THE NCEA
History of the NCEA
In 1998, equestrian was identified and adopted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Committee on Women’s Athletics (CWA) as an emerging sport for women at the Division I and II levels. Division III initially adopted it as an emerging sport but later rescinded their decision. Currently there are 16 Division I, five Division II and one Division III programs sponsoring equestrian. The National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA), a non-profit corporation, was created as a governing body to advance the sport of equestrian. The NCEA is responsible for the development and administration of equestrian rules and guidelines. Equestrian is subject to all NCAA policies and procedures in the same manner as other sports. The NCEA developed sub-committees for areas critical to the advancement of equestrian. These sub-committees consist of coaches and administrators from member institutions. Coaches and administrators are invited to serve on any of the various NCEA Committees of their choice. The committees include but are not limited to: Emerging Sports, Competition, Promotions, Sponsorship, Selection, and Championship. Each committee is charged with helping to progress equestrian to championship sport status within the NCAA. Additionally, liaisons from the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) interact with and provide input to these committees and the NCEA Executive Committee. Beginning in 2014, the NCEA began crowning only one overall national champion.
Mission Statement of the NCEA
The NCEA, in concert with the mission and vision of the NCAA, is committed to providing collegiate opportunities for female equestrian student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while embracing equity, diversity and promoting academic and competitive excellence.
Vision Statement of the NCEA
To be recognized globally as the premier level of competition for elite female collegiate equestrian student-athletes.

COMPETITION FORMAT & GLOSSARY
Dual Meet Format The National Collegiate Equestrian Association tests five riders from each team in head-to-head competitions. Five horses are selected for each event. Each rider is paired with one of the five horses in a random draw before the competition. The rider is able to watch the horse warm up and receives four minutes to practice on her assigned mount before competing. Riders from opposing teams compete on the same horse in the head-to-head competition. Each rider receives a score and the rider with the highest score receives one point for her team. In NCEA competition, the level of difficulty is demonstrated by the accuracy of the pattern and how the competitor uses the horse that she draws to the best of her ability. General Scoring Hunt Seat riders are scored on a scale of 1-100. There are nine maneuvers each worth 10 points, plus an overall score worth 10 points, to total 100 possible points per ride. Maneuvers are scored on this scale: 10=Excellent; 9=Very Good; 8=Good; 7=Fairly Good; 6=Satisfactory; 5=Sufficient; 4=Insufficient; 3=Fairly Bad; 2=Bad; 1=Very Bad; 0=Not Executed. Scores usually range from 70-85, depending on the judge. Western riders are scored on a 70-point scale. There are a minimum of eight maneuvers which are scored on the following scale: +1.5=Excellent, +1=Very Good, +.5=Good, 0=Correct, -.5=Poor, -1=Very Poor, -1.5=Extremely Poor. Scores range from 68 to 74. Horsemanship and English Equitation riders are judged on their ability to control and show the horse while maintaining the correct riding position. Riders in Equitation Over Fences are judged on their ability to position the horse correctly and not interfere with its balance while maintaining the correct riding position for a smooth, polished performance. Reiners are judged for precision and application of natural aids as they execute intricate maneuvers at varying speeds. Hunt Seat Equitation Over Fences The judges evaluate the rider’s position, consistency on course, smoothness, flow from jump to jump, the number of strides (steps taken by the horse) in a line and the rider’s plan to complete the course. Scoring for the event is out of a perfect score of 100. Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat The riders have to perform a flat test on their horses in a 40 x 20 meter arena. The test consists of nine movements to be judged on accuracy, smoothness and overall position of the rider. Each movement receives a score from 1-10. The 10th score judges the position and seat of the rider and the correctness and effectiveness of her aids. The score is out of a perfect score of 100. Western Horsemanship This event is designed to evaluate the rider’s ability to execute a prescribed set of maneuvers with precision and smoothness while maintaining a balanced, functional and fundamentally correct body position. The ideal horsemanship pattern consists of seven to nine maneuvers and is extremely precise with the rider and horse working in complete unison, executing each maneuver with subtle aids and cues. Exhibitors are scored for each sequence of maneuvers with a -1.5 to +1.5 score for each maneuver with a base score beginning at 70. Western Reining This is a class based on set patterns and a precise scoring system. Within these patterns the horses’ and riders’ athletic abilities are tested in a series of maneuvers including spins, stops, flying lead changes and circles with changes in size and speed. In collegiate competition, the rider must perform one of the set National Reining Horse Association (NHRA) patterns. There are a total of eight parts to a reining test with each individual maneuver judged from -1.5 to +1.5 with a base score beginning at 70.
Glossary Aids - A rider communicates to her horse through leg and rein aids. Combination - A series of jumps set one to two strides apart from one another. Course - A predetermined series of 8-12 jumps that must be completed in order without major penalty. Crop - A short whip used in riding, used only as an aid to reinforce the rider’s leg. Diagonals - The correct posting, up/down motion, of the rider in sequence with diagonal movement of the horse’s legs at the trot. Equitation - In riding competitions, this indicates that riders are being judged on their ability to control the horse while maintaining the correct riding position. Riders have the added challenge of riding an unfamiliar horse that they draw in a lottery system just prior to their class. Equitation/Horsemanship - In competitions, these indicate that riders are being judged on their ability to control and show the horse while maintaining the correct riding position. Riders have the added challenge of riding an unfamiliar horse, one that they draw for in a lottery system just before their event. Equitation Over Fences - An individual performance where each rider shows a horse over 8-10 jumps approximately three feet high. Riders are judged on their ability to position the horse correctly at the jumps and avoid interfering with the horse’s balance, while

