Graphic Design Program Overview

A Focused Curriculum

Students who major in graphic design take an array of courses that are primarily digitally based. These courses will focus on artistic development, emphasizing the conceptual understanding needed to produce thoughtful, engaging and professional work. Students within this major will also challenge notions concerning the making, exhibiting and viewing of art and graphic design. The ultimate goal of the program is to foster a new theoretical and aesthetic understanding of art and graphic design that leads toward a unique creative vision.

The courses in the graphic design and digital imaging curriculum teach the students that design is a thinking process and that a designer has a wide array of tools at their disposal to facilitate their ideas. The department has numerous art studios, exhibition spaces and labs including:

The Department of Art & Graphic Design fosters excellence, individuality, and diversity while encouraging freedom of thought, imagination, and honest, open inquiry in order to develop and expand students’ creative, intellectual, and aesthetic development through its commitment to quality programs in studio art, art history and graphic design.

Graphic designers combine artistic ability with technical knowledge to create designs used in print and electronic media. Our first-year courses introduce students to graphics software, typography and design fundamentals that are essential for a deeper understanding of Graphic Design. Second-year students apply these skills in a unique instructional setting that blends marketing and advertising concepts with art creation. A fourth-semester course prepares students for employment through career and portfolio development.
