The objectives of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. are to “create a medium of contact for children which will stimulate growth and development and provide children with constructive educational, cultural, civic, health, recreational and social programs. Since 1938, these objectives have been at the forefront of the development of children, particularly in the African-American community. Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2 to 19, dedicated to nurturing future leaders by supporting children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty.

NATIONAL HISTORY Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was founded January 24, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Marion Stubbs Thomas. In 1946, the National Organization was incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware. Since that meeting in 1938, chapters have been organized across the entire United States and as of December 1998, there are 199 chapters in 35 states and the District of Columbia. In 1966, the organization created its own foundation, The Jack and Jill of America Foundation, which was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois, January 1968. The Foundation has been responsible for the origin and funding of a large number of educational and charitable projects benefitting the young. Aside from the Foundation, the chapters are responsible for assisting and promoting local charities and programs. Through the years, Jack and Jill of America, Inc. has made large contributions to other organizations and projects, namely: the Hungry of Ethiopia through Africare, The United Negro College Fund, PUSH, The Martin Luther King Center for Social Change, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Mental Health for Children, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, Research for Rheumatic Fever and many others. Today, Jack and Jill of America, Inc. has a membership base of over 9,500 families and it is the oldest and largest African American family organization in the United States. Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is committed to ensuring that all children have the same opportunities in life. For more information, visit the Jack and Jill National website: www.jackandjillofamerica.org ANN ARBOR CHAPTER HISTORY The Ann Arbor Chapter of Jack and Jill was founded in 1978 after an interest group of 28 members was formed by two local mothers, Barbara Robinson and Lola Jones. The mission of Jack and Jill was appealing to this group of mothers who, like many of us today, struggled to find opportunities for their children that emphasized the importance of their heritage, encouraged community service and allowed like-minded mothers to interact with and serve as a network of support for each other. From the very beginning, the children of the Ann Arbor Chapter enjoyed the activities sponsored by the chapter members and the life-long friendships that were created. Over the last 37 years, the scope of chapter activities has grown tremendously, but the original mission of the National organization remains the same. The Chapter’s signature fund-raising event, the Beau-Debutante Ball, began in 1979 and has become one of the most highly anticipated events of the year. Tonight, we celebrate our 37th annual ball and take pride in presenting this impressive court of area seniors to our community. The Ann Arbor chapter has always had a strong community service presence, which started with the chapter’s inception. Service to others is a core pillar of all the chapters of the National organization and a life-long commitment we hope to instill in even our youngest members. Support of local and national non-profit organizations include: SOS Crisis Center, Ozone House, Ann Arbor Community Center, Safe House, Gleaner’s Empty Bowls Project, the Salvation Army (food pantries, Bell Ringers, Staples Family Center), Aeropostale national “Teens for Jeans” drive to clothe homeless youth, March of Dimes and many other education/health/welfare initiatives. The Ann Arbor Chapter has a rich history of service to the community and we will continue our legacy of servant leadership. This year’s theme, “We Dream A World”, is so appropriate as we read the headlines and the stories they portray about our Teens. It is a constant reminder that we need to remain vigilant and continue to support programs like this event that positivley influence our Teens. I am hopeful that this experience encourages them to rewrite the headlines and dare to be different, bold, and great!

On behalf of the members of the Ann Arbor Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., welcome to the 37th annual Beau-Debutante ball, “We Dream a World”. Hosting this time-honored event for talented high school seniors in our community has been a cherished tradition for our chapter since 1979. Tonight is no exception. This evening, we take tremendous pride in presenting the accomplishments of fourteen Beaux and Debutantes who are graduating this year and going forward with anticipation and purpose to create the next chapters of achievements and recognition. These young people have worked very hard to prepare for tonight’s celebration. I know they appreciate you being in the audience to remind them that you have been, and will always be, proud of who they are and what they are destined to become through perseverance and faith. Importantly, we appreciate your support this evening and throughout the year, to enable our Chapter’s efforts to contribute to worthy initiatives that benefit the lives of children in our community. To the members of the Ann Arbor Chapter: Thank you for your support and tireless efforts to make this evening unforgettable for our seniors, their families and the community. I especially wish to thank our Ball Chair, Dr. Dorian Moore and our Chapter mothers, who have guided the creation of every beautiful detail and the exceptional programming elements you will experience at the ball. And the Ann Arbor Chapter sincerely appreciates the behind-the-scenes support we receive every year from our Ann Arbor Jack and Jill Associates. To our Jack and Jill National and Regional guests: Thank you for taking time from your busy schedules to celebrate with us this evening. To the families of the Beaux and Debutantes: Thank you for sharing your children with us. It has been our pleasure to help them prepare for this evening and to get to know them on a personal level. They are very thoughtful, responsible, engaging and bright young adults. You should be very proud. To the stars of the evening, our Beaux and Debutantes: We are so proud of you and appreciate your commitment to be a participant in the ball. The net proceeds you raised through ad and ticket sales will continue to benefit the Jack and Jill Foundation, as well as local Ann Arbor children’s charities. It is our sincere hope that the lessons you have learned from this experience will benefit your journey into adulthood. Enjoy the love, joy, memories and blessings that surround you this evening!

