This shot is about my relationship with New York whilst living there for 5 weeks. The excitement and unfamiliarity of living and working somewhere I had never encountered before. This self portrait was taken in my apartment in Chinatown. I wanted to explore the relationship between notions of the sublime and the land. The work is titled “Breathing Space” as these places allow people to escape from modern life. They appear constant but these seemingly timeless spaces actually show evidence of a subtler history as the cumulative effects of time can be seen through traces and indications left by people who in their appreciation of the landscape also continue to shape it.
