To Our Valued Investors and Friends Since Chicago’s early days, the city has been a platform for creativity and innovation. Chicagoland can claim a long list of ground-breaking accomplishments, including the world’s first skyscraper, ferris wheel, vacuum cleaner, electric dishwasher and even the first open-heart surgery. It is with these great innovations in mind that Junior Achievement of Chicago is dedicated to bringing entrepreneurial thought to young people throughout our city. Through Junior Achievement programs, we provide the building blocks essential for today’s youth to become the next generation of innovators and leaders in our community. Last year alone, our outreach grew by 5% to reach 411,912 students in our 12-county franchise area! Beyond sheer program growth, feedback received from educator focus groups reinforces that JA programs are truly making a difference in the lives of Chicago youth. Educators throughout both the city and suburbs confirmed that by collaborating with dedicated business partners and committed volunteers, our comprehensive curriculum gives students the blueprint on how they can be successful, helping them turn their dreams into reality. And as technology continues to improve, we have enhanced our curriculum to break down barriers in the classroom, opening students’ eyes to the world around them. This year we used Skype to connect students across the world through our “Global Connections” program, allowing them to share experiences and perspectives with peers across the world. In addition to video chatting, we are using game-based learning as a way to engage students while teaching them fundamental concepts of economics and personal finance. The recently launched JA Finance Park Virtual (http://jafinancepark.ja.org/) allows students to participate in an online budgeting simulation, where they are faced with decisions pertaining to a myriad of personal financial choices. For more details on these innovative programs and to learn how you or your organization can make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people, visit us online at www.jachicago.org or connect with JA of Chicago via social media. So as we celebrate another successful year and look to the future, we want to sincerely thank you for all the support, time, and dedication to improving the lives of local students. We cannot wait for the amazing opportunities that lie ahead as we work together to empower hundreds of thousands of Chicago area youth!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAMS Engaging, age appropriate, and fun Junior Achievement elementary school programs include grade-specific lesson themes for kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Elementary school programs teach students the basic concepts of business and economics and show children how education is relevant to the workplace. The program themes teach young students that people assume roles as individuals, consumers, and workers that extends from the self and family to the world around them. These sequential activities build on studies from each preceding grade and prepare students for secondary school and lifelong learning.
WHAT JA STUDENTS WILL TELL YOU 92% of JA alumni say being a JA student positively affected their future.

How Students ConnectED
JA Global Connections Program Connecting Middle School students across the world
In 2011, JA brought together a 6th grade classroom in Mexico and a 7th grade classroom in Illinois for an interactive classroom experience.
With the mission of educating and inspiring young people to succeed in the global economy, the JA “Global Connections Program” innovates upon the proven methodology of JA programs to provide a global experience to students within the boundaries of their own classroom. In so doing, the program broadens students’ perspective by enabling them to interact with other student peers across borders. By enhancing an already established program, JA Global Marketplace (which provides practical information about the global economy and its
This is how it worked:
impact on students’ lives), “Global Connections” brings traditional curriculum to life through the use of online video chatting such as Skype. With these video conference methods, the program collectively joins two individual classrooms of students in different nations.
1
Students asked curriculum-based questions and learned about each other’s homelands and cultures over videoconference sessions
2
With videoconferencing turned off, students learned lessons with the guidance of a JA volunteer
3
Students were introduced to business and international marketing principles from the JA Global Marketplace curriculum and developed a consumer product
4
Upon completion of these lessons, both classrooms met again via videoconference, sharing their developed products and marketing them to each other
By providing face-to-face conversation and a shared learning experience between classrooms across the globe, students can learn from each other while sharing perspectives and reflecting upon the same lesson questions and curriculum.

HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS Connecting education to the world of work Through the variety and depth of our high school programs, students gain a practical and realistic perspective of handling their finances, understanding the economy, and managing educational and career choices. JA high school students experience interactive programs where they practice concepts hands-on, such as forming mini-companies or competing with one another in a computerized economy. Through these activities, concepts of supply and demand are easier to comprehend when students visualize firsthand how the economy works. We provide all the course materials, which are given to hundreds of classrooms for teachers, volunteers, and students to use.

