2015 Preview

Goalkeepers Last season, Elisa Stamatakis and Nicole Inskeep split goalkeeping duties, each recording a 5-4-1 record. With Stamatakis lost to graduation, Inskeep will assume full-time starting duties, which she held as a freshman. Wedemeyer expects Inskeep’s 2015 to be like her 2013. That season, she tied Kat Donovan’s single-season record with 11 shutouts and also posted the third-lowest GAA (0.75) and fourth-most wins (11) in school history.

Junior Nicole Inskeep

Defenders In 2013, South Dakota State was one of the top defensive teams in the Summit League, opening league play with a five-game shutout streak and posting 11 overall. For their efforts, Dani Patterson was named to the all-Summit League first team while Ashley Adams and McKenzie Wolf earned freshman team nods. Last season, the Jackrabbits netted their most goals (33) since 2010. But that offensive outburst came at a cost, as they allowed 32 goals, 18 more than they did in 2013 and their most since 2005. “I want the team as a whole to be more consistent defensively this season,” Wedemeyer said. “Last year, our defense dipped a little bit, but our attack picked us up. We hope to be able to put the two together this season.” Seniors Patterson, Katie McNeary and Delaney Ratcliffe are expected to anchor the backline again this season. In 2014, they were three of five Jackrabbits to log more than 1,500 minutes. Adams and Wolf, who lost the 2014 campaign to injury, will vie for the fourth defensive spot while newcomers Kyi Nelson, Annie Williams and Kelsi Wipf will provide much needed depth. #RabbitsFutbol

2015 Preview

Forwards

After a record-breaking junior campaign that saw her take home Summit League Offensive Player of the Year honors, Diana Potterveld enters her senior season with the chance to climb into the top five in all three major offensive categories in South Dakota State history. Potterveld, who set the single-season school record with 12 assists last season, currently ranks sixth in career points (51) and eighth in career goals (17). With 17 career assists, she needs just two to set a new Jackrabbit record. “Diana is the epitome of what every coach wants in a student-athlete,” Wedemeyer said. “Not only is she a great leader, she’s a terrific person and excels in the classroom. On the field, she will be a key player for us this season.” The Jackrabbits also return Shelby Raper (5g-3a) and Nicole Hatcher (4g-4a), who ranked third and fourth on the team in scoring last season. Hatcher, who missed five games due to an early-season injury, totaled nine of her 12 points in Summit League play and also netted the game-tying goal in the last 31 seconds of the tournament finals Senior Diana Potterveld against Denver.

Midfielders The Jackrabbits boast considerable depth and talent at midfield. South Dakota State returns 2014 leading goal-scorer Alyssa Brazil and Summit League Tournament MVP Tori Poole as well as solid role players like Madison Yueill, Jennie Scislow and Lauren Kressock. Last season, Brazil led the team in goals (7) and game-winning goals (2) and ranked second in points (16). Brazil enters her senior season ranked tenth in South Dakota State history in career goals (15). With 34 career points, she needs just five to enter the top 10. Poole, who was also an NSCAA Great Lakes Third-Team All-Region honoree, will look to build on a memorable freshman campaign. Poole, who quietly totaled 11 points while playing defensive midfield, burst into the spotlight by netting the game-winning goal in the shootout of the Summit League Tournament finals, sending the Jackrabbits to their second NCAA Tournament in program history.

Non-Conference Schedule South Dakota State’s non-conference schedule features two opponents from the Big 12, one from the Big Ten and two from the Missouri Valley Conference. The Jackrabbits will play seven of their 11 non-conference matches on the road. “We have a very demanding schedule this year that includes some of the best teams in the Midwest,” Wedemeyer said. “We try and play the toughest nonconference schedule we can to test our team and prepare us for the Summit League play in October.” Highlights of the non-conference schedule include a home match against Iowa State (Aug. 21) and away tilts with Iowa (Aug. 28) and Kansas (Sept. 25). The Jackrabbits also attend the Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. Sept. 11-13.

