Brad Erickson Head Coach South Dakota State University head coach Brad Erickson is entering his 32nd season as the head coach of the Jackrabbit men’s and women’s swimming teams. Since being named head swimming coach in 1976, Erickson has coached the Jackrabbit men to a North Central Conference championship in 1979 and the SDSU women to an NCC title in 1981. In the 2000-01 season he was named the North Central Conference Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year after leading SDSU to a fourth-place finish at the conference meet. In the fall of 2002, Erickson was honored with SDSU’s Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence, which honors an SDSU alumnus in the field of education and coaching. A 1974 graduate of South Dakota State, Erickson became the first SDSU swimmer to compete in the NCAA Division II Championships, as a junior. The Arlington, S.D., native won three North Central Conference titles, winning the 200-yard breaststroke twice and the 100-yard breaststroke once. Erickson has continued to represent SDSU at NCAA swimming championships during his coaching career, serving as a meet official and judge at the Division I women’s and men’s championships since 1982. He also has served as the NCAA Division II Championships coordinator since 1996 and is a past member of the NCAA Swimming Committee. Aside from his duties as swimming coach, Erickson also teaches aquatic courses and various other activity courses. He and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of two grown sons: Ben and Blake.

Diving Coach
Phil Hurley enters his fourth season as assistant men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at South Dakota State this fall. Hurley is the recruiting coordinator for SDSU, specializes in coaching the distance events and assists Coach Erickson with team practices and events. Hurley says,“I have swum and worked with a lot of great coaches and by being an athlete myself I try to pass along my experiences to the athletes so they can learn from my mistakes and my successes.” Hurley competed collegiately at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where he served as team captain for three seasons before graduating in 1998. After completing a military commitment in the U.S. Army, Hurley enrolled in graduate school at George Mason University in Fairfax,Va., serving as a graduate assistant swimming coach for two seasons while completing a master’s degree in exercise, fitness and health promotion. While at George Mason, Hurley also coached several club and youth teams in Northern Virginia. Coach Hurley is the Chair of South Dakota Masters Swimming branch and is a member of the United States Masters Swimming organization. He also runs the local chapter of the Prairie Masters Swim team.
2 Swimming & Diving
Amie Buoy is in her first season with the Jackrabbit swimming and diving teams as diving coach. A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Buoy graduated from the University of Nebraska in May 2007, with a degree in international studies. She competed on the Huskers’ swimming and diving team from 2002 through 2006, earning a trip to the 2005 NCAA Championships, where she earned 18th place in the 3-meter diving competition. She also earned second place on both the 1- and 3-meter boards at the Big 12 Championships in 2005. Prior to competing at Nebraska, she trained with the Edmonton Kinsmen Diving Club and was a member of the Canadian Junior National Team in 1999 and 2002. In 2002, she received 12th place in the 3-meter competition at the Junior World Championships in Aachen, Germany. Buoy is working toward her master’s degree in sports pedagogy at South Dakota State.
•S D S U Men’s Swimming & Diving Preview • The South Dakota State University men’s swimming and diving team returns most of its swimmers from last season and looks to improve on a fifth-place finish at the MidContinent Conference Championships. One of the three team captains is junior Mark Garrigues, who was an all-conference honoree in the pool and in the classroom. After setting five season bests at the Mid-Con Championships, Garrigues will be back to concentrate on freestyle and individual medley events. Another captain is Cade Roberts, who will primarily swim the breaststroke. Roberts finished the season by placing third in the 200-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 100 breaststroke. The third captain is senior Hadleigh Tyler, who was a part of the 200 medley relay team that broke a school record and finished fourth at the Mid-Con Championships.Tyler is a sprinter who will focus on the freestyle and the 100 butterfly events. Other swimmers to watch for, according to head coach Brad Erickson, are freshmen Andrew Arens and Andrew Martin. Erickson said that Martin “has shown very good promise” in fall practice. He will compete in the distance freestyle, which allows junior Josh Mueller to concentrate on butterfly. Arens will be a utility man competing in a wide variety of events as needed. In high school, Arens was part of a team that won the Colorado Class 5A team title. Another freshman who is expected to produce this season is Patrick Heyen from Lincoln, Neb., who will be the first men’s diver on the Jackrabbit squad in quite some time. Heyen was one of the top high school divers in Nebraska finishing third in the 1-meter diving competition at the state meet as a junior and placing second as a senior. Also returning are Chris Holzwarth and Matt Josephson, who were both part of SDSU’s record-setting 400 medley relay