Whole School PartnershipS A Whole School Partnership is unique because companies can “adopt” an entire school in the community where they do business. Every student at a chosen school benefits from JA’s programs, while company employees have the opportunity to develop a personal relationship with students and teachers. JA works directly with companies to determine a partnership school. Volunteering is optional, but many companies encourage employees to take advantage of the rewarding JA volunteer experience. The Whole School Partners listed in the following pages made significant financial and volunteer contributions during the 2010-2011 school year, enabling JA to provide an entire school of students with the tools they need to build their dreams.
Since 1993, research has shown that even a single exposure to JA makes a difference
Requirements for Whole School Partnership 1
A financial investment to cover all program materials, training, supplies, staffing and evaluation needed to carry out the programs.
2
A commitment to provide volunteers to teach the JA curriculum in every classroom.
3
The appointment of a liaison to work with JA staff representatives to coordinate the activities between your organization and the schools.
Students who participate in JA have a greater comprehension of economic concepts and skills than their non-participating peers. Among their other findings, research from the Worldwide Institute for Research & Evaluation has confirmed that JA:
• Encourages students to become entrepreneurs • Helps students understand the importance of staying in school and improves attendance • Increases student understanding of economic and business concepts compared to classroom peers

Our EventS Junior Achievement of Chicago hosts several signature events throughout the year to raise money to support our programs, as well as to engage the community in our educational work. We offer many ways for the community to support JA outside the classroom, both on an individual level or through event sponsorship.
27 th ANNUAL BOWL-A-THon The JA Bowl-a-Thon is our biggest fundraiser, thanks to the efforts of 5,000 business professionals who represent nearly 40 Chicago companies. This year, we raised over $1.24 million to support educational programs. The Bowl-a-Thon consists of employees from local companies, along with their family and friends, who form a team of five bowlers to raise funds to benefit Junior Achievement programs. Bowlers walked away with

Chicago Business Hall of Fame Recognizing Chicago’s most distinguished business leaders The Chicago Business Hall of Fame helps us recognize the outstanding contributions of Chicago area business leaders, while inspiring generations of professionals and entrepreneurs. Chosen honorees are known for their leadership in free enterprise, success in business, and community involvement.
HIGHLIGHTS • Past recipients include entrepreneurs, CEOs, and presidents of both public and private companies who have achieved extraordinary successes and continue to shape Chicago as a innovative city in which to conduct business. • Laureates and their families are honored at a program and reception, where local Junior Achievement students share the inspiring story of these Laureates and present the awards.
Nomination Procedure
1
Business people from large and small “for-profit” businesses and corporations are eligible
2
The emphasis is on long-standing and contemporary accomplishment
3
If the honoree is currently holding the position in which they achieved major success, he/she must be at the zenith in his/her career
4
The nominee must have performed active community service in the Chicago area
5
Laureates are then selected by a Blue Ribbon Panel consisting of former Laureates and members of the Executive Committee of JA’s Board of Directors
• More than 400 of Chicagoland’s most distinguished business leaders attend this exclusive event, which attracts many of the past recipients of the award and their industry colleagues. • A crystal flame symbolizing the spirit of free enterprise is awarded to each laureate. • The stories and accomplishments of our Laureates are featured in a permanent exhibit site at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Franchise Area Since its charter in 1940, Junior Achievement of Chicago has promoted economic education and the free enterprise system to over four million students in the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Over 150,000 business and community volunteers have helped bring Junior Achievement’s economic education programs to students from elementary school through high school. The entire franchise area of Junior Achievement of Chicago includes ten counties in Northern Illinois and two in Northwest Indiana (see illustration). The national organization was founded in 1919 by Horace A. Moses, chairman of the Strathmore Paper Company. Today, Junior Achievement USA reaches four million students per year in 173,000 classrooms and after-school locations. JA programs are taught by volunteers in inner cities, suburbs, and rural areas throughout the USA, in 124 Area Offices in all 50 states. Junior Achievement of Chicago gratefully acknowledges the generosity of SeaHaus Studio, LLC (www.seahausstudio.com) for donating design and production services for the 2011 Annual Report.