Summit League Schedule Last year, five points separated the top six teams in the Summit League. Wedemeyer expects the race to make the tournament will be even tighter this year. “The Summit League will be tougher than ever,” Wedemeyer said. “Many of the teams last fall were quite young and have gained a lot of experience. Everyone will be much improved.” Wedemeyer highlighted 2013 regular-season and tournament champion Denver as one of the teams to beat in 2015. “Denver is always very good,” Wedemeyer said. “They were very young last year and in a bit of a rebuilding year. They’ll be a challenge now that they have another year of experience under their belt.” A highlight of the Summit League schedule will be when South Dakota State host rivals South Dakota and North Dakota State during the same weekend. The Jackrabbits will square off against the Coyotes Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. and the Bison Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.

Jackrabbit Facilities Fishback Soccer Park The Jackrabbits play their home games at Fishback Soccer Park, which is roughly a 10-minute drive from campus. It has a 120-yard by 75-yard natural grass pitch with lights, stands that can seat about 500 fans, a two-story media box, locker rooms and a concession area. The playing surface is considered one of the best in the upper Midwest. Practice Soccer Field SDSU maintains a training facility on campus. It contains a 120-yard by 75-yard natural grass field with underground irrigation and grass that matches the playing surface at Fishback Soccer Park. It also features a goalkeeper training station and an agility and fitness area adjacent to the field. Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex The Sanford-Jackrabbit Complex opened fall of 2014 after just over a year of construction. The multi-use facility features an indoor practice and competition space of more than 149,000 square feet and a human performance area of almost 15,000 square feet. It will house one of the only eight-lane, 300-meter tracks in the region, along with 100 yards of soy-based synthetic turf. Ground was broken in August 2013. The final beam was raised in March 2014, and the turf was installed in July. Fund-raising efforts kicked off in the summer of 2012, with leadership gifts from the Dale and Pat Larson family, First Bank & Trust, Sanford Health, Larson Manufacturing, Brookings Health System and other anonymous donors helping to make this program-changing facility a reality. Athletics Director Justin Sell said that the facility supports the athletic department's mission to develop lifelong champions and will have a positive impact on the university for decades to come. "The Indoor Practice and Human Performance Facility will have the greatest impact on our student-athletes. It is a game-changing opportunity to build a facility that will benefit the university for the next 50 years," Sell said. "The demands put on student-athletes today create the need for high-quality practice and support facilities that allow our student-athletes the opportunity to compete and excel at the highest levels."

Lang Wedemeyer has become synonymous with women’s soccer at South Dakota State. Entering his 16th year at the helm of the program he built, Wedemeyer will try to guide his talented, veteran team to a second-straight Summit League Tournament championship. Last season, SDSU captured its second Summit LeagueTournament Championship crown in dramatic fashion, topping Denver, 5-4, in penalty kicks. Tori Poole, who became the first freshman to be named Tournament MVP in Summit League history, sealed the victory for the Jackrabbits, sending them to their second NCAA College Cup. South Dakota State also won its fourth regular season title by posting a 5-21 record. Against Oral Roberts Oct. 12, Wedemeyer secured his 100th career Division I victory as the his Jackrabbits blanked the Golden Eagles, 3-0. Wedemeyer returns 11 starters, including reining Summit League Offensive Player of the Year Diana Potterveld and leading goal scorer Alyssa Brazil. He also returns a formidable back line in Delaney Ratcliffe, Dani Patterson, Katie McNeary and Ashley Adams. South Dakota State’s experience in big games could prove pivotal in making the 2015 campaign as memorable as 2014.

From The Ground Up In 2000, Wedemeyer launched a Division II women’s soccer program at SDSU with a roster of 19 players, just six of whom had previous collegiate experience. The roster also included six freshmen and four women who had played club soccer at SDSU in 1999. The roster was put together in just six months before the team took the field. SDSU posted a 5-12-0 record in its inaugural season. The team went 1-8-0 in the North Central Conference.

Building a Winning Tradition SDSU did not have to wait long for its women’s soccer team to start racking up wins, titles and honors under Wedemeyer’s watch. In just 14 years, Wedemeyer built a Division II soccer program from scratch and led his team through its transition to Division I play. In their fifth season at the DI level, the Jackrabbits earned their first trip to the NCAA tournament. There, they recorded their first NCAA postseason victory, a 1-0 upset of No. 14 Colorado. Since then, SDSU has reached the double digits in wins four of the past five seasons and missed the postseason just once.

