/S5 Communal Market Hub Location: Mantin, Negeri Sembilan Synopsis: Studio Five undertakes the quest in its exploration to seek for the harmony and/or discord. The research involves an informed and meaningful on-site investigation in Mantin which lies along the main trunk road connecting Kajang and Seremban, the capital city of Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus. We are to partake in a conversation concerning its local context bearing in mind that “Architecture is about bringing place and project, background context and the life of future users into relationship. If it can weave together what has come before - the environment context - and what will come - the users - and through the process of designing and making raise the ingredients artistically, it can find in a new, conscious and relevant way the organic process on which the evolution of places depends.� - pp 156, Day, C. SITE INVENTORY

INTRODUCTION MANTIN IS LOCATED AT NEGERI SEMBILAN, THE HONOURIFIC TITLE FOR THE STATE IS DARUL KHUSUS, THE NAME MANTIN ORIGINATES FROM THE PLACE ITSELF THAT USED TO BE A TIN MINE. THE EUROPEANS CALLED IT “MINE TIN” WHILE THE MALAYS CALLED IT “MANTIN” DUE TO PRONOUNCIATION ERROR. URBAN MORPHOLOGY • A GENTLE SLOPE OF THE EARLIER SETTLEMENT OF MANTIN, REFLECTING THE LOGICAL STRUCTURE ABOUT THE EXPANSION OF THE TOWN IN MORE THAN A CENTURY. • DEVELOPMENT SPREADS IN A RELATIVE UPHILL DIRECTION BRANCHING OUT TO RESIDENTIAL AREA. TIN MININING LAKES ARE IN VICINITY TO THE RIVER AT THE BOTTOM END OF THE SLOPE. • THE SYSTEMATIC ROADS LINES CONNECTING PARTS OF NUCLEATED SETTLEMENT CHARACTERIZED THE TOWN AREA. • THE BOTTOM END MARKS THE RIVER AND THE OPPOSITE MARKS NEW ZONES OF DEVELOPMENT.

THE COMMUNITY, THROUGH ITS CENTRAL POSOTION AND ITS CULTURAL HERITAGE, INTERVENES AS A STRATEGIC SITE TO VALUE. THE INTERVENTION AIMS AT AFFIRMING ITS NEW STATUS AS BUILDING OF PUBLIC INTEREST. ADDITIONALLY, A NEW HORIZONTAL VOLUME ENGLOBES THE AREA AND BY ONLY ITS PRESENCE RECONNECTS ALL THE ENTITIES OF THE NEW CULTURAL MARKET CENTRE. IT BRINGS BACK A CERTAIN CLARITY TO THIS URBAN LANDSCAPE WITHOUT ALTERING THE ARCHITECTURAL QUALITIES OF THER OLDER BUILDINGS.

DESIGN INTENTION THE NEW VOLUME PROVIDES A FUNCTIONAL COHERENCE IN THE COMBINING OF DIFFERENT PROGRAMS, WELCOMING ESPECIALLY THE PASSAGE OF PEOPLE. THIS ASSUMPTION LIMITS THE HOLD ON THE EXISTING HERITAGE AND GOES IN THE DIRECTION OF AN ECONOMY OF MEANS THAT BENEFITS NEW AREA OF GATHERING AND ENTERTAINMENT.

/S6 Gadang Civic Centre Location: Kg. Bharu, Kuala Lumpur Synopsis: The urban village of Kampong Baru is an island of traditional Malay life in the middle of Kuala Lumpur, ringed by high-rise buildings and traffic jams, preserved for generations by a colonial-era law that gives village elders a veto over any major development. It is also one of the most valuable tracts of land in the capital and is estimated to be worth up to US$1.4 billion. But so far Kampong Baru elders have turned developers away, saying they want to preserve their ethnic Malay ‘kampung’ lifestyle. This project challenge our abilities to understand issues of heritage and social in a historical urban context. It requires coping with the changing needs of the inhabitants in order to flourish and be sustained. The complexity in building in historic areas is in respecting historic and environmental characteristics of surrounding urban fabric, and also respecting cultural tradition, economic condition, and social aspects of the inhabitants. The design in historic areas needs more than formal aesthetics guidelines. It needs a process generating a dialogue between community and professionals.

KAMPONG BHARU IS ONE OF THE LAST PLACE IN THE CAPTIAL CITY OF MALAYSIA WHERE THE NAME ‘KAMPONG’ IS TRULY FITTING. WITH MAJORITY OF THE LOCALS LIVING IN TRADITIONAL MALAY HOUSE CENTURY OLD, DATING BACK TO THE EARLY 1900s. TODAY KAMPONG BHARU IS FACING AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE AS THE IMMINENT THREAT OF DEVELOPERS ENCROACHING IN THE ENCLAVE, DISRUPTING THE LOCALS WAY OF LIFE AND EVENTUALLY DETERIORATE THE IDENTITY OF THE PLACE.

/Co KITA REKA GARDEN Location: SBPI, Gombak Synopsis: The community project transcribed follows the narrative of Kita Reka, a hands-on project where students are required to design and build a resting and gathering node for the students of SBPI Gombak. The project of Kita Reka is then part of a joint community project by GIEF, UTAR and InterGomb. As part of a first real experience in constructing a permanent structure, the community project then seeks to be more than a temporary and sometimes irresponsible effort to the less-unfortunate but rather an everlasting requiem and aid for the people. The project seeks to build what the commercial would often not provide as well as a tempering of perseverance and the transfer of skills to reality. Most importantly, this is a project about the remembrance of the ideals and responsibilities of architects towards the students where morality and our duty to the community stands to be re-established.

A PROPOSED DESIGN FOR SBPI GOMBAK

THE PROJECT KITA REKA WAS MEANT TO CREATE A SENSE OF PLACE TO THE GARDEN OF INTEGOMB. THE TWO “PONDOK” AND SEATING PLATFORMS WILL SERVE AS A CASUAL MEETING PLACE WHICH PROMOTE THE ABOVE-MENTIONED QUALITIES. SOME UNIQUE “KAMPUNG” FEATURES SUCH AS THE BAMBOO PELITA STAND, CHICKEN NESTLING, LANTERN WILL ADD TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITIES OF THIS GARDEN. THE PROJECT THEN STARTS WITH A SCHEMATIC DESIGN PHASE WHERE THE CLASS IS REQUIRED TO ANALYSE THE PROJECT BRIEF AND CONDUCT RESEARCH ON THE PRESERVATION AND ASSEMBLY OF BAMBOO FOR THE EVENTUAL CONSTRUCTION OF OUR DESIGN AS WELL.