I DREAM A WORLD I dream a world where man No other man will scorn, Where love will bless the earth And peace its paths adorn I dream a world where all Will know sweet freedom's way, Where greed no longer saps the soul Nor avarice blights our day. A world I dream where black or white, Whatever race you be, Will share the bounties of the earth And every man is free, Where wretchedness will hang its head And joy, like a pearl, Attends the needs of all mankindOf such I dream, my world! TO MY INCREDIBLE DAUGHTER

Sydney Elizabeth Padgett

TO MY INCREDIBLE DAUGHTER

Sydney Elizabeth Padgett There are no words to adequately express the absolute joy of being your mother. From the moment you were born, I knew my life would be changed forever but I never could have imagined the pure happiness that you would bring. You are, quite simply, the most amazing person I have ever known. Not only do I love you to the moon and back but I truly like you and the young woman that you have become. You are smart, loving, kind, principled, compassionate, hilariously funny, loyal and wise and you have brought more joy into my world than I could have ever thought possible. From our long deep conversations to our wild shopping sprees, you have been the best part of every day. And, when life was difficult, I have seen you rise to the occasion time after time, growing stronger with each experience. You bring peace and calm to all of us who love you and you are a blessing to all who know you. I have no doubt that you are headed for a wonderful future for your personality, diligence and heart for others demands it.

Remember, do not ever compromise your character, your faith in God or your commitment to doing the right thing. Never take your hand out of God’s hand and follow wherever He leads. He has a plan for your life that is perfect; trust it. He loves you; trust Him. He will never fail you; count on it. Although it is hard for me to let you go, I have never been more proud because I know you will make the world a better place just by showing up. You are the sunshine of my life. And if I lived a million lifetimes, I would choose you to be my daughter every time. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me and I thank God every day for the privilege of being your mom. Know that wherever life takes you, I am with you. No matter how hard it gets, I will always be your soft place to land and no matter how high you soar, I will be there cheering you on and loving you with everything that I am because you, my beautiful child, are my heaven.

I love you so very much,

Mommy

“……whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure. whatever is lovely, whatever is praiseworthy-think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me or seen in me-put into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. PhiliPPians 4:8-9

Auntie Debbie & Charles

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?

Uncle Randy & Auntie Linda

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Marianne Williamson

Sydney Elizabeth Padgett As we have watched from a distance, we have been in awe of the young woman you have become. Whether it's your well documented intelligence, your kindness towards everyone you come in contact with or your sense of humor that keeps us smiling and puts everyone at ease, you truly shine a wonderful light wherever you go. We are very proud of you and wish you all the best in your future.

We Love You, Uncle Chris, Ginger, William and Jackson

"Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart." - Psalm 37:4

Sydney Padgett Elizabeth

You are our niece, goddaughter, daughter, and granddaughter joined together not by blood, but by heart and love. The Johnsons and Sewells make no distinction — you are ours and we are deeply proud of you. God-willing we will be there in the year 2020 when you walk across the stage at Spelman College. I am so grateful for you, not just because of the joy you bring to my life but for the steadfast, loyal and loving sister you have been to Sydney. From Chicago to L.A. to Atlantis and beyond, we have forged a relationship that I know will only continue to get stronger. From the three of us snuggling up and squealing with laughter to the more difficult conversations that have needed to take place, we have shared so much and have a built a relationship that all of us can count on. DANA CHRISTINE BOYD The road that we travel in life is not always a straight path. It is filled with many twists, turns, obstacles and setbacks. The challenge is not to avoid the obstacles and setbacks, but to face them head on. Embrace the challenges, learn and appreciate the growth that comes from them. Congratulations 2016 Debutante Dana Boyd “May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy” Colossians 1:11 Dana, it has been a pleasure to watch you grow from a toddler a young adult. You are beautiful. Thank you for your positive spirit and your willingness to serve others. I have cherished memories of your infectious laugh invading my salon with every stylist and patron experiencing a bit of ‘Dana’s joy’ after your continuous rounds of heart-felt laughter, leaving not a dry eye in the place. And on another occasion when you accompanied me to the Beau-Deb Ball when you were six years old. You left quite an impression on our tablemates, who wondered who the confident, mature little girl was that was assertive enough to introduce herself and engage them in delightful conversation. We were all surprised at your response, when one woman asked what you did that day and you replied, nonchalantly “Oh, I had a Day of Pampering, with spa services,” and you stuck out your hand to show off your manicure. You were the best date ever! Enjoy your special day today. God bless, Ms. Debra