SDSU Makes Transition to Division I When South Dakota State decided to take its athletic department to the Division I level, Wedemeyer was left with the unenviable task of recruiting players into a program that was not eligible for the NCAA postseason and did not have a conference affiliation. Wedemeyer accepted the challenge even though it came with low points. The program returned to where it was three years earlier, posting a 5-11-1 record during its first season at the DI level in 2004. The season, the Jackrabbits faced 11 DI opponents. On Sept. 12, they earned their first DI win, defeating

Youth Lead SDSU to Postseason Berth The following season, Wedemeyer welcomed a freshman class of 14 to SDSU. Even though they were young and relatively inexperienced, the Jackrabbits posted their first winning season en route to earning their first berth in the NCC’s four-team tournament. For his efforts, Wedemeyer was named the 2001 NCC Coach of the Year. In 2003, Wedemeyer had his first player earn AllAmerican honors. Senior Erin Miller posted a .915 save percentage and a 0.51 GAA, program records that still stand to this day. For her efforts, Miller was named the NCC Player of the Year and was honored as a second-team All-American.

Western Illinois, 2-0, at the Diadora Classic in Omaha, Neb. In 2005, the Jackrabbits endured another fivewin season but made positive strides, recording wins over DI foes Northern Iowa, Montana and Murray State and holding Big Ten member Minnesota scoreless on Sept. 11. Wedemeyer Leads Jacks to First Title SDSU joined the United Soccer Conference for its 2006 campaign. Through their first five games, the Jackrabbits posted a 3-1-1 record. But the team went 0-7-1 in its next eight games, scoring just one goal over that stretch. Four of those losses were by scores of 1-0. The Jackrabbits did not lose confidence in themselves and ran off a 5-1-1 record to close the season. In the USC tournament, goalkeepers Nicole Lograsso and Jenn Davis combined for three straight shutouts to lead the Jackrabbits to their first conference tournament title at any level. NCAA College Cup Contender The 2007 season marked the first year for SDSU as a member of The Summit League. In 2008, the Jackrabbits became a full Division I member, meaning they were finally eligible for NCAA postseason competition. And, in its first season of eligibility, Wedemeyer put his team in position to earn its first NCAA tournament berth. After winning the Summit League regular season title with a 7-1-0 record, the Jackrabbits won the conference tournament, earning them a trip to the NCAA College Cup. In the first round, Wedemeyer’s team pulled off its biggest upset in program history, taking down No. 14, fourth-seeded Colorado, 1-0. The win generated national attention and buzz throughout South Dakota, culminating in Wedemeyer being tabbed as the Soccerbuzz.com runner-up coach of the year and the South Dakota Sports Writers Women’s College Coach of the Year. That season, Wedemeyer coached six Summit League all-conference selections, two all-newcomer team members, the Summit League’s Defensive Player of the Year and an Academic All-American.

Outside of South Dakota State Wedemeyer’s involvement in soccer is not limited to SDSU. He serves as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America National Staff Coach and has traveled the country conducting coaching certification and running clinics over the past ten years. Legend of the Jackrabbit

There are two theories as to how and why the Jackrabbit nickname evolved. The most common belief is that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College, as the university was then known. A reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, was believed to have written that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname is given in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. There is a poem in the 1907 yearbook that puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, school athletic teams were known as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.

WELCOME TO SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY South Dakota State University is the state’s Morrill Act land-grant university and its largest, most comprehensive institution of higher education. It has an enrollment of 12,554 students from all 50 states and 70 countries who can choose from more than 175 majors, minors and specializations. The institution also offers 29 master’s degree programs, 13 Ph.D. and two professional programs. SDSU has grown from 80 acres at its founding in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities valued at more than $381 million. The university owns or leases another 15,000 acres of land for research throughout the state. The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement that improve the quality of life in South Dakota, the region, the nation and the world. SDSU confers degrees through six colleges: Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Sciences, the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, Nursing and Pharmacy, as well as the Graduate School. Qualified students may enroll in the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College. The Office of Continuing and Distance Education facilitates distance delivery of credit and noncredit programming, and University Centers in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City offer degree programs and student support services comparable to those offered on the Brookings campus. SDSU Extension and the Agricultural Experiment Station reach all parts of the state. PROGRESSIVE