team that placed second at the conference meet. Holzwarth also swam on the 400 freestyle relay team that set a school record and placed sixth individually in the 400 individual medley. An associate member of the Mid-Continent Conference the last two seasons, SDSU is now a full member of the newly named Summit League. In the preseason coaches’ poll, the Jackrabbits were picked to finish in a tie for fifth place with IUPUI — matching their fifth-place effort at the conference meet last season. The goal for this season is to move up a spot in the conference standings and to continue to improve on last season’s finish. “The further we get into this transition to Division I, the more appealing it is for recruits to look at us,” Erickson said. Besides making strides in the pool, SDSU had six swimmers — Garrigues, Justin Manning, Kyle Milleman, Brad Peters, Roberts, and Chad Thomsen — recognized by the Mid-Con as members of the academic all-conference team last season. To prepare for the 2007-08 season, the Jackrabbits have been lifting weights three times a week along with time in the pool. As the season opener Oct. 26 against the University of South Dakota gets closer, lifting has been cut to two days a week and two-a-day swimming practice has started. The Jackrabbit men’s schedule also includes competition at the Minnesota Invitational, where they placed ninth as a team last year. The Jackrabbits will also face some of the same competitors from years past, including the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and St. Louis (Mo). The men will finish the season in Rochester, Mich., at the Summit League Championships Feb. 21-23. Erickson is entering his 32nd season as the head coach of the swimming and diving teams for SDSU.

Both the men’s and women’s teams have started two-a-day practices three times a week recently along with reducing the days in SDSU’s women’s swimming and diving team is young, but still the weight room from three to two. They have split the practices into has enough experience to be one of the top teams in the Summit specialized groups working on the swimmers’ events instead of a League this season. With 19 of the 24 women on the roster either freshmen or soph- group practice. Sophomore Christina Gerometta has shown improvement and is omores, senior Chelsea Colborn and junior Mallory Onisk will be counted on to be leaders because of their experience. Onisk has her having a “fantastic” fall practice so far, according to Erickson. The Jackrabbits have set 18 school records the last two seasons, name on eight school records while Colborn is the only senior on including a memorable second-place finish in the 400 medley relay this year’s team. at last season’s Mid-Con Championships.Tschetter, Onisk and sophCoach Brad Erickson said that even though the team is young, omore Rachel Musser all return from that team. having a year more of experience should pay off at the end of the Erickson doesn’t know how long the team can keep up that season. “Having more experience with college life and balancing the aca- record-setting pace, but with good athletes coming in every year records should continue to fall. demic and athletic side will make a difference this year,” Erickson Newcomers who are expected to contribute this season include said. Cassie Kozar, a backstroker from British Columbia, Canada, and Sophomore Emily Tschetter is back and will try to continue her assault on the record books. During her freshman season,Tschetter Alexandra Hoffman, a transfer from Minnesota, who will primarily compete in the 100 and 200 backstroke, where she could be near set school records in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, and 400 individual medley, all of which were at the Mid-Continent the top in conference. Alaskan freshmen Amanda Jones and Julia Dicostanzo will also be looked at to make an early impact. Jones Conference Championships. will be one of the best on the team in the freestyle and butterfly, while Dicostanzo is a sprinter who broke the state record in the 200 medley last season. April Peterson from Thief River Falls, Minn., is also strong in individual medleys and lettered six times in high school. Two other swimmers who will be important additions to the team will be freshmen Jennifer Daniels and Rebecca Hempel. Sasha Porter will be the only diver on the women’s team this season. Graduate assistant Amy Bouy, who was a national qualifier in college at Nebraska, will coach the divers, giving them more one-on-one teaching. This allows Erickson to have more time to coach the swimmers and allows the divers to be coached by a former diver to perfect their technique. Erickson expects some diving records that have been standing for many decades to fall this year. The schedule is challenging since there is only one home meet — Oct. 27 versus Iowa State. The travel schedule does take a toll, but the younger swimmers now know what to expect and how to handle the travel throughout the year, Erickson said. In competition, the Jackrabbits will be headed back to the Minnesota Challenge, which will focus on individual swimming times, as well as the Husker Invitational. The Jacks will also be facing some of the same dual opponents as in previous seasons, including Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Nebraska, St. Louis University, and Wisconsin-Green Bay. The SDSU women’s swimming and diving team will finish the season in Rochester, Mich., at the Summit League Championships Feb. 21-23.

