring the total number of students served to 393,343 throughout our twelve county franchise area, a 3 percent increase over the prior year. It is an incredible testament to the Chicago

Mr. Lubin graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with honors and in 1957, from Harvard Law. A few days later, he joined Sonnenschein, at that time a firm of 30 lawyers. He has practiced with Sonnenschein continuously since then, a span of 53 years, and served in management of the firm for more than 30 years, including as Chairman from 1991 to 1996. Today, SNR Denton has over 1,400 lawyers in 30 offices around the world.

responsibility for overall management of the partnership.

Soon after joining Sonnenschein, Mr. Lubin began doing legal work for a small hamburger chain, McDonald’s, and its founder, Ray A. Kroc. In 1967, Mr. Lubin was elected to the Board of McDonald’s. Mr. Lubin continued to serve on the McDonald’s Board until 2007, a period of 40 years, during which time McDonald’s grew to be the largest food service business in the world. Mr. Lubin is a founder of McDonald’s charitable arm, Ronald McDonald House Charities. RMHC provides support and resources to families through 300 Ronald McDonald Houses near children’s hospitals, at 150 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and 40 Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles in 52 countries and regions around the world. Mr. Lubin serves as Vice President and Director of RMHC, positions he has held since its founding in 1984. Mr. Lubin takes an interest in educational matters, having served on the Board of Overseers of the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Science and the Boards of the Smithsonian Institute and the National Museum of American History. He was formerly Chair of the Renaissance Schools Fund, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of education in Chicago through the development of charter schools. Mr. Lubin takes particular pride in Legacy Charter School, an elementary school in North Lawndale, which was established by Sonnenschein, as part of its 100th anniversary celebration. Mr. Lubin is the Chairman of Chicago Metropolis 2020, Vice Chairman of Rush University Medical Center, and a member of the Commercial Club of Chicago and its Civic Committee, where he is a member of the Steering Committee as well as its Education Committee and its State Tax Task Force. Mr. Lubin serves on the Boards of Molex Incorporated, the Chas. Levy Company, Shaklee Global Group and Daubert Industries.

The Gidwitz family name is not new to the Junior Achievement of Chicago Business Hall of Fame. Mr. Gidwitz’s father, Gerald, was inducted in 1992. Mr. Gidwitz Sr. was a founder of Helene Curtis, (a Fortune 500 consumer products company) a growth leader at its time in the personal care industry. Mr. Gidwitz Sr. provided guidance and leadership for his five children. He provided a good foundation for Ron Gidwitz to assume the title of president and CEO at Helene Curtis. Mr. Gidwitz graduated from Brown University in 1967, with a bachelor’s degree in economics. After graduation, Mr. Gidwitz was Assistant to the Vice President at Walter E. Heller & Co., a former national financial services company headquartered in Chicago. Mr. Gidwitz served as President and Chief Executive Officer and as a member of the Board of Directors of Helene Curtis. Before being appointed President, Mr. Gidwitz held a number of positions within the company, with responsibilities ranging from sales to manufacturing. After Mr. Gidwitz took the helm of Helene Curtis in 1979, revenues increased sevenfold to more than $1.2 billion before its acquisition by Unilever in 1996. He had served as President since 1979 and assumed the post of Chief Executive Officer in July 1985. When Helene Curtis was acquired by Unilever, Mr. Gidwitz remained president and CEO of Helene Curtis in the immediate aftermath of the acquisition. In 1998, Mr. Gidwitz retired from Helene Curtis to focus more on his venture capital company, GCG Partners. Mr. Gidwitz also serves as Director on the Board of Continental Materials Corporation and KapStone Paper and Packaging Corporation. Mr. Gidwitz is active in the Chicago business and arts communities. He was named Crain’s Chicago Business Executive of the Year in 1988. He has served as Chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education. He is a member of the Board of Trustees/Directors for the Field Museum, Rush University Medical Center, the Museum of Science and Industry, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. He also serves as Governor of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Additionally, he has served as Chairman of the following organizations: The Economic Development Commission of the City of Chicago, the Board of Trustees of the City Colleges of Chicago, the Chicago Central Area Committee and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce. In 2006, Mr. Gidwitz was a candidate for Governor of the State of Illinois. Mr. Gidwitz is currently the General Chairman of the Brady/Plummer for Illinois campaign as well as Chairman of the New Prosperity Foundation, an independent expenditure organization. He is also President and Founder of Students First Illinois, a non-partisan statewide coalition of private individuals and community organizations working to improve education for Illinois’ 2.2 million children. As another unique feature of JA’s programming, both the elementary school students and the cadets reap rewards from the experience. JROTC cadets gain valuable skills through this initiative that bolster their own training goals and development as leaders.

This gift from the McCormick Foundation will be instrumental in expanding JA’s “High School Heroes” initiative, through which local JROTC high school cadets not only receive JA classroom programs, but also serve as powerful role models, volunteering with elementary school students and teaching JA programs that will help them prepare for the future.

Director of Military Instruction for JROTC Kim Harrell explained, “JROTC aims to prepare our youth to enter the global economy with valuable leadership skills, discipline, and strong mentorship to encourage them to continue their post-secondary academic careers and pursue a flourishing professional career upon graduation. JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF CHICAGO 2010 ANNUAL REPORT

33

Franchise Area Junior Achievement of Chicago has been providing quality economic education programs for 70 years. Since its charter in 1940, Junior Achievement of Chicago has promoted economic education and the free enterprise system to over four million students in the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Over 150,000 business and community volunteers have helped bring Junior Achievement’s economic education programs to students from elementary school through high school.

The entire franchise area of Junior Achievement of Chicago includes ten counties in Northern Illinois and two in Northwest Indiana (see illustration).

The national organization, founded in 1919 by Horace A. Moses, chairman of the Strathmore Paper Company, merged with Junior Achievement International on July 1, 2004, to form JA Worldwide. Headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, JA Worldwide reaches more than nine million students in over 100 countries around the world. Junior Achievement of Chicago

Junior Achievement gratefully acknowledges the generosity of SeaHaus Studio, LLC (www.seahausstudio.com) for donating design and production services for the 2010 Annual Report.
