- When Pyrometric cones bend -
Pyrometric cones are devices used in the ceramic kiln to monitor the heat levels, they begin to melt and bend when the temperature reaches a certain intensity, from being regular and hard-edged forms they become soft and mishapen until finally they melt down significantly losing their sharp angles. This interesting transformation has inspired me to create a womenswear collection. Pyrometric cones are just my starting point, my research leads me to varying melting structures that have informed and inspired my work during my Major Project.
I have experimented with various materials and substances that best imitate melting effects in fabrications, from hard bisque to soft felted wool, this collection is produced by mixing materials together from both inside and outside fashion processes and techniques. Starting from geometric porcelain pieces that loose their edges, to parts of the human body being smoothly chiseled. Contrasting materials and textures like lustrous and matte surfaces are emphasized throughout my looks. The reflection of light from glazes and skin complexion are key colours within the palette, with these magical techniques I hope to find forms that both delight and inspire the wearer and the audience.