GLOSSARY CONTINUED
maintaining the correct riding position and producing a smooth, polished performance. Figure Eight - Two circles connected by a change of direction, most often seen in Reining patterns. Gaits - Starting from slowest to fastest, gaits include the walk, jog, trot, lope, cantor and gallop. Riders may be asked to vary each gait by shortening or lengthening the horse’s stride. Halt - The command for stop. Horsemanship - Western riding judged on maintaining correct position and controlling the horse in a pattern. Hunt Seat - The category in which English riders compete in either over a series of jumps or in a general equitation class. Irons - The English stirrups used in riding. Leads - They are determined at the canter/lope by which front foot is leading. Correct leads have the inside foreleg reaching furthest. Lead Change - Done at the canter/lope to change which front foot is leading. Natural Aids - Body signals from the seat, legs, hands and voice to communicate commands to the horse, all the while appearing comfortable, relaxed and balanced. These signals should be subtle or imperceptible to the judge and spectators and exaggerated shifting of the rider’s weight is not desirable. The resulting performance shown by the horse is not to be considered more important than the methods used by the rider in obtaining them. On the Rail - Both riding disciplines - the riders enter the show arena and show collectively at all required gaits on command form the judge. Reining - Western riders perform an assigned pattern from memory, demonstrating a variety of stops, turns and figures at various speeds. The emphasis is on precision and technical application of the rider’s ability to handle unfamiliar horses. Roll Back - A turn performed in equitation over fences to show control of the horse and rider’s ability to maintain a position throughout a turn. In Western reining, a rollback is a 180-degree pivot with speed after a halt. Schooling - Practice time before the classes, is not allowed for intercollegiate competitors. Sliding Stop - A stop in which the horse balances on the back feet while continuing to move the front feet. Stock Seat - The common Western division, where the goal of the rider is to maneuver the horse through a herd of livestock to rope, move or control. Striding - A single coordinated movement of the four legs of a horse or other animal completed when the legs return to their initial relative position. In the hunt seat fence classes, proper striding between two jumps in a line is required. Ex: If you need to have six strides down the diagonal line and five strides on the outside line. Tack - The equipment worn by the horse (saddle, bridle, etc.). Two-Point Position - Performed in practice to learn the proper leg position, balance and strength. The position is done on the flat and requires the body to be positioned forward just out of the saddle. This is the forward position used over fences. Walk, Jog, Lope - In Western, these are the gaits that the horse travels in. Walk, Trot, Canter - In English, these are the gaits that the horse travels in. Warm-Ups - Practice time before the classes, normally 4-5 minutes. The horses will be schooled, or prepared for competition using stretching and suppling exercises at various gaits, or practice jumps if necessary by riders who will not compete the day of the show.

