This initial exercise for the course is intended to analyze the design principles of a chosen precedent building. Along with technical orthographic drawings of the building, the student is highly recommended to diagram the building in its functional and social spheres.

Sendai Mediatheque by Toyo Ito is what some can envision as architecture truly meant for the future. That is, the technology behind it pushes the boundaries of the physical, structure system and the ethereal.
The glass façade makes it seem almost transparent at all times of the day. This also results in a great intake of natural lighting rendering it as a form of nature’s elements. Toyo Ito’s vision has been quite the architect to follow after this critical design.

With an in depth diagrammatic analysis of the precedent, the student must further explore the qualities of the precedent through a modelling exercise.
Synthesis Model
13
The shifting of the floor plates provoke an alternative spatial quality that defines the uniqueness of Toyo’s Sendai Mediatheque
The properties of each and every column provide structural stability to the building.

Use the feature(s) and design approaches of the precedent towards the bath house and recreation center in its new intervention site. Students are given an opportunity to rebuild the dislocated center in Trinity Bellwoods and reintegrate it in an active part of the park. This new site invokes the topography, culture and circulation.