Now in its 26th year as an NCAA Division I athletics conference,The Summit League is in its first year under that name. In May 2007, the Presidents Council embraced the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all its student-athletes. Included in the plan was the creation of a new image of the conference and the unveiling of a new name. The Summit League is the third name the conference has held as an NCAA-sanctioned league. The Summit League’s current member schools are Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. The member schools pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports, which include: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. Following is a review of The Summit League’s highlights over the past 25 years: 1982-83 The Association of Mid-Continent Universities is founded with “Frosty” Ferzacca as first commissioner. The initial AMCU line-up includes Cleveland State, Eastern Illinois, Illinois-Chicago, Northern Iowa, SW Missouri State,Valparaiso, Western Illinois and Wisconsin-Green Bay.

1983-84 UW-Green Bay and Eastern Illinois each play in the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament, making them the league’s first NCAA Tourney teams in any sport. 1985-86 Cleveland State earns the AMCU’s first national recognition in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, upsetting No. 3 seed Indiana on their way to a Sweet 16 appearance. Southwest Missouri State begins a string of five consecutive postseason appearances by reaching the quarterfinals of the NIT.

Eastern Illinois’ Jim Maton is the league’s first NCAA national champion, winning the 800-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Track Championship. The AMCU sends two teams to men’s basketball postseason play for the third straight season. 1989-90 The AMCU sends a conference-record three teams to postseason play in men’s basketball, including Northern Iowa, which upsets third-seeded Missouri in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The AMCU changes its name to the MidContinent Conference. 1991-92 The league announces that it will begin sponsoring women’s athletics – strengthened by the membership of seven former North Star Conference members – the following year with the debut of six championship sports. Eastern Illinois’ Dan Steele wins the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. 1992-93 UW-Milwaukee wins the first Mid-Con-sponsored women’s championship when it takes home the cross country crown. Six schools depart the Mid-Con at the conclusion of the season. 1994-95 The conference adds Buffalo, Central Connecticut State, Chicago State, UMKC, Northeastern Illinois and Troy State. Jon Steinbrecher begins a league-record nineyear tenure at the Mid-Con helm when he replaces Ippoliti as commissioner. Valparaiso begins a string of five straight regular-season titles and six consecutive Mid-Con Tournament titles in men’s basketball. 1995-96 Charter member Eastern Illinois departs the Mid-Con, but not until after winning its ninth men’s outdoor track and field title.

•South Dakota State University• With a record enrollment of 11,706 students in the fall of 2007, South Dakota State University is the state’s largest institution of higher education. Today, students from all 50 states and more than 40 countries attend SDSU. More than 67,000 degrees have been granted since the college was chartered in 1881. EARLY HISTORY Located in Brookings, SDSU was authorized in 1881 by the Territorial Legislative Assembly and serves as the state’s land-grant institution.Territorial Council member John O’Brien Scobey, failing to obtain the penitentiary for Brookings, managed to secure Dakota Agricultural College for his city. Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school was able to open in the fall of 1884 because the president, George Lilley, was willing to advance $500 — onethird of his salary — to finish three rooms in the new Central Building. COLLEGES ESTABLISHED The structure of the college became more complex as enrollments increased. The first nine chairs of instruction established in 1884 included agriculture, science, mathematics, English, modern languages, military tactics, veterinary science, practical business, political and domestic economy, and music. By 1907, the year the name of the institution was changed to South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, there were 22 departments on campus. In 1964, when “State College” was renamed South Dakota State University, there
were six colleges; today degrees are offered through these eight colleges: • Agricultural and Biological Sciences • Arts and Science • Education and Counseling • Engineering • Family and Consumer Sciences • General Registration • Nursing • Pharmacy • Graduate School SDSU also offers degree programs through the University Center in Sioux Falls. Evening, RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses are
