VICE PRESIDENT SECRETARY

Greetings Mighty Mid-Western Region,

I am Carter Minor, your Regional Teen President, hailing from the Columbus Chapter and it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 69th Annual Mid-Western Region Teen Leadership Conference at the Ohio State University! This program year has been fulfilling and required tremendous growth and discipline. We should all be proud. My fellow Regional Teen Officers and I have worked to make this a conference in which every teen finds an element they enjoy. It is my distinct honor to welcome you to this year’s conference.

Through this year’s theme of Reunion: Celebrating our Connection, we will honor the enduring strength of our ancestors while celebrating our successes today. Nothing defeats our enemies like triumph, standing in the knowledge that no weapon formed against us shall prosper and the conviction that no matter how dark the night, “joy comes in the morning.” The hard work of our individual lives and the program year has been completed, so take this time to enjoy all TLC has to offer: from the classic Step and Skit competitions to the new Apparel and Blanket competitions.

I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the amazing mothers who have dedicated their time, energy, and resources toward making this organization a success. Your unwavering commitment to providing a nurturing environment for teens and empowering them to reach their goals does not go unnoticed. Your dedication and sacrifice are invaluable, and we appreciate all that you do for us.

To the teens, thank you for allowing me to serve in this unique role, now it is time to have fun at our conference! There is magic in the kinship of this group, in our bond, our laugh, and our embrace; and we realize our greatest power is when we all get together... in Reunion!

Yours in Service, Carter

Greetings, Mighty Mid-Western Region Teens. Welcome to the 69th Annual Regional Teen Leadership Conference!

My name is Samantha Suggs and I have had the privilege of serving as your Regional Teen Vice President for the 2022-23 program year. I hail from the incredible Indianapolis Chapter, and I am excited to welcome you to Teen Leadership Conference 2023 at the Ohio State University!

One of my goals for this program year was to amplify the voices of the teens and ensure their ideas were represented in the planning process. Throughout this year, I have gathered input from the teens on past regional events and what they would like to see for the future of programming. With this feedback, the Regional Teen Board and I have worked hard to advocate on behalf of the region’s teens for the interactive and engaging Jack and Jill experience they deserve. We hope that you have an unforgettable TLC and take something special away from the exciting, planned activities!

This year’s conference theme is “Reunion: Celebrating our Connection.” I am excited to come together to create powerful spaces where we celebrate our growth, joy, accomplishments, and black excellence as the next generation of African American leaders. Over the next few days, remember to cherish the time we have together to laugh, bond, and embrace one another as we work to further the mission of this wonderful organization!

Thank you so much for joining us for TLC 2023, and I hope this weekend is one you will never forget!

Yours in Service, Samantha

Greetings, Mighty Mid-Western Region. Welcome to the 69th Annual Regional Teen Leadership Conference!

I am Hudson Davis and I hail from the Western Cook County Chapter. I am beyond honored to have served as your Mighty Mid-Western Regional Teen Treasurer for the 2022-2023 program year. I would like to thank each and every one of you for continuously believing in the Regional Teen Officers this program year.

The Regional Teen Officers are grateful for the wonderful Mother Members of the Mid-Western Region. You all work tirelessly to make sure that we grow and mature as young black human beings, as members of the community, and as empathetic leaders. Through the continuous support of Mothers in our homes and throughout the Region, we teens step confidently into the future. We truly are a ‘Mighty’ Region that I am so grateful to be a part of.

We have spent nearly the entire program year building and preparing for this conference, and the Regional Teen Board, as well as the Regional Executive Board, is very excited to have you here. We now have one in-person TLC under our belt after the long COVID separation, and we are truly blessed to be together to reunite and celebrate our connection.

Through this TLC, I hope we truly reunite with each other and strive to be the change we want to see in our communities. So, let’s grow together; hang out; have a good time, and do some good along the way!

Teens of the Mighty Mid-Western Region, let’s make this TLC one to remember!

Hello Mighty Mid-Western Region!

Welcome, all, to the 69th annual Regional Teen Conference! My name is Kendall Cade, and I am honored to serve as your Regional Teen Secretary for the 2022-2023 program year. I cannot wait for all of you to join us at TLC this year. This year's theme is “Reunion: Celebrating our Connection.”

We have worked so hard to prepare a memorable and enjoyable TLC. I believe I can speak for the entire Regional Teen Board, along with all of the hardworking moms, when I say we can’t wait for you to experience it. Whether it is your first time at TLC or your sixth, you will leave with lasting memories. It has been 51 weeks since our last TLC, and I am sure you all are anxious to yet again meet face-to-face with your fellow regional teens.

