ABOUT ME My name is Jack Emerson and I am an industrial design student, currently in my 3rd year, of a four year course, at Northumbria University. I’ve always been curious of the things around me since I was young. Whenever I see an object, I have a desire to know how it is made, to take it apart and put it together again. Therefore when creating a new product, I always think about how to model it. I enjoy all aspects of design, although I have a strange and as yet unexplained fascination with chairs! My course covers a wide range of design projects, many of which have been briefed by worldwide industry. During projects, I feel that empathising with the user allows me to consider the best possible user experience with any product or service. I have grown up playing rugby, playing for Blaydon locally and my home town team Altrincham. As a result I take care of my fitness and nutrition.

DESIGN SKILLS Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign Rhino, Sketchup, Keyshot, Woodwork, Model Making, Sketching
EXPERIENCE Mar 2014 - Jun 2014
James Design - Furniture Design (Internship) Working with Nick James I was able to develop my workshop skills, whilst absorbing knowledge about the characteristics of wood. I worked alongside architects and builders which continuously presented us with problems to tackle. I was given the opportunity to design my own product (Hang) and develop it until it reached market. This encouraged me to design with efficiency, always thinking about how the product will ultimately be made.
Oct 2011 - Nov 2014
Marketing Insite – Web design company I focused mainly on logo and web design, including branding two charity websites. I also helped generate traffic to various websites by developing inbound links from other sites to increase their popularity on search engines.
Oct 2012 & Oct 2014
Jenny Domville Charity Golf Day (volunteering) My main role was to design the marketing aspects of the events, including the invitations, flyers, banners, website and e-shot. The objective of the day was to raise money for Leukemia and Lymphoma research, in memory of a close family friend. The events were a huge success and we managed to raise £42,000 in 2012 and £27,000 in 2014, through various auctions and money raised through team entry.
Jul 2011 - Aug 2011
Tuscan Rooms Italy – Holiday accommodation I spent a summer in Bagni Di Lucca, Italy, working on a town house. I primarily worked outdoors, building various elements including, new terracing, fencing and planting trees. I then moved onto another house, where I worked with an Italian builder to restore an old stone barn.
Jan 2011 - Jul 2011
PhotoUK - Portrait photographer During my time at PhotoUK I learnt a broad range of photographic techniques and skills; which included the fundamentals of camera use, a variety of lighting techniques and face to face customer communication skills. I was also involved in creating leaflets and posters for promotional offers and events which, through my design skills, helped to bring in new customers.
May 2009
Bentley Manchester I was given an insight into a car dealership and the many different roles which make up the Bentley workforce. For instance spent time in the showroom learning from a professional car salesman, how to sell a car and the communication skills needed with customers. I also worked with the marketing department on the different design tools the company used, in order to attract more customers, and the role in which advertisements had within the company.

PEDAL NEWCASTLE Through first hand research we identified a series of issues that cyclists in Newcastle feel are important. We created journey maps to communicate the insights we had gained.
Cycling is most fun when we want to do it, not when we have to do it.

Instead of solving practical problems we decided to inject some fun into cycling, adding value to the experience rather than focus purely on problem-solving. These attractions will put cycling front and centre, sparking a social media outburst.

LUCE Whilst working in Italy I was asked to design an indoor light for a rustic Tuscan guest house. I sourced strips of copper from an old boiler removed from the house, together with other scrap materials found in a shed and developed a unique design.

LIVING THE DRAIN
People are unknowingly clogging drain pipes by putting waste cooking oil down the drain.
How can we change peoples behaviour? The 1990’s sparked a global change in behaviour towards recycling without an incentive.
12
AWARENESS We propose to install slides in the city where people race down avoiding obstacles, making them aware of the importance of clean drain pipes. They will also be shown a convenient way to change their behaviour with The Grease Buster.
13
CONVIENIENCE The Grease Buster is for the kitchen used to store waste cooking oil. Pour the oil through the top and the filter will stop the larger bits going through. The wide tapered lid is an large target straight from the pan and is easily cleanable.
14
POSITIVITY Once full, The Grease Buster will be dropped off at local drop off point and it will be collected to recycle into biodiesel. Positive advertising on vehicles will show the public their actions are impacting the environment.

MICROBIOME RSA COMPETITION We are made up of 10% human cells and 90% bacteria. The microbiome houses trillions of micro-organisms that protect us and help our body function. Nutrition has a major impact on the balance of the microbiome.
The Organic Revolution will collaborate with supermarkets to show people the benefits of organic food on the microbiome.

ONLINE Customers will go online and check their points to find out about their microbiome level. They will be given different organic options and encouraged to improve their bacteria.
17
INSTORE Whilst shopping, the user will scan a product to discover the information on the microbiome and the journey it has travelled. They will also learn how to cook the food to optimise nutritional value.
18
INTERFACE The information point is touch screen and scans similar to self checkout systems.
19
HOLE PUNCH This brief was to take an existing product, the Kin hole punch, and understand the way it was built in order to re-create it in Rhino. Once built, I used keyshot to add material and the environment.

NON LITERAL FORM To enhance our skills during second year, we were asked to design and foam model an electrical object with no immediate function. A non literal form.

HANG Whilst at James Design, I had the opportunity to design, develop and produce a small product called Hang. When designing this, I had to consider the available materials and equipment that were in the workshop in order to make the product. Inspired by the intricate detail of Danish furniture, I integrated the radius to give a less aggressive profile.