coordinated through the Office of Academic Affairs and Outreach. SDSU BY THE NUMBERS In its 126-year history, South Dakota State has grown from a campus of 80 acres in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities worth more than $380 million. The University owns or leases another 15,000 acres for research throughout the state. A University Student Union expansion and renovation project was completed in the summer of 2005, as was Caldwell Hall, a suite-style residence hall. Other recent building projects have included: • Anson and Ada May Yeager Hall (formerly the Printing and Journalism Building), which underwent a $2.1 million expansion and renovation project; • Crothers Engineering Hall — $7 million expansion; • Solberg Hall — multi-million dollar renovation; • Performing Arts Center — $9 million project completed in fall of 2002. In addition, the Enterprise Institute building, which also houses the SDSU Foundation, was completed in the fall of 2004.The Enterprise Institute is designed to facilitate SDSU and industry resources to encourage and assist the
31
•South Dakota State University• establishment of entrepreneurial growth enterprises in the region. Several other building projects are under way or in the planning stages, including: • A $48 million, 144,000-square-foot Integrated Sciences Complex; • Harding Hall South, a 30,000-square-foot building that will house an expansion within the College of Engineering; • A $3.6 million equestrian center; and • A $12 million campus wellness center. More than 200 majors, minors and options (see listing on pages 33-34) are available at SDSU with more than 2,500 different course offerings. Master’s degrees are offered in more than 30 areas and doctorates are available in eight fields. SDSU is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and numerous departments on campus have earned accreditation from various agencies. More than 2,000 people are employees of SDSU, and the University’s total operating budget was more than $195 million in Fiscal Year 2007. Supplementing classroom instruction are the Harding Distinguished Lecture Series, the F.O. Butler Lectures, the Lusk Lecture and the Amdahl, Schultz-Werth and Griffiths endowments. Students also have the opportunity to choose from more than 200 clubs and organizations active on campus. RESEARCH SDSU has the highest percentage of undergraduates involved in research of any South Dakota public university. SDSU is large enough to offer competitive research opportunities, yet small enough to foster student-faculty learning opportunities.

In 2006, SDSU was recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as the state’s only RU/H (research university/high research activity) institution. This prestigious ranking recognizes the growth of doctoral programs, degrees granted and competitive funds obtained. Major areas of research at SDSU include: • Engineering and technology research into photovoltaic devices, nanotechnology, materials science, wind power, surface transportation systems, signal and image processing, water treatment, computer sciences, software engineering and computational science and statistics. • Agricultural sciences research on crops, livestock and the spectrum of related issues, such as agricultural biotechnology, infectious diseases (animal and zoonotic), food manufacturing, bio-based energy and products, economics and horticulture. • Management and conservation of natural resources, with research on soil and water quality, soil fertility, conservation farming practices, wildlife and fisheries, climate change, landscape ecology and livestock waste.
• Health sciences, nutritional sciences and wellness research programs in pharmaceutical sciences, nutrition and exercise physiology, muscle-bone relationships, cancer prevention, nursing and infectious disesases. • Renewable energy research is developing bio-based energy technologies, while promoting diversification and environmental sustainability of America’s agriculture. SDSU has been selected as one of five universities to serve as a regional center for the Sun Grant Initiative. The Sun Grant Initiative is a concept to solve America’s energy needs and revitalize rural communities with Land-Grant university research, education and Extension programs on renewable energy and bio-based non-food industries. The Sun Grant Initiative will involve several SDSU departments, including mechanical engineering, biology and microbiology, the Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence, nutrition and food sciences, chemistry and plant science. • The Economics Department is studying the economic impact of ethanol development on the state’s economy and the logistics of using biomass for producing renewable fuels. • Over the next five years, $69 million in federal funds is to be awarded to SDSU and six other universities to serve as Vanguard centers for the National Children’s Study. The NCS will study more than 100,000 children across the country from conception to age 21. As part of the Governor’s 2010 Initiative, a goal is for South Dakota to become a recognized leader in research and technology development. To realize this goal, SDSU faculty are involved in five research centers: • Center for Infectious Disease Research and Vaccinology