Ellie Wilkins
Head Coach - Fourth Year Evergreen, Colorado Texas A&M, 2014
After serving one season as an assistant coach, Ellie Wilkins took over the South Dakota State equestrian program in July 2015 as the program’s fourth head coach. Wilkins joined the Jackrabbit equestrian staff in September 2014 as the team’s hunt seat coach after competing for four years at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, where she competed on the Aggies 2011 and 2012 NCEA National Championship teams. As her first year as head coach, Wilkins lead the team to a 4-8 record with wins over nationally ranked TCU and 25 MOPs among both the Hunt Seat and Western teams. In the 2016-17 season, Wilkins lead the team to the NCEA National Championship for the first time in four years. Reaching that achievement, Wilkins broke records being the youngest SDSU head coach to take a team to nationals, the first coach to take a team alone and the first SDSU coach to take a team since the crowning of one champion. In her first season on the SDSU staff as the primary hunt seat coach, Wilkins helped guide the Jackrabbit hunt seat riders to one of the most successful seasons in school history, as three single-season records fell with five more single-season top fives as well. Wilkins-coached riders set SDSU single-season records in 2014-15 for wins on the flat, wins over fences and MOP on the flat, adding five other topfive marks for both wins and MOP on the flat and over fences. In addition to the individual records, the SDSU hunt seat squad also set team records with 29 total wins over fences and tied the school mark with five over fences MOP in 2014-15. The 26 wins and 6 MOP on the flat ranks as the second-highest single-season total in school history. Wilkins essentially started her coaching career while a student-athlete at Texas A&M, where the Aggie coaching staff appointed her as an equitation on the flat specialist to assist with instruction at practices and competitions for her teammates during her senior season in College Station. In addition to riding with her Aggie teammates, Wilkins also competed in United States Equestrian Federation events, where she won a pair of USEF Zone 8 equitation championships and competed in the USEF Pessoa Medal finals in 2008 and 2009, and in the Maclay Finals in 2008. After graduating from Texas A&M in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in recreation, parks and tourism sciences, the Evergreen, Colo., native returned home to work with her trainer, Meg Shulman, an “R” judge, trainer and clinician. Wilkins also worked clinics with Rita Timpanaro and Nick Karazissis, and brings experience riding and schooling horses for Hugh Graham in Ontario, Canada.

Logan Pluhar
Assistant Coach - First Year Canyon, Texas Texas A&M, 2016
Logan Pluhar joined the South Dakota State equestrian staff in July 2017 as the team’s western coach after serving as a volunteer coach at Texas A&M. Pluhar applied her 10-plus years of experience in both events working with top trainers and riders. She also helped aid freshmen competitors transition into the collegiate format. Before serving as a volunteer coach, Pluhar competed for the Aggies and was a four-year letterwinner in both Horsemanship and Reining. The Canyon, Texas native, was a two-time all-American and was named to the NCEA All-Championship team in 2016. She was also named the Reserve Champion in the AQHA Collegiate Horsemanship Challenge in 2014. In addition to riding with her teammates, Pluhar also competed in the AQHYA, where she was named Reining World Champion in 2012 and was a member of team USA for AQH Youth World Cup in Kreuth, Germany. The 2016 MVP Reining Rider of the Year earned a bachelor of science degree in sports management from Texas A&M in 2016.

Rachel Boone
Barn Manager - Sixth Year Aberdeen, South Dakota South Dakota State, 2012
Rachel Boone joined the Jackrabbit staff as the equestrian barn manager on June 22, 2012, after working on the staff as an undergraduate student. A 2012 graduate from South Dakota State, Boone oversees the day-to-day operations of the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center, which includes the barn staff and the SDSU horse herd. In addition to managing the staff, Boone hires the student employees, working with them and their class schedule to make sure all of the chores get done efficiently and properly. Boone works with the veterinarian and farrier to keep the horses shoed and up to date on their vaccinations and ensures that all of the equipment runs properly, which requires her doing minor maintenance and scheduling the needed tune-ups. She also keeps all of the required supplies of bedding, hay, grain, supplements and medications on hand that the facility needs for daily operations. In addition to the staff, horses and the building itself, Boone monitors pasture usage to avoid overgrazing, and maintains the grounds around the equestrian center and offices. An Aberdeen, S.D., native, Boone earned a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental management from South Dakota State in 2012, with minors in biology and geographic information systems. In addition to working at the barn for three years as a student, she played on the SDSU rugby team and participated in Air Force ROTC for two years. An avid recreational rider, Boone earned three varsity letters in both volleyball and basketball in high school, and helped lead her team to four conference titles in volleyball and a second place finish at the 2006 state tournament, earning academic all-state honors from 2004-06 in the process.