EXCELLENCE The South Dakota State University campus has seen numerous building projects the past 10 past years. And it is not slowing. Currently under construction are the Architecture, Mathematics and Engineering Building, the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex and an updated Medary Commons. The Architecture, Mathematics and Engineering Building will become home for several of the most dynamic programs on campus including: • Center for Financial Analytics, • Center for Statistics and Biometrics, • Center for Computational Science, • Senior Design Lab for Mechanical Engineering, and • Engineering Resource Center. Construction of that 60,000-square-foot, $17 million project started in fall 2013 after the summer was spent cleaning and then demolishing Solberg Annex and the Industrial Arts Building. The new building’s footprint also extends to the parking lot north of those structures. Completion is set for early 2015 with most of the moving to occur in spring and summer 2015. The first floor will be home to the mechanical engineering prototyping and design labs and construction and operations management departments as well as shared lab space with architecture. The mathematics and statistics department will be on the second floor while the third floor will house the architecture department. The Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex is a multi-purpose indoor competition and training facility currently under construction at South Dakota State University. The project, which will cost an estimated $32 million, is scheduled to be completed this fall. The facility will include an eight-lane, 300-meter track and 100 yards of synthetic turf, along with space for sports medicine, athletic training, strength and conditioning, physical therapy, hydrotherapy, observation rooms and office facilities. The building formerly known as Medary Commons will be renamed the Enrollment Services Center. The following offices will be relocating to that site: enrollment services, admissions, financial aid, records and registration, and scholarships.

The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central accredits SDSU, while numerous departments on campus hold accreditation from various other agencies.

INNOVATIVE The Innovation Campus at South Dakota State University marks the state’s first and only university-affiliated research park. Located on 125 acres just east of campus, it provides an environment that fosters partnerships among the University, business, government and the community to grow the sciences and technology-based economy. SDSU is building a future for South Dakota, the nation and the globe. The primary charge of the land-grant mission is to create opportunities for the state through research and education. Research has been a vital part of SDSU since 1887 with the creation of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. Since that time, SDSU has been the reliable resource for research-based information and community leadership. Today, research provides a solid knowledge base for economic development, SDSU’s academic programs, and experiential opportunities for students. In the spring 2013, South Dakota State University officials rolled out IMPACT 2018: A Strategic Vision for South Dakota State University. The five-year plan features four main goals: • Promote academic excellence through quality programs, engaged learners and an innovatie teaching and learning environment; • Generate new knowledge, encourage innovations and promote artistic and creative works that contribute to the public good and result in social, cultureal or economic development for South Dakota, the region, the nation and the world; • Extend the reach and depth fo the University by developing strategic programs and collaborations, and • Secure human and fiscal resources to ensure high performance through enhanced financial, management and governance systems.

Administration David Chicoine

President, South Dakota State University South Dakota State University, ‘69 David L. Chicoine, Ph.D., has served as the 19th president of South Dakota State University since Jan. 1, 2007, when he became the third alumnus to lead the state’s largest institution of higher education. President Chicoine, who graduated in 1969 with a bachelor of science degree in agribusiness, also holds an appointment as professor in the Department of Economics. President Chicoine has a long association with intercollegiate athletics, including serving on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. Chicoine also chaired the President’s Council for The Summit League — SDSU’s conference home for 18 of its 21 varsity sports — during the 201112 academic year. Previously, he served as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee for the Big Ten Conference for nine years of his 11-year term. In the spring of 2013, Chicoine and his executive team rolled out IMPACT 2018: A Strategic Vision for South Dakota State University. The five-year plan features four main goals: academic excellence, research and innovation, outreach and becoming a high-performing University. During his tenure, enrollment has reached record levels of undergraduate students and Ph.D. candidates. Correspondingly, the amount of research grants and contract awards has jumped nearly 90 percent during that time. To support the strategic plan, the SDSU Foundation in 2008 launched an aggressive comprehensive fund-raising effort — “It Starts with State: A Campaign for South Dakota State University.” The capital campaign began with a goal of $200 million, but far exceeded that to a total of more than $255 million with contributions from more than 23,000 donors. The most visible support for the campaign can be seen in several construction and renovation projects funded primarily by generous donors, all part of the largest campus building boom since the 1960s.The majority of the facilities enhance the university’s research capabilities and allow for new discoveries that drive technology-based economic development in South Dakota. In January 2014, Chicoine was presented with the 2013-14 Chief Executive Leadership Award by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VI. The award recognizes the leadership of a higher education chief executive officer who demonstrates the ability to create a vision and inspire others.

