THE SITE
Visiting the site, the existing boat house lacked presence within the landscape and also within it’s greater urban fabric. I was there on a warm Sunday and was surprised by the lack of people. Why? I had to make an effort to get to the nearly hidden site and when I arrived I felt disappointed by the experience of the boat house. The river dominated the site, while the boat house sat to the side. The only real interaction between the two were the boats sitting in the river, a distance from the building. There was no sense of community, caused by the clearly separated programs. The cafÊ, restaurant and kiosk were clearly separated, only connected by paths leading to the ground plane.

RESPONDING TO SITE
The proposed boat house to has to have more presence within the landscape and the greater urban environment. The connection between the boat house and the river needs to strengthen. Spaces that facilitate and encourage a sense of community are needed, connecting the building to the people in the surrounding urban form.

A new river bank flows into the centre of my boat house, creating a small marina for the boats to tie up to. The building curves around the river, creating a space for the boat house to interact with the water. The programs follow this arc, all creating presence between themselves. The semi-circular form focuses the view from the interiors spaces onto the river. It’s important for the river to be a central element of the boat house, not only because this type of building is it is fairly unique in Melbourne, but also because it defines the boat house’s identity.
not only designed as a thoroughfare, but also as a space were people can sit, dine and view the river and also interact with the water by having direct access to the boats. Off this board walk is a sitting and standing area near the kiosk and hire counter, the café, the storage and workshop area and the restaurant.
The eastern and western river bank entries and the main entry all develop into shared public spaces that connect the restaurant, café, kiosk and the river. The board walk along the north of the building is 25
THE RESTAURANT Inside the restaurant communal tables and an open cold kitchen and bar create a more relaxed and shared experience. Three of the panes of glass can rotate open slightly, so when the weather permits, sounds from outside can enter into the interior. This connects it acoustically to the external world creating a more open experience.

THE CAFE The café is a similar space to the restaurant, but more informal. It can also be acoustically connected to the landscape. This would be particularly effective when noises from the sports oval across the river can be heard inside the café. The sounds of the community members helps to strengthen the sense of community in the boat house. There are also large communal tables in the café, helping to encourage and facilitate the interaction between the users of the program.
being stored or boats being repaired in the workshop. This creates a more holistic experience to hiring a boat and paddling on the river. A glass wall between the café and workshop reveals the boats being repaired, adding to this experience.
The shared boat storage and workshop are to be open to the public during the day and supervised by the staff. The general public can enter the space to see boats out of the water 29

Rather than creating a boat house that just creates visual presence in the site, I’ve created a building that interacts with the immediate landscape and also with the surrounding urban environment. I’ve created spaces where a sense of community is developed and enhanced. It’s this sense of shared community that elevates the experience of the boat house, ultimately giving it a sense of presence within it’s landscape.