I hope that somewhere between the different hands-on workshops, step and skit competitions, Olympics, Community Service, and parties, you find someone you can connect with; that is this year's theme, after all. This year is about reuniting, so get out there and make this experience last forever.

I encourage you all to take advantage and embrace all of the incredible opportunities we are providing you. Finally, in the spirit of this year's theme, I hope all of you branch out and meet five new people reuniting alongside you this weekend. I hope you enjoy this year's TLC!

Yours in Service,

Sincerely,

Greetings Mighty Mid-Western Region!

Welcome to the 69th Annual Mid-Western Region Teen Leadership Conference (TLC) hosted at The Ohio State University!

I am Carlos Dillard, Jr. your 2022-2023 Regional Teen Foundation Chair (RTFC). I hail from the award-winning South Suburban Chicago Chapter where 37 teens are actively involved in the community. It has been a true privilege and blessing serving you.

I believe that each of us plays an integral part in driving the mission of Jack and Jill. Together, we have used our power to make a positive difference in our communities. We are the leaders who were involved in community service projects. We are the leaders who participated in the Double Good popcorn fundraisers that funded some of the philanthropic efforts of Jack and Jill Foundation, provided scholarships, and supported so many other worthy causes. We made a difference!

Our focus and commitment to eradicating teen homelessness has been unwavering. Individual chapters have participated in Saturday Sleep Outs, raised money, donated to organizations, and held workshops on teen homelessness. Still, our biggest impact will come when all 41 chapters unite as a region. We will work together as a region at TLC to make a difference once again in the community.

As your Regional Teen Foundation Chair, I’ve enjoyed connecting and building relationships with teens from across our entire region. You’ve been kind, fun, and transparent in sharing your ideas, thoughts, and concerns with me and the other Regional Teen Officers (RTO). That’s why we were intentional about including your insights in the planning of this year’s TLC. Our TLC theme, “Reunion: Celebrating Our Connection” is centered around reuniting and reigniting our unique bonds of brother- and sisterhood and celebrating the successes that we as a Black community experience when we are united and connected.

I am beyond excited to meet more amazing and courageous teens from the Mighty Mid-Western Region. I am certain that we will create memories and enjoy the thoughtful activities that were planned for this weekend. Three pieces of advice to make this a TLC that you will never forget: 1) show up as the best iteration of yourself, 2) intentionally connect and bond with other teens in our region, and 3) continue to make a positive difference in the world. Let’s go, Mighty Mid-Western Region!

Yours in Service, Carlos

Dillard, Jr.

Greetings Mighty Mid-Western Region,

It is my honor to welcome you all to the 69th Annual Teen Leadership Conference! My name is Makenze Humphrey and I am honored to serve as your 2022-2023 Regional Teen Nominating Chair. We are thrilled to have you join us for this exciting event, and we are looking forward to seeing the amazing leadership skills and potential that each and every one of you brings to the table.

I would like to take a moment to recognize the Regional Teen Board and our Regional Team of Mothers for their exceptional hard work and dedication in planning and organizing this conference. Their commitment to creating a memorable and impactful experience for all attendees is truly inspiring. Additionally, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Regional Nominating Chair and the Regional Teen Nominating Committee for their continuous commitment to a fair election process.

This year's conference is jam-packed with exciting opportunities for learning, growth, and connection. Our lineup of workshops and activities is designed to challenge and inspire you to reach new heights in your leadership journey. As we reunite under the theme of “Reunion: Celebrating Our Connection,” we encourage you to take full advantage of this opportunity and to embrace and celebrate every moment of this unforgettable experience.

Once again, welcome to the amazing 69th Annual Teen Leadership Conference!

Yours in Service,

Hello Mighty Mid-Western Teens!

On behalf of the Might Mid-Western Region Executive Board, I want to congratulate all the teens who stepped outside of their comfort zone to attend this year’s Teen Leadership Conference.

For some teens this is the first time they have traveled without either of the parents. And for others this is the Jack and Jill event they can’t wait to attend.

This year, the theme of Reunion: Celebration our Connection speaks volumes as Jack and Jill of America, Inc. celebrates its 85th anniversary. The connections built over the last eight and a half decades exemplifies the reason our organization is still around today, to give our children every opportunity to succeed as productive members of society.

Children are the reason Jack and Jill was founded and the reason we are gathered this weekend on the campus of The Ohio State University. We want to reunite our young adults so they can fellowship and collaborate after being a part since the last Teen Leadership Conference. We want to give our teens ample opportunities to become the leaders of tomorrow and build connections before they venture out into the world.