Dr. Barry H. Dunn
President Alma Mater: South Dakota State, 1975
Dr. Barry H. Dunn was named the 20th president of South Dakota State University in April 2016, the fourth alumnus chosen to lead the institution. He assumed office May 23, 2016. Dunn launched a number of key initiatives in his first year. At the top of the list was Strategic Planning, 2023, the university’s next strategic plan process that launched in January 2017 with an implementation goal of July 1, 2018. It includes a collaborative and extensive process, reaching out to all corners of South Dakota and renewing the values of the 1862 land-grant mission that founded South Dakota State University. Dunn also developed and began the Wokini Initiative, an effort that will offer programming and support to enrolled members of the state’s nine tribal nations interested in gaining access to educational and advancement opportunities at South Dakota State University. Wokini will also enhance research and outreach collaborations and programs with tribes, tribal colleges and other tribal organizations in the state. Dunn’s time at SDSU dates to the mid 1970s when he received a bachelor’s degree in biology at SDSU and subsequently completed two graduate degrees in animal science—a master’s in 1977 and a Ph.D. in 2000. He became the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council endowed dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences in 2010. He also served as director of SDSU Extension and as a professor of animal science. As dean, Dunn led a college with some 550 faculty and staff, 2,800 graduate and undergraduate students, and a $78 million annual budget, including more than $20 million in grant and contract awards, fundraising and development. He shaped the academic and strategic direction of eight departments, spanning 18 degree programs, one regional research and outreach center, six research field stations and 14,500 acres of Agricultural Experiment Station research land. As Extension director, Dunn administered and set the vision for five program areas across two colleges and nine departments, as well as eight regional extension centers with a $12 million annual budget. He led a team of approximately 150 faculty and staff members and 3,500 adult volunteers. Prior to that, Dunn spent six years at Texas A&M University-Kingsville from 2004 to 2010, as executive director of the King Ranch Institute for Range Management. He first worked in Brookings as an Extension livestock specialist and as an assistant professor in SDSU’s Department of Animal and Range Science from 1997 to 2004. From 1979 to 1996, Dunn was a successful rancher, managing his family’s cattle ranch in Mission, South Dakota. In 2015, he was appointed to the South Dakota Habitat Conservation Fund by Gov. Dennis Daugaard, and to the Governor’s Pheasant Work Group, 2014. He served as an ex-officio member of the Ag Advisory Board for the First Dakota National Bank, Yankton South Dakota, from 2011 to 2016, and was a member of the Board of Directors for Padlock Ranch, Dayton, Wyoming from 2009 to 2017. Dunn has a rich academic background, was a successful rancher and farm operator and is a published author and researcher. He is a nationally recognized expert in beef production and ranching systems, and is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Range Management, the American Society of Animal Science, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He has a deep historical and cultural knowledge of South Dakota and South Dakota State University, and strong, statewide relationships with industry influencers and stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, university administration, faculty and staff. Dunn and his wife, Jane, maintain her family’s original homestead north of Brookings where they raised their two sons.

Justin Sell
Athletic Director Alma Mater: Bowling Green State, 1991
Justin Sell, who was honored as a recipient of the 2014-15 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year Award, has moved Jackrabbit Athletics forward in a number of areas of its Division I pursuits since being introduced as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University on May 7, 2009. At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Under his leadership, Jackrabbit Athletics has continually made strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in reconnecting with alumni. Athletically, the Jackrabbits have claimed 29 regular and postseason league championships in seven different sports since 2009-10. That broad-based success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy five times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16), along with winning both the Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, and was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 2010-11 season. In the classroom, SDSU student-athletes regularly post a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 2012-13 academic years, and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in all eight years in the league (2008-15). In January of 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU Athletics. Learfield Sports directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights. Additionally, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting current student-athletes at SDSU. Sell also has implemented other aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which have resulted in record average attendance for football during both the 2009 and 2016 seasons, as well as the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club. Ticket sales totaled more than $1 million for the first time during the 2011-12 season, and has steadily grown to more than $4 million. In addition, the Jackrabbit Athletic Scholarship Auction raised a record $1 million in April 2017. On the facilities front, Sell has overseen dramatic upgrades and expansion of competition and practice venues through development and implementation of the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center was completed in 2010, and Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, as well as other recent improvements to the home of Jackrabbit baseball. More recently, construction of the $32 million Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex was completed in the fall of 2014. The facility, which serves as a competition venue for indoor track and field and as a practice facility for football and a number of other outdoor sports, contains one of only a handful of 300-meter indoor tracks in the country, as well as expanded facilities for sports medicine and strength and conditioning. In addition, construction of the $65 million Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, which serves as the home of Jackrabbit football, was completed in the fall of 2016. In the fall of 2014, Sell was appointed by the NCAA Board of Directors to represent The Summit League and Missouri Valley Football Conference on the newly formed Division I Council. He currently chairs both the Division I Transfer Working Group and the Student-Athlete Experience Committee. Born in Salem, Oregon, and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. In the Brookings community, where Sell lives with his wife, Jennie, and their four children: Abbie, Zach, Josh and Eric, he has served as vice president of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce and Brookings Friends of Baseball, and is a member of the Brookings Health System Board of Trustees. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992.