62

Building a better academic model has also been part of President Chicoine’s agenda. In the fall of 2010, SDSU launched the state’s first architecture program through its College of Arts and Sciences. The Chicoine administration also developed the new College of Education and Human Sciences in 2009, a merger of the former College of Education and Counseling, College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Department of Health and Physical Education. It represented the first significant academic restructuring in more than 40 years. Dr. Chicoine brought more than 30 years of experience in higher education with the University of Illinois to his role as president of SDSU. A nationally recognized economist, specializing in public finance, taxation, and rural economics, Chicoine served as an advisor to the Illinois General Assembly. His higher education administrative experience includes service as Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Dean of the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, at the University of Illinois. The co-author of four books and author of more than 100 invited and/or peer reviewed academic journal articles, Chicoine also served as a member of the Illinois Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, and was a member of the board of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Technology Development Fund. Chicoine received an M.S. in agricultural economics from the University of Delaware in 1971, and completed an M.A. in economics at Western Illinois University. In 1979, he completed his Ph.D. in agricultural economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The president and his wife, Marcia, live in Woodbine Cottage on the SDSU campus. Their family includes son, Joshua, a Chicago-based musician; daughter-in-law Laura Ellsworth; granddaughter Sylvie; grandson Watson, and their late son, Jason.

Administration Justin Sell

Director of Athletics, South Dakota State University Bowling Green University, ‘91

Justin Sell, who was honored as a recipient of the 2014-15 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year Award, has moved Jackrabbit Athletics forward in a number of areas of its Division I pursuits since being introduced as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University on May 7, 2009.

Sell also has implemented other aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which have resulted in record average attendance for football during the 2009 season, as well as the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club.Ticket sales totaled more than $1 million for the first time during the 2011-12 academic year, and was surpassed again during the 2012-13 and 201314 seasons. In addition, the Jackrabbit Athletic Scholarship Auction raised a record $603,000 in April 2015.

At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Under his leadership, Jackrabbit Athletics has continually made strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in reconnecting with alumni.

On the facilities front, Sell has overseen dramatic upgrades and expansion of competition and practice venues through development and implementation of the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center was completed in 2010, and Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, as well as other recent improvements to the home of Jackrabbit baseball.

Athletically, the Jackrabbits have claimed 22 regular and postseason league championships in six different sports since 2009-10. That broad-based success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy four times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15), along with winning both the Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13 season and was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 2010-11 campaign.

More recently, construction of the $32 million Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex was completed in the fall of 2014.The facility, which serves as a competition venue for indoor track and field and as a practice facility for football and a number of other outdoor sports, contains one of only a handful of 300-meter indoor tracks in the country, as well as expanded facilities for sports medicine and strength and conditioning.

In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes continually post a gradepoint average of 3.2 or higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 2012-13 academic years, and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in all six years in the league (2008-13). In January of 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU Athletics. Learfield Sports directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights. Additionally, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting current student-athletes at South Dakota State.

In addition, work is under way for the construction of the $65 million Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, which will serve as the new home of Jackrabbit football. The 19,000-seat stadium is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016. In the fall of 2014, Sell was appointed by the NCAA Board of Directors to represent The Summit League and Missouri Valley Football Conference on the newly formed Division I Council. Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. In the Brookings community, where Sell lives with his wife, Jennie, and their four children: Abbie, Zach, Josh and Eric, he serves as vice president of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce, vice president for the Brookings Friends of Baseball and is a member of the Brookings Health System Board of Trustees. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992.