During this time, we celebrate our teens especially our seniors as they transition from home life to campus life as they head off to college. Teens will also do the work of Jack and Jill by keeping our deeply rooted traditions alive of electing new Regional Teen Officers and participating in fiercely competitive competitions of step and skit. This is my favorite time of year as I get to see our children shine. I want to congratulate all who attended this TLC for a job well done. I hope you learned more about yourselves and met new friends.

Yours In Jack and Jill,

Greetings

Mid-Western Jack and Jill Teens,

Wow, what a year! Our beloved Jack and Jill of America, Inc. celebrated 85 years, our region celebrated 77 years, and this is our 69th Mid-Western Region Teen Leadership Conference.

Our legacy as the premier African American Organization focusing on building the next generation of African American Leaders continues to thrive. What an honor to be part of an organization that has 7 Regions, 262 Chapters, 14,000 Mother Members, and over 40,000 family members dedicated and passionate about our Mission.

Please know that you are part of our long-standing Legacy. It is because of each of you that we continue to thrive, that we continue to sacrifice and pour our best selves into this phenomenon called Jack and Jill of America, Inc. It is because we know the vision of our founders to inspire African American children through cultural exchanges, legislative advocacy, leadership development, philanthropic giving, and community engagement was not just a lofty goal, but a reality for our children that we will never stop fighting for.

To ensure that every single child who dares to be part of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. will realize their purpose, their voice, their dreams, their village, their potential, and their ultimate place in this world making not only a difference in the communities we touch and live, but an impact on the world. Then when you graduate out of this organization, you will do so with the knowledge, skills, confidence, character, and quality of mind to be leaders and doers prepared to thrive in a 21st-century democracy.

I am so proud of each of you for continuing to dream and achieve great things. It is your hard work and sacrifice that will keep this organization’s legacy of excellence for generations to come.

The American poet and activist Amanda S. C. Gorman said, “There is always light. If only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.” Teens of the Mighty Mid-Western Region of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., continue to be brave enough to be the light, never let anyone dim your light, and strive to lead others to the light. Your futures are as bright as the sun! With God as your true North, all things are possible.

To the Class of 2023, you have made it! You have been resilient through a pandemic, social injustices, and a democracy that continues to place greed and self-preservation above the right for all people to experience health, wealth, and prosperity. It might be hard to understand how these life lessons have developed you, but as Martin Luther King Jr. said, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” You have reached a milestone achievement and for that we are extremely proud; but know that this is only the beginning of a life’s journey where you can define, create, and live out the life you choose. Unapologetically you.

Teens of the Mid-Western Region, we honor you. You are worth celebrating, and your best is yet to come. Long Live Jack and Jill!

In Service to ALL Children, Marvis

Greetings Mighty Mid-Western Region Teens!

On behalf of the Teen Leadership Conference Planning Committee, I take great pride in welcoming each of you to the 69th Mid-Western Region Teen Leadership Conference on the beautiful campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. Teen Leadership Conference creates an unparalleled opportunity for Mid-Western Region teens to showcase their leadership skills, talent, and expertise in academia, athletics, and the arts; to raise their collective and individual voices as advocates for change; to network with teens from across the region; to celebrate the success of the graduating seniors; and to give back to the community with their time, talent, and treasure.

Bringing the theme “Reunion: Celebrating our Connection” to life in this extraordinary year has been a labor of love for every member of the MidWestern Regional Team. We would like to invite every teen to take full advantage of all this conference has to offer – from interactive workshops, legislative programming, and community service to competitions, teen officer elections, senior gala and engaging social interactions.

To our Regional Teen Leaders, I am very proud of your leadership this year. The Mid-Western Region is incredibly blessed to have an amazing group of Regional Teen Officers — President Carter Minor, Vice President Samantha Suggs, Secretary Kendall Cade, Treasurer Hudson Davis, Foundation Chair Carlos Dillard, Jr., and Nominating Chair Makenze Humphrey. Our Regional Teen Officers, along with the Teen Committee Co-Chairs and Teen Nominating Committee, capitalized on the opportunity to come together in person last fall to establish a strong bond of friendship while creating innovative programming, community service, and fundraising initiatives that were interactive, engaging and FUN! I am confident that their spirit and enthusiasm will be felt throughout this year’s Teen Leadership Conference. Kudos to all Regional Teen Leaders on a job well done!

To the Class of 2023, I wish a heartfelt congratulations to each one of you! You will all forever be remembered as the class of resilience and grit. Your parents have made a significant investment in your future, and I cannot wait to see how you utilize your power to make a difference in the world.

Finally, as this year’s TLC Lead, I would like to thank the Regional Executive Board, Regional Lead Teen Advisor Shea Burden, Regional Teen Advisor Anna Ivory-Lavergne, Teen Committee Advisors, LuVerda Martin and Tallette Kitchen, Regional Nominating Chair LaDawn Norwood and the entire TLC planning committee. Thank you for your dedication, diligence, and hard work in planning a dynamic and memorable experience for the teens of the Mighty Mid-Western Region. Have a wonderful conference and welcome to Columbus!