HISTORY OF SDSU EQUESTRIAN A new era of athletic competition at South Dakota State began in the fall of 2005 as the school fielded its first varsity equestrian team. Equestrian emerged as a natural fit at SDSU as a land-grant institution with strong ties to agriculture. SDSU offers majors in pre-veterinary and animal science in its College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, while offering courses in equine studies. The program formed in the spring of 2004, making equestrian the 21st sport at SDSU, 10 sports for men and 11 for women. Megan McGee came on board as the program’s first head coach Aug. 31, 2004, and served in that position through the 2009-10 season. Joe Humphrey joined the coaching staff in the spring of 2005, and took over the head coaching duties on an interim basis from the fall of 2010 through June 2011. Megan Rossiter took over the program and guided it until 2015, when current head coach Ellie Wilkins took the reigns. During the inaugural 2005-06 season, the Jackrabbits put together a schedule that included five head-to-head competitions against some of the top Varsity Equestrian programs in the country, including opening competition Oct. 1, 2005, at Kansas State. The first head-to-head win in program history came on Nov. 20, when the Jacks beat Stephen F. Austin. SDSU filled its schedule by competing in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association events, something the team did through the 2010-11 season before switching exclusively to varsity equestrian shows. During the 2006-07 season, Kaylee DeVries became the first Jackrabbit rider to qualify for national competition, earning a trip to IHSA Nationals in intermediate equitation on the flat. Over the years, 10 other Jackrabbit riders earned a chance to ride at IHSA Nationals before the program shifted to competing solely at NCEA events in the fall of 2011. Also in the spring of 2007, the Jackrabbit Western squad became the first SDSU equestrian team to make a national tournament, when it earned a selection to ride in the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas. Eleven riders qualified for regional competition during the 2007-08 season, with four earning trips to national competition. The 2008-09 season saw 10 Jackrabbit riders qualify for regional events and a school-record eight riders that moved on to national competition. The Jackrabbit western team boasts a total of five appearances at Varsity Equestrian Nationals, now known as the NCEA National Championships, held annually in Waco, Texas, with the hunt seat squad making its initial appearance at nationals in 2013, when both teams made school history by becoming the first Jackrabbit teams to advance at NCEA Nationals. Starting in the 2013-14 season, the NCEA separated teams into hunt seat and western. Although the two disciplines still exist separately, teams win or lose based on a total team score of hunt seat and western teams combined. Additionally, teams can only qualify for NCEA Nationals as one team, meaning that a school’s western and/or hunt seat team can no longer qualify on its own. In 2011, Jackrabbit Reining rider Angela Gebhart made history by becoming the first-ever SDSU rider to earn all-American honors. The Maple Grove, Minn., native post-

