WELCOME TO MY PORTFOLIO Hello! I am a third year student studying industrial design at Northumbria University and I am currently looking for a 6 month professional work placement starting March 2019. Here is a small collection of a few of my recent projects, I hope you enjoy!

FIRE EXTINGUISHER A personal project to design a next generation speaker device. Who knew that bass could put out fire?

T H E TE CH N O LO G Y Fire needs three things to survive; heat, fuel and oxygen. This extinguisher works by removing oxygen from the equation and starving the fire. It does so by creating areas of high and low pressure around the flame, and at certain frequencies the low pressure acts as a vacuum to draw the oxygen away from the flame long enough to snuff it out. Simple really.

K EY B E N E F I TS - No mess or residue left after use. - Extinguisher does not get cold, reducing risk of user injury. - No use by date, extinguisher wont need annual inspections. - Reusable. Does not need to be replaced after use.


P OT E N T I A L L I M I TATI O N S - The technology is not widely tested. - Does not stop hot material re-igniting. - Requires power source or battery.

O U T E R S PACE This technology may be appropriate for use in space stations due to the fact that it doesn’t create any residue that could fill up an enclosed space or make its way into any intricate electrical systems. The fact that it is electrical also means that it can be recharged from solar panels and reused multiple times.

IN D UST R I A L An extinguisher that puts out fires without damaging the environment around it could be especially useful in industry, perhaps in laboratories to avoid ruining batches of chemicals, or in rooms full of electrical equipment.

M O U N TE D One route I wanted to explore was to combine the speaker system with a fire alarm. This means it could be mounted above a stove or used to replace traditional sprinkler systems with the benefit of not further damaging assets like electrical goods.


CO NC E PT R E F IN E MENT

F UN CT IO N To make the product more compact, I focused on designing a spring-loaded telescopic collimator, that extends automatically when the trigger is pulled. This makes the extinguisher easier to store and less bulky when the consumer is moving around.

IN T UIT IVE USE One important thing to take into account is that the user will generally be in a high pressure situation when using this product so it is imperative that it is immediately intuitive to use. With this is mind the extinguisher has been designed with only a single red trigger, similar to that of an electric drill, which is held down.

FO R M This extinguisher is designed to look neutral and clean in a kitchen. However, when fire is detected it illuminates making it immediately obvious to grab in a high pressure situation.

POP-UP A brief to design and make a 3 page pop-up book to demonstrate to a user how to use an everyday appliance.

W H Y CO N DO M S? Why not? I made this pop-up book to demonstrate how to put on a condom on because its something most people use in their life (hopefully), and the problem is that it is not usually talked about.

F R E S H E RS FA I RS During freshers students find themselves meeting new people and settling in to their new surroundings which can be daunting but hopefully this can break the ice.

K E E P IN G I T P G Whilst the book needs to explain the steps clearly it is important to keep it child friendly in case they are dropped in the street.

F IG H T IN G TA B O O S Making the steps playful and fun is a good way of breaking social barriers and removing the embarrassing stigma around sex.

INNOVIA TECHNOLOGY For 6 months from March to August of 2018 I worked as an Innovation Consultant whilst on placement at Innovia Technology in Cambridge.

Working in a professional environment for 6 months taught me good communication skills between myself and project managers, allowing me to work both independantly and in a team effectively. Exposure to clients, both helping to host workshops and sitting in on client calls also gave me good exposure to help understand how to build client relationships.

GapApp A group service design brief to help young adults manage their finances. Lets give those gap year students a helping hand...

2nd year project - 4 week timefame



Target Audience

This project focuses on 18-24 year olds, but I specifically wanted to look at young adults looking on travelling or going abroad as people within this age bracket generally have little experience saving and budgeting money.

Insights A huge 2.5 million people in the UK are planning a gap year. On average it costs £3500 for a gap year with parents funding 20-30% of this, whilst only 10% of students fully fund their own gap year. An increase in tuition fees has made gap years more popular between students. But many don’t investigate them because of the fear of how much they think they will cost. 43% of students saving don’t have a clear plan, with many not knowing how much to save, and getting lost with a lack of knowledge of their progress.

Opportunities

There is currently a gap in the market for a service that takes the user through both the saving and budgeting aspects of a gap year from start to finish.



Barclays & Lonely Planet

GapApp is a service that would be based on a mutual partnership between Barclays and Lonely Planet, meaning GapApp can provide both financial and travel advice.

Understanding Data

By visualising data GapApp helps the user understand the numbers and gives them a better idea of how their money is being spent and if they are still on track.

Intelligent Response

To provide the most effective support to the user GapApp has a vast data base of information, drawn from both Barclays and Lonely Planet, allowing it to respond intelligently to the actions of the user by offering relevant suggestions.

Getting Set Up

Home Page & Settings

Getting started with GapApp is easy! Simply enter your email and password, your card details and then answer a few questions about your planned trip.

The user has a completely customisable home page that can include features such as weather or deals on rooms. This can all be adjusted within the settings page.


Saving, Budgeting & Suggestions

Notifications & Reminders

All payments on card are tracked and then displayed visually. GapApp will then offer advice on spending or suggestions like shortening/ extending the trip.

GapApp will notify the user with important information and updates on their progress towards their goal. This can be adjusted in the settings section.

He buys GapApp for ÂŁ1.99 and enters his details...

Kyle sees GapApp advertised on Instagram... GapApp reviews his spending and suggests reducing spending on specific items

...So through the app he books a bungee jump!

Insights and Research

Sleep Per Night for New Parents

Statistics show the amount of sleep new parents get: Hours: 0-2 3-4 5-6 7-8 9-10 11+

Its Quiet... Too Quiet

During my primary research I found that some parents actually feel more uneasy when they can’t hear anything from their child and they don’t know what they are up to.

Heartbeat

However, they all agreed that just seeing a representation of their child’s heartbeat would be significantly more comforting and put them at ease.



Existing Products

As primary research I looked into products currently on the market finding monitors that react to room temperature, motion, sleep quality and humidity. However, there seems to be a gap on the market for a baby monitor that tracks the child’s heartbeat...

Emotional Connection

From the initial idea generation stage I wanted to aim to recreate the emotional bond between mother and child. A heartbeat is symbolic of this relationship with the aesthetic of a hugging/ protective shell over the light enforcing this.

Technology

To track the baby’s heartbeat I intend on fitting the monitoring device with a small electric potential sensor. This coin-sized device will be placed inside the child’s mattress cover to detect the child’s heartbeat. The EPS uses an electrode to detect tiny variations in the body’s electric field and is effective from up to a few feet away.

Reassurance Pulsating light mimics child’s exact heart rate, giving the parent reassurance and highlighting physical activity.

Heartbeat Tracking Heartbeat is tracked using an electric potential sensor, allowing an accurate heart reading without disturbing the child’s sleep.

Emotion Hug-like interaction and visual heartbeat allows parents to feel an emotional connection to their child without being in the same room.


KMG EMPLOYMENT I spent the summer of 2017 working for KMG Systems as an assistant design engineer.

Flavour Drum Project

Under the direction of the design manager, my task was to rationalise the current FDRUM series by creating a set of standardised frame sizes cable of fitting any requested drum size. Over the 3 month period I had to research and collect data of all previous models which I organised with excel, then analysed that data to create a set of standardised frame sizes which I modelled in SolidWorks and created laser cut files for.

PET CEMETERY A brief to design a flat pack cardboard coffin for a pet. My response is a dignified send-off for the family gold fish.