•South Dakota State University• • Center for Bioprocessing Research and Development • Center for Drought Tolerance Biotechnology • Center for Accelerated Applications at the Nanoscale • Center for the Research and Development of Light-Activated Materials An agreement between SDSU and Argonne National Laboratory will develop opportunities for SDSU faculty and students working in partnership to pursue fields of science that advance science and technology-driven economic development in South Dakota. MUSEUMS AND ATTRACTIONS The educational opportunities don’t end in the classroom or laboratory as South Dakota State University is home to several facilities, including museums and gardens, which highlight South Dakota history and heritage. The South Dakota Art Museum houses several collections, including early Sioux Indian tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The State Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum, located south and east of campus, provide a beautiful setting for area residents and tourists to enjoy a stroll through
the radiant colors and fragrances of one of the top 10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. It is also recognized as an All-American Display Garden, one of only 13 in the nation. In 1993, McCrory Gardens was designated an All-American Judging Garden to conduct research on annual flowers. In 1982, the area north of the formal garden was dedicated to the planting and testing of ornamental trees and shrubs. The 45-acre site was designated the South Dakota State Arboretum in 1988. Perhaps South Dakota State’s most recognizable landmark is the 165-foot Coughlin Campanile, the state’s largest chimes tower. A climb of 179 steps leads to a panoramic view of the city. The statuesque structure on the west end of campus was a $65,000 gift from 1909 engineering graduate Charles Coughlin, who later went on to become head of the Briggs & Stratton Corporation. Coughlin laid the campanile’s cornerstone on June 10, 1929. Since then, its chimes have called students to classes with the famous Westminster peals. An alumni-sponsored project to restore the campanile was completed in the summer of 2001. Adjacent to the campanile, Coolidge-Sylvan Theatre has provided a restful, green haven for students since its dedication by President Calvin Coolidge in September 1927.
Over the years the outdoor amphiteater has been the site of concerts, graduations and inaugurations for university presidents. Woodbine Cottage, the home of the university president, is a charming example of Queen Anne architecture. Built in 1887 by South Dakota Agricultural College’s second president, Dr. Lewis McLouth, the home is crowned by multiple roof lines. The house also has served as a women’s dormitory, music hall and infirmary. STATE’S LARGEST LIBRARY The Hilton M. Briggs Library, the state’s largest, was opened in 1977 and joined South Dakota’s statewide automated library network in 1988.Through the library, users have access to holdings from all 10 of the state’s libraries, including official documents and more than 1 million other holdings at Briggs. THE BROOKINGS COMMUNITY Today, Brookings is a growing community of about 18,700 people. Located 20 miles west of the Minnesota border and 50 miles north of Sioux Falls in east-central South Dakota, Brookings is situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29. The community also is home to several recognizable companies including Rainbow Play Systems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), Larson Manufacturing, and Daktronics, a leading manufacturer of scoreboards and display systems.

Vision, Mission and Values of the SDSU Athletic Department Every undertaking of South Dakota State University is driven by a common force — a relentless commitment to excellence. Within the Athletic Department, excellence is measured by much more than wins and losses. We are committed to providing each and every student-athlete with a comprehensive collegiate experience that is second to none. Every decision that guides our program is made with the student-athlete in mind. Is Athletic Achievement important? Yes, because it is the fundamental purpose of the student-athlete experience. Is Social Responsibility a vital component? Yes, we expect to contribute to the well-being of our campus, community, and state. How about Positive Student-Athlete Experiences and Competitive Success? Those also define our program because they are integral to the student athlete’s growth. That is what it means to be studentcentered, and why our vision is:
VISION: To be a premier student-centered collegiate athletic program. How will SDSU Athletics achieve that vision? By working tirelessly to create a special place where student-athletes who share our drive and determination can develop life skills that lead not only to athletic success, but pave the way for victories long into their lives. The important work of creating that setting is the heart of our mission:
MISSION: To passionately and relentlessly create an environment, rooted in sportsmanship and ethical conduct, where motivated student-athletes can develop into lifelong champions. To be a lifelong champion, one must maintain a discipline of taking the highest road. Similarly, SDSU is guided by a stringent value set that will not be compromised:
VALUES: Honesty, equity, academic integrity, fiscal integrity and social responsibility with the expectation of competing at the highest level.