ed a 6-1 record in her senior season, with four MOP awards to her credit. Following in Gebhart’s footsteps, Laura Dunlavy was awarded all-American in 2013, also in Reining, after posting a school-record 12 wins with just three losses in her junior campaign, with a trio of MOP honors. A Cornelius, Ore., native, Raivenne Scott joined the growing class of Reining all-Americans in 2014 when she finished her sophomore season with a 10-0-1 record, with one MOP to earn the award. Mariah Wright, a Wooster, Ohio native, became the youngest to win the award in 2015 when she recorded nine wins and five MOPs in Reining, breaking a school record. Helen Lauth earned reining all-American honorable mention in 2012 after going 7-2 on the season. Jessie Miller added an All-American honorable mention selection in 2013 with a 6-3 mark, while Lauren Kerr became the first hunt seat rider to get an All-American honorable mention selection in 2013 with a 6-1 record on the Flat. Marielle Golden, Flat, and Miranda Sullivan, Reining, added to the list in 2015, while Kelsey Swainston became the first Horsemanship rider to win the award in 2016. Mariah Wright added to her awards in 2016 as well. Along with the individual accomplishments, the program picked up a number of team milestones over the years as well; including the programs first win over a ranked team, which came over No. 3 ranked Georgia on Nov. 17, 2013, when the Jacks topped the Bulldogs on raw score. The win over Georgia also propelled the Jackrabbits to their first-ever national ranking, as the team went from receiving votes in the National Equestrian Coaches Poll to ranked No. 9. Later on in the 2012-13 season, the Jacks made history again by advancing at NCEA Nationals for the first time in school history. The western squad downed UT-Martin in the opening round at nationals before falling to Auburn the second round. That same year, the hunt seat team not only qualified for nationals for the first time, but also edged TCU on raw score to advance to the second round, where they came up short against Kansas State. Despite missing out on NCEA Nationals, the 2014-15 Jackrabbits did leave their mark on program history, as the hunt seat riders posted one of the most successful seasons in school history, as they set team records with 29 total wins over fences and tied the school mark with five over fences MOP, while their 26 wins and six MOP on the flat ranks as the second-highest single-season total in school history. They also set single-season records in for wins on the flat, wins over fences and MOP on the flat, adding five other top-five marks for both wins and MOP on the flat and over fences. In the 2016-17 season, the Jackrabbits qualified for the NCEA National Championship for the first time in four years and the first time since crowning one overall champion. No. 11 seed SDSU faced No. 6 seed South Carolina in the first round, falling to a 1-15 decision. The NCEA honored 14 Jacks on the academic team, including five first-team honorees. Head coach Ellie Wilkins served as the lone leader for the season, while breaking SDSU records taking the team to nationals. The team accumulated a total of 15 MOPs in all four disciplines.

DEHAAN EQUESTRIAN CENTER
Located along the U.S. Highway 14 Bypass north and east of the SDSU campus, the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center became the new home for Jackrabbit Equestrian at South Dakota State University when it opened in the fall of 2008. Dedicated Oct. 15, 2008, project benefactor Nathelle DeHaan’s avid support of South Dakota State University and love for horses grew to make the SDSU Equestrian program and the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center a reality. A 1937 graduate of South Dakota State, Nathelle DeHaan provided the initial gift to build the facility. For nearly five decades, she and her late husband, Lawrence played an active role in the local horse community, traveling to judge and show quarter horses. Nathelle DeHaan died Jan. 24, 2011 at the age of 96, but not before she realized her dream of seeing the day when young women could attend college, compete at the highest level and create experiences and memories that last a lifetime. “The Equestrian program provides a wonderful opportunity for young women,” DeHaan said at the dedication of the facility. “I’m excited about the future of the SDSU Equestrian team.” Completion of the building in the spring of 2008 more than tripled the team’s previous training facilities. At nearly 26,000 square feet, the $3.6 million climate-controlled facility features an indoor riding arena, 42 stalls with additional areas for grooming, washing and preparing the horses, as well as separate on-site work areas for veterinarians and farriers. In addition, to the area for the horses, the building houses a team locker room equipped with a study area.

“The DeHaan Equestrian Center is a beautiful and thoroughly modern facility, equal to any collegiate equestrian center in the country,” former SDSU head equestrian coach Megan Rossiter said. “A facility this size allows us to provide a first-class practice and competition venue for our student-athletes and spectators.” The additional space allows the team’s roster to eventually grow to 60 riders while continuing to offer the NCAA-maximum 15 full scholarships. The proximity of the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center to the main SDSU campus makes it unique in the collegiate equestrian ranks and allows the equestrian program to become further ingrained in the SDSU Athletic Department. Once the SDSU Foundation completes fundraising for phase I, planning begins for the second phase of the project. Phase II includes the addition of a stall barn, a large outdoor riding arena, viewing rooms, coaching offices, a meeting room and trophy room. “Completion of phase II would allow the program to continue attracting top-level student-athletes from around the country and help us enhance the growth of our equestrian program,” Rossiter said. ABOUT SDSU
STATE UNIVERSITY Legend of the Jackrabbit There are two theories as to how and why the Jackrabbit nickname evolved. The most common belief is that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College, as the university was then known. A reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, was believed to have written that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname is given in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. There is a poem in the 1907 yearbook that puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, school athletic teams were known as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.
