JACK AND JILL OF AMERICA, INCORPORATED ANN ARBOR CHAPTER PRESE NT S
THE 38TH ANNUAL BEAU-DEBUTANTE BALL
“SIMPLY MAGIC”
Jack and Jill of America, Inc., is a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2 – 19, dedicated to nurturing future African American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty. The late Marion Stubbs Thomas founded Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, on January 24, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Twenty mothers came together to discuss creating an organization to provide social, cultural and educational opportunities for youth between the ages of 2 and 19. In 1946, 10 chapters were involved in the national restructuring process. The constitution and bylaws were drawn up, and the organization was incorporated under the laws of the state of Delaware. Today, Jack and Jill boasts more than 230 chapters nationwide, representing more than 40,000 family members. Each chapter plans annual programming activities guided under a national theme. Through service projects, Jack and Jill of America creates a medium of contact for children to stimulate their growth and development. “To us as mothers, [Jack and Jill] has become a means of furthering an inherent and natural desire …to bestow upon our children all the opportunities possible for a normal and graceful approach to a beautiful adulthood.” – Marion Stubbs Thomas

Foundation & service In 1966, the organization created its own foundation, The Jack and Jill of America Foundation, which was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois, January 1968. The Foundation has been responsible for the origin and funding of a large number of educational and charitable projects benefitting the young. Aside from the Foundation, the chapters are responsible for assisting and promoting local charities and programs. We began almost 50 years ago, with a group of women, who believed in the power of philanthropy and the ability to have a voice in how contributions were spent. Since inception in 1968, we’ve invested millions of dollars in communities all across America. Today we continue to grow our impact through our vision to transform African American communities, one child at a time. As the philanthropic arm of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Jack and Jill Foundation’s mission is to address issues affecting African American children and families, by investing in programs and services that create a strong foundation for children to thrive longterm. For more information about the foundation, visit www.jackandjillfoundation.org
ANN ARBOR CHAPTER HISTORY The Ann Arbor Chapter of Jack and Jill was founded in 1978 after an interest group of 28 members was formed by two local mothers, Barbara Robinson and Lola Jones. The mission of Jack and Jill was appealing to this group of mothers who, like many of us today, struggled to find opportunities for their children that emphasized the importance of their heritage, encouraged community service and allowed like-minded mothers to interact with and serve as a network of support for each other. From the very beginning, the children of the Ann Arbor Chapter enjoyed the activities sponsored by the chapter members and the life-long friendships that were created. Over the last 37 years, the scope of chapter activities has grown tremendously, but the original mission of the National organization remains the same. The Chapter’s signature fund-raising event, the Beau-Debutante Ball, began in 1979 and has become one of the most highly anticipated events of the year. Tonight, we celebrate our 36th annual ball and take pride in presenting this impressive court of area seniors to our community. The Ann Arbor chapter has always had a strong community service presence, which started with the chapter’s inception. Service to others is a core pillar of all the chapters of the National organization and a life-long commitment we hope to instill in even our youngest members. Along with National directives and initiatives, we will continue to demonstrate the importance and relevance of the Jack and Jill brand in Ann Arbor and within the greater Washtenaw County area by being a viable partner in serving all children, and especially those we hold most dear—the African American children in our community. The Ann Arbor Chapter has a rich history of service to the community and we will continue our legacy of servant leadership.

Welcome to the 38th annual Ann Arbor Jack and Jill Beau and Debutante Ball! This year’s theme, “Simply Magic,” perfectly captures the spirit for this wonderful evening. Thank you for joining us as we honor these exceptional daughters and sons as they progress from teens to tomorrow’s leaders. Tonight, we honor 16 of Washtenaw County’s most talented young leaders, including scholars, activists, performers, athletes and musicians. They have worked tirelessly to prepare for this culminating event to not only celebrate their accomplishments, but to also honor their heroes and sheroes that have supported them in becoming their best authentic selves. We are thrilled at the many possibilities for who these distinguished graduates may become and the contributions to society that they will make today and beyond. The Ann Arbor Chapter of Jack and Jill is delighted to have you as our guests for the evening. Your support of the ball is critical to the success of this time-honored tradition. Because of you we are not only able to honor our youth, but also make contributions to the Jack and Jill Foundation and Girls Group for 2017. We know that supporting the organizations that support our youth is another critical factor in the success of the community. To my fellow Jack and Jill Mothers, “Thank you” is not nearly adequate to express my gratitude for the work that you do to make this event a remarkable event year in and year out. You make amazing look easy! To our ball chairs, Leah Maguire-Schrupp and Stephanie Jones, your leadership is invaluable to the success of this event and the success of the chapter.

Congratulations and Best Wishes to my Lovely Granddaughter
I am so proud of you and your many accomplishments. Now fix firmly in your mind where you would like to go from here, and chart your course straight for that destination. And, as you go forth meeting new challenges, go with out fear. For you have already demonstrated a sense of purpose, maturity and self reliance – essential qualities for realizing a potential for greatness. Remember always... you are a child of God. And with the Lord guiding your thoughts and actions, all things are possible.
