1-1 discussion & talk w/ John 1 to 1 with George about the project Have more info on the wall Keep animation simple Right now, just need to find the content then you can go from there. The vid is good idea, maybe consider audio? Have a set of small illustration Make stickers Just recycling the content you have made for people to take away

Infographics: First notes Infographics https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=IejpU9fpX5s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-D_ Np-3dVBQ https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ztWHqUFJRTs This video uses a different way to share the idea of glimate change / green house gases- It uses the idea of a game of tetris something most people are familiar with. I think its a good way to share infomation because it can break down the infomation to a simpler format.

Animated case study: Halo coffee Animated infographic: This infographic is by Halo Coffee. Positive: Fast paced Voice over Colour scheme Use of the O repeatedly Simple info given which is helped by simple designs Negative: Might be a bit ‘too fast’ at times but so long as the infomation given is limited it is great. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Jn9YnUroa50

Animated case study: Statistic/ type based Animated infographic: This infographic is animated and is used to provide infomation about Brexit and the different deals that the UK could get when they left the EU. It’s important to recognise that this work could have been viewed by thousands. Positive: Simple clean layout/ design Colour scheme is simple (but not sure how it links to the work) Voice over Timing, not slow but gives the audience time to process the info. Negative: Kinda boring? Not very engaging to the audience so they will lose interest. Font choice

Animated case study: Storyline based Animated infographic: Rang-tan: The story of dirty palm oil. The Greenpeace / Iceland christmas advert. Shows ‘Rang-tan’ in the little girls bedroom because his habitat had been destroyed. Positive: Amazing illustrations Storyline pulls at the heart strings Audience gets attached to Rang-tan Emma Thompson VO Rhyme/ storytelling VO Promotes protesting- Gets people involved. Negative: Maybe doesn’t provide a lot of clear info- explains through the story but possibly could be made a bit clear.

Other examples of using characters Two examples of how brands/ ads have incorporated a character to share infomation is Aldi’s Kevin the carrot and Alexander from the Compare the market ads. Cute: Audience will become attached to the cute characters. Tell a story: re-occuring ads that tell the story and the audience becomes invested in whats going on. Toys: Both released teddies/ plush toys of the characters. People even fought in the shop to get the Kevin toy meanwhile Compare the market have released a whole set of teddies for people to collect.

Importance of a character Greenpeace Having a cute lovable character is something that Greenpeace use within there ads a lot. Like the other two examples Greenpeace also released a teddy version of the character which many kids wanted which then helped raising money with the proceeds going to charity.

Sketching Orangutans

Sketching Orangutans Since thinking of the video or making gifs of my character I wanted to have a quick look into how the body of an Orangutan moves/ stretches ect. What next? -Have a go at creating my character -Try make a simple animation to see how you can make the character come to life.

Basic characteristics: -Big belly -Elongated arms -Hair -Hook hands / feet -Teardrop (ish) shapes

The character- Fist proper sketchy stuff First idea of what character will look like on procreate: Just a couple of sketches for how the body is shaped. Still to do: Other poses (need to figure out how he interacts with info first) Face expressions Colours ect... Put sketches into illustrator and make them vectors ect...

Animating- bringing basic character to life Quick basic animation: I created a little basic animation using procreate just to see if could understand how to animate the Orangutan’s swinging movements. I also tested to see if it looked like fluid movements when the video was put onto social media. I realise there are a few timing problems which hopefully I can correct in my actual animations when I use After Effects.

Incorporating the character What I hope mine could be like This is an example of how I would like to incorporate my character into my leaflets and infographics. Landor / Petbarn Simple Limited colour scheme Nice clean Nice use of type Character interacts with the info Sketch isnt exactly what Im gonna go off but thats the general idea of why I think I can incorporate it into my work.

