Fendi Casa takes its leather seriously
A Sofa to Seduce
BY DISTANCING ITSELF from Fendi’s successful apparel collection, Fendi Casa is drawing inspiration from contemporary design rather than its signature accessories. “We are using the same materials and workmanship, but in an entirely new way,” says Alberto Vignatelli, chief of Club House Italia, whose team of designers producing the collection consists of craftsmen rather than couturiers. “This isn’t about a continually revolving fashion—this is about creating a permanent lifestyle for the home, whether it’s a Manhattan loft or a Tuscan villa.” Fendi Casa’s furniture collection, which debuted at the Milan furniture fair in spring, is a seductive exercise in sinuous curves and sensual textures that dominate everything from the double-faced chenille armchairs to the nabuk leather beds. “Fendi Casa expresses the style of desire,” says Vignatelli. “These are beautiful things to surround oneself with that give pleasure.”
The flushed-pink Eros sofa (below), one of the collection’s signature pieces, is draped in crocodileembossed leather that tapers around every refined curve. The raised, light metal frame gives it poised buoyancy, while a removable backrest affords a range of uses. The collection’s leather color palate extends to ruby red, cognac, camel, hot chocolate, safari, black and optic white, providing an opulent backdrop for the geometric shapes. Already established internationally, Fendi Casa’s first U.S. showroom is set to open this month in the center of Miami’s design district. The 6,800-square-foot space will function as the company’s stateside headquarters in addition to serving as a petting zoo for the skins and pelts that embellish such accessories as carpets, cushions, sheets and duvets. Each piece of furniture is marked with a silver plate indicating its authenticity and serial edition. SAMANTHA BROOKS
