Valued Friends & Investors THROUGH OUR PROVEN PROGRAMS, community partnerships, and the dedication of our volunteers, we are creating a better academic experience for our students to help them reach their full potential. Each year, students from kindergarten through high school enjoy Junior Achievement’s hands-on, engaging programs that challenge them to consider the importance of their education, individual interests, and life skills relating to financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness. More than 18 million U.S. adults between the ages of 18 and 64 have not graduated from high school and therefore do not qualify for most of the jobs in the current and future economy. JA is well-positioned to prepare students with the skills they need

Our Programs This year, over 13,600 volunteers made a difference in the lives of students and what they can expect in the world of work. Our volunteers serve as positive corporate and community role models to students by sharing their professional and life experiences while teaching JA’s proven, hands-on programs. Our programs help students see the connection between what they learn in school and the working world – enhancing the relevance of their classroom learning and increasing their understanding of the value of staying in school. Our programs, developed and tested by Junior Achievement USA, are packaged in complete, self-contained kits that include detailed lesson plans and supplemental materials for volunteers to effectively deliver lessons.

Volunteers

Junior Achievement high school programs give students a practical perspective on handling their finances, understanding the economy, and managing their future educational and career choices. Students participate in hands-on interactive programs where they practice important business concepts, such as forming companies or competing with each other in a computerized economy. We provide all the course materials, which are given at no cost to thousands of classrooms for teachers, volunteers, and students to use.

JA YOU’RE HIRED! Students gain an inside look into the workforce, networking, and the interviewing process PRESENTING SPONSOR

High school students had the opportunity to practice professional development skills through competitive challenge workshops while participating in the “JA You’re Hired!” program. Local business professionals from more than 50 Chicago companies (including those from the financial, education, technology, retail, and business sectors)

helped students develop and practice their networking skills. Students selected various workshop topics during the day ranging from interviewing skills, business etiquette, product development, ethical decision making, budgeting, how to use social media, and leadership. At the end of the day, student challenge winners were awarded gift cards sponsored by Discover Financial Services. Participating high schools and organizations included: Barrington High School (Barrington), Michele Clark High School (Chicago), Economic Awareness Council (Evanston), Fenwick High School (Oak Park), Kankakee Area Career Center (Bourbonnais), Lemont High School (Lemont), Manteno High School (Manteno), Niles North High School (Skokie), Carl Sandburg High School (Orland Park), Schurz High School (Chicago), Teen Parent Services (Chicago), and VOISE High School (Chicago).

The JA Company Program JA flagship program continues to inspire students Each year, JA of Chicago awards high school students who participated and competed in the flagship JA Company program, which challenges high school students to take on “officer” roles while running their own company. This year’s winner was “Hometown Classics” from Barrington High School, a company that sells nostalgic postcards of Barrington, sponsored by PepsiCo. Separately, 15 teams of JA Company Program students from across the country competed in Washington D.C. for the title of JA Company of the Year. Two Chicago area teams, one from the Kankakee Area Career Center and the other from Manteno High School, competed in this year’s national championship!

PepsiCo presents the 2013 Company of the Year award to “Hometown Classics” from Barrington High School.

2013 Scholarship Awards Providing over $110,000 to exceptional students Each year, JA gives thousands of dollars in scholarships and awards to exceptional students who have participated in JA programs. This year, we awarded more than $110,000 in scholarships and awards to 23 outstanding high school students. The top award, the Colonel Henry Crown Scholarship, provides $20,000 over the course of four years at an accredited college and includes a paid summer internship at a Henry Crown affiliated company.

WHOLE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP A Whole School Partnership is unique because companies can adopt an entire school in the neighborhood where they do business. Every student at a chosen school benefits from JA’s programs, while company employees have the opportunity to develop a special bond with the community they serve. The Whole School Partners listed in the following pages made significant financial and volunteer contributions during the 2012-2013 school year, enabling JA to provide an entire school of students with the tools they need to build their dreams.

JROTC STUDENT SPOTLIGHT If I had not been a Junior Achievement volunteer, I would have missed out on a very enjoyable experience.

There’s nothing like lighting up younger students’ faces when you (also a student) walk into a room and say, “I

am your teacher today.” — Aaron, JROTC student from Roberto Clemente Community Academy

McCormick Foundation Impact JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF CHICAGO WAS AWARDED $250,000 OVER A TWO YEAR PERIOD, to expand our JROTC special initiative to reach over 235 classrooms

In 2012, this initiative reached a total

of

416 classrooms, impacting

in both 2012 and 2013. JROTC military schools and

10,750 elementary school

academies provide high school cadets to serve as

students. This level of outreach far

JA classroom volunteers and role models to elementary school students in at-risk communities in Chicago JROTC scholarship winners at Junior Achievement’s May 2013 Board meeting.

Outreach

and Joliet.

exceeded the plan of impacting 235 classrooms and 5,000 students.

JROTC HIGH SCHOOL CADETS who participate as classroom volunteers are able to practice the leadership, citizenship, character, and life-enhancing skills they learn as part of their regular JROTC activities, while also making our programs more valuable as returning volunteers. Cadets were invited to submit an essay about their JA experience as returning classroom volunteers in the spring of 2013 and were eligible to

win one of ten $1,000 scholarships.

Taco Bell Foundation for Teens Impact Outreach

THE FOUNDATION’S CONTRIBUTION supports real-world experiential programs that help teens stay in school and graduate. The generous donation aligns with Taco Bell’s commitment to addressing the high school dropout issue in the U.S. by providing at-risk youth with mentors and real-world experiences that will motivate them to stay in school and graduate.

For the 2012-2013 school year, as part of Taco Bell’s $104,000 commitment, JA provided programs to 12,772 teens in 619 classrooms in target schools identified by their proximity

to Taco Bell restaurants. For the 2011-2012 school year, the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens helped JA reach 21 approved high schools (11,989 students in 533 classrooms). For the past two years, the following partner companies provided volunteers in support of Taco Bell’s outreach: The John Morrell Food Group, Smithfield Foods, and Saratoga Food Specialties.

“We feel it’s our company’s responsibility to strengthen the communities where we operate, and this often begins with education. Our partnership with Junior Achievement and the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens is the perfect way for us to help create promising opportunities for our young people in the Chicagoland area by improving access to quality education.” —Dennis H. Treacy, Smithfield Foods’ Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer For more information visit Tacobellforteens.org and find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TacoBellforTeens.