Note to self/ What next? Ok, so next what you gotta do is... Start sketching designs for infographics -Then create a couple versions. Then start work on the animation/s -Short infomative ones -Ones with character? -Sketch final exhibition idea (Ruth has put the wall in between so figure out how to separate the work and make it look better in the space) Figure out freebies Talk to George about maybe the lil collab thing he wants to do (This isnt a priority atm)

Reminder: Make new file/ separate the sketchbook, the file is getting too big.

HBUC Exhibition space ideas

HBUC Exhibition space w/ extra wall

HBUC Exhibition space inspo Explaining what it wouldve been: Each leaflet would make 3 of the posters / banners, so that would make 9 in total. Plus there would be a lil intro to the project so that would be 10. Then dividing the banners there would be a table which played animations or something, even just simple gifs of the character and then my ‘brand’. The other table would have the freebies on it. I would have also hoped to get a cute cutout of my character like the example to the left from MMU last year.

Adapted exhibition layout

Inspo for the adapted exhibition Explaining the adapted exhibition: These examples are to reinforce the idea of what I would expect for a ‘real exhibition’ to look like if it was in a museum environment. The exhibition would be mainly directed at kids. The posters would be incorportated to explain each stage, but hopefully it would feel immersive, they could see the natural habitat of the orangutans (This is when the wayfinding of orangutan tracks would be included) and then futher in the exhibiton see the aftermath of the palm oil industry and see the environment chanage to the plantations seeing trees cut down ect... (this is when the wayfinding would change to tractor tracks ect...)

Title for exhibition INDONESIA’S PALM OIL PROBLEM For the title I wanted it to hint at what the problem was ect... Like it sort of will tell a story? I like the Battersea & Wood Green use of symbols. I think my idea is pretty much the same as what Wood Green chose to do. So in the ‘O’ of each letter I will put a symbol that links to the story. 1. The lil map of Sumatra/Borneo (But idk if I like the way it looks) 2. Palm Oil tree 3. Orangtaun. (this could as be used for other animals eg. tigers)

Other uses for logo / symbols

Logo / icons: Like I mentioned earlier I wanted to include the symbols within the text title because it helps explain the ‘story’ a little bit, however I think rather than just using the text as ... I guess branding? these 3 icons could be incorporated in other ways and possibily become understandable without the text having to accompany it.

Other uses for logo / symbols / patterns

Testing the watch idea The watch strap idea: Back at the very start of the project Andy & I discussed about making watch strap designs that tackled specific issues. Well, obviously the project took a turn and I went down a different route. But I always thought in the back of my mind that if I had time I could get a mockup and see what could have been. Since this is just a test and I couldn’t find a mockup for the band, I have used a site and taken screen shots just so I can see the idea and how it would’ve looked. I think it doesnt look too bad just the pictures arent very good quality. (Website I used) https://www.zazzle.co.uk/create_your_ own_apple_watch_band

Pure imagination storyboard (not doing this)

What animations I will aim to make What animations I will try to make: I want to try and make some gifs of my character moving. Even if its just re-making the sketchy ones I did on procreate as the test but I think they actually went quite well. & hopefully do a vid like the ww2 one but like showing the decline of the orangutans (using the info from the barchart on the 2nd leaflet.)

(Original procreate sketch & the 3 instagram tests)

UPDATE: Whilst creating the video, ive ran into some problems with my laptop/ graphics card so After Effects isnt work properly. I can’t even get it fixed because of the lockdown so I dont know (These where the updated illustations that where being used (ropes would have moved ect..) if I will be able to finish the video.

when my laptop is fixed ill post them on instagram ect.. when I show other parts of my work)

Looking at some animals to possibly include

Collab w/ George Now that we have lists of animals: We will pick 2/3 animals from each of the lists which I will then illustrate and give to George who will create a map which links to his work, then animate the animals popping up ‘appearing’ then fading out / disappearing.

UPDATE: We decided that with the current events and time schedule that we both won’t have time to do the collab but once the project is over we will do the work just so that we have something extra thats of a good standard to go into our portfolios.