In service to our Children and All Children,

Greetings and Congratulations to the MWR TLDC!

Thank you for all of your hard work and contributions to motivate, inspire and elevate the teens in our Mid-Western Region Family.

There is nothing better than family! And TLDC Fam…you have truly outdone yourselves!

It has been a pleasure to work with you and watch you grow over the 2022-2023 program year. You have modeled solid leadership and been an inspiration to everyone within our Region (teens and adults).

Your commitment to innovation and excellence has truly emboldened our Region to fully embrace the guidance given by Mary McLeod Bethune when she stated, “We have a powerful potential in our youth, and we must have the courage to change old ideas and practices so that we may direct their power toward good ends.”

Thank you for your novel ideas and tenacity in making sure that the teens have a Leadership Conference that truly reflects the will of Mid-Western Region teens. We are so proud of you, and we pray that the Lord will continue to surround you with His love, protection, and favor as you move into the next phase of your life. We look forward to all of the great things you will do as leaders in our wider society.

“To Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy – to the only God our Savior be glory and majesty, power and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord, now and forevermore!” Amen. (Jude 1:24-25 NIV)

Sincerely,

Greetings and welcome!

It is with great joy that I bid you welcome to Columbus, my city. While every Teen Leadership Conference is special, there is no place like home. As we reflect on the theme for the 69th Mid-Western Region Teen Leadership Conference: “Reunion: Celebrating our Connection,” I am extremely inspired by the connectiveness, synergy, creativity, and genius of our Regional Teen Leadership.

As your Foundation Member at Large, I am Godly proud of our service effort. Together, partnering with Feed My Starving Children, our teens will provide meals to more than 100,000 children facing food insecurity. That is amazing!

Teens, hours of preparation, planning, and praying have been invested into this conference on your behalf. Reap every benefit. Meet new friends, reacquaint with existing ones, enjoy the workshops, learn during the plenaries, and have fun at the parties.

To the Class of 2023, even beyond this special time, continue to celebrate your many connections and every now and then have a reunion! Don’t ever stop learning. Don’t ever stop dreaming. Don’t ever stop being your courageous, intelligent, witty, and flexible selves. The world awaits and needs your greatness!

To all in attendance, the Teen Leadership Conference is the culmination of our Jacks and Jills journey. It is the epitome of why we mothers put in the work; this is one of our “whys”.

Long Live Jack and Jill,

mal@jjmidwesternregion.org

Greetings Teens, Families, and Friends of the Mighty Mid-Western Region,

Welcome to The Ohio State University for the 2023 Teen Leadership Conference!

TLC 2023 will embody this year’s theme of Reunion: Celebrating our Connection. We plan to honor the enduring strength of Jack and Jill while celebrating our successes as of today.

We look forward to the conference activities planned for our Jacks and Jills as we celebrate our connections through art, talent, and a little friendly competition. We appreciate the hard work of all our Teens, Teen Advisors, Mother Members, and Dads throughout the program year.

We were able to witness firsthand the commitment of the Regional Executive Board (REB) to excellence in teen experience under the dynamic leadership of Regional Director Tanya Watson. The REB along with the Regional Team has worked countless hours to deliver an impactful experience for each teen during TLC. The Regional Team has been an amazing support to the Teen Leadership Team, and we thank you for doing your best to bring the vision of our Regional Teen Leaders to fruition.

While working with the Lead Teen Advisors this year, we have been impressed by the excitement to develop, engage, and inspire our teens. Your around-theclock work is a labor of love, and we appreciate every extra minute you have spent on activities, assisting your teens with fundraising, and have poured into the leadership development and meaningful connections of our teens.

TLC is our teen’s Jack and Jill capstone experience - there is no doubt that what you pour into the preparation for the conference, your teens will definitely get back out in lasting memories from their TLC experience. The highlight of our year has been getting to know and work closely with the 2022-23 Regional Teen Officers. All six of our officers have grown into their leadership roles and enhanced their regional offices with extremely impressive work ethics. We are proud of each of them, and we celebrate our connections as leaders and thought partners.

Finally, a special congratulations to the Class of 2023! We look forward to watching you create the next chapter of your lives as leaders of tomorrow. We can’t wait to see your fingerprints all over the next musical productions, apps, dance videos, sports finals, space exploration, gaming systems, court rooms, research facilities, operating rooms, and fashion houses across the world. Always remember, “You matter, and you can make a difference!”

Long Live Jack and Jill!
