Men’s Season Preview After losing its top senior class in the NCAA Division I-era, the South Dakota State men’s golf team struggled at times during the 2009-10 season. However, with a young core of talent gaining experience, the future could be bright for the Jackrabbits. “We’ve got a lot of young talent; we don’t have any seniors,” head coach Jared Baszler said. “We had a lot of young guys get a lot of experience last year.” “The sky is the limit as far as our potential goes. It’s just a matter of what they want to do with it.” Junior Nolan Meyer competed in every event and had the team’s best scoring average last season at 76.64 in 28 rounds. He posted three top-25 finishes. Meyer also tied for the lowest 18-hole score of the season with a 69 in the second round at the Mizzou Tiger Intercollegiate. Meyer won the South Dakota Golf Association Men’s Match Play Championship this past summer. Baszler said, “He has a lot of physical ability. I expect him to have a really good year as a junior.” Junior Brian Wynia saw more rounds last year. He competed in eight events and compiled a scoring average of 78.63 in 22 rounds. His best finish was a tie for seventh at the Jackrabbit Invitational, where he shot a 220 (78-73-69). His seventh place finish was the men’s best individual finish of the season. “Brian Wynia had a lot of solid
finishes in his first two years here,” said Baszler. “He has the ability to be one of our better players.” The Jacks brought in four freshmen for the 2009-10 campaign – Kyle Cooper, Parker Edens, Greg Fehrman and David Smith – and they each saw significant playing time. Edens established himself as a regular on SDSU’s five-man tournament roster, competing in every event while carding a 77.78 scoring average in 28 rounds. His best finish of the season came at the Jackrabbit Invitational, where he tied for 11th with a 222 (76-7571). Smith, a U.S. Amateur qualifier in the summer of 2009, performed well in his college debut at the Fairway Club Invitational. The Plymouth, Minn., native, who was competing as an individual, finished in a tie for 14th after shooting a 218 (74-71-73). Smith competed in six events, compiling a scoring average of 78.76 in 17 rounds. He shot the lowest 36-hole (145) and 54-hole (218) scores amongst the Jackrabbit players in the fall season. Cooper played in five events last year. He tied for 19th at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate after shooting a 227 (81-72-74). Cooper averaged 77.50 in 14 rounds. Fehrman competed in five events with a scoring average of 76.80 in 15 rounds. He tied for 19th at the Hawkeye Invitational (Iowa) shooting a 222 (73-76-73). Junior Matthew Erickson
competed in three events, posting an 81 average in eight rounds. The Jackrabbits also add two freshmen this fall, Hudson Carpenter and Lukas Davison. Carpenter, from Stillwater Minn, was the top ranked junior golfer in Minnesota. Davison, from Fargo, N.D., was a three-time all-state golfer, and he led his conference in scoring average as a senior. SDSU shot its low 18- (301), and 54-hole (908) team scores at the Hawkeye Invitational. The Jacks’ best 36-hole score was a 603 at the Mizzou Tiger Intercollegiate. The Jacks’ finished seventh at both the Jackrabbit Invitational and the Hawkeye Invitational, their best team finishes of the season. SDSU had a scoring average of 307.39 in 28 rounds. The Jackrabbit men finished eighth at The Summit League Championships, just seven strokes away from finishing in the top five. “I think we have a chance to be really good. Conference-wise, the teams to beat last spring lost a lot of kids,” said Baszler. The Jacks have five scheduled events for the fall and five scheduled events for the spring, including the annual Dakota Cup. The SDSU men’s and women’s golf teams are hosting the Jackrabbit Invitational in Primm, Nev. March 14 and 15. The men are playing the 7,065-yard, par-71 Desert Course. Women’s Season Preview The South Dakota State women’s golf team rewrote the school’s Division I record book last season. They also finished in second place at The Summit League Championship, and the Jackrabbit women have six players back from last year’s squad. The women had 12 individual top-25 finishes and three individual top-10 finishes. They posted the lowest 18- (303), 36(614) and 54-hole (935) scores during the Xavier International at LPGA International on Oct. 9-11. In 10 events, the Jackrabbits posted a scoring average of 319.13, more than four shots better than the previous years single-season school record of 323.68. “The women have the potential to have their best year ever,” said head coach Jared Baszler. “We set a lot of records last year.” Morgan Fitts picked up right where she left off in high school, carding an 80.86 average in 29 rounds. Her best finish was 13th at The Summit League Championship, where she shot a 240 (83-78-79). “Morgan Fitts is a sophomore, and there’s always a big jump in golf between freshmen and sophomores,” Baszler noted. “She was able to come in right away as a freshman and contribute to our team’s success.” SDSU added Rachel Hanigan, a junior transfer from Nebraska, to the spring 2010 roster. Hanigan compiled a scoring average of 80.50 in 14 rounds. She had a career-best finish of fifth place at The Summit League
Championships, shooting a 235 (76-80-79). “Rachel Hanigan finished fifth at the conference tournament, said Baszler. “She just has to be a bit more consistent. She had a lot of really good rounds. “She can be one of the better players in the conference; she has the ability to do it.” Brittany Hanten carded an 80.37 scoring average in 29 rounds. She finished in fourth place, the highest individual finish of the season, at the Creighton Classic shooting a 161 (81-80). “Brittany Hanten had a great spring season last year and really improved,” said Baszler. Rebecca Swords compiled a scoring average of 81.86 in 29 rounds. She had a season best finish of 15th at the Creighton Classic shooting a 168 (83-85). Whitney Schrader, who has played 72 career rounds, posted a scoring average of 84.21 in 23 rounds last season. She competed as an individual at the Creighton Classic and finished in a tie for 22nd place, her best finish of the season, shooting a 176 (87-89). Senior Abby Feehan competed in three events, posting an 87.55 scoring average in nine rounds. The Jackrabbit women also add freshman Katie Purcell from Ames, Iowa. Purcell won back-toback state championships as a junior and senior in high school. With so many returning golfers, the Jackrabbit women have high expectations and goals. “One of the small goals this year is to win a golf tournament as a team. We’ve got the ability to do it. We’ve just got to get it

Coaches Head Coach Jared Baszler Jared Baszler (pronounced BAYZler) enters his eighth season as head coach of both the men’s and women’s golf teams at South Dakota State University. After coaching on a part-time basis for five years, Baszler was promoted to a full-time position on Aug. 5, 2008. He helped the Jacks through the transition to Division I and into their first year of postseason eligibility. The Jackrabbit men had a successful 2008-09 season under Baszler, winning four tournaments – the only Division I victories in school history – and breaking numerous records. The Jacks broke all the major school records, including season scoring average (295.59), and low 18- (280), 36- (566) and 54-hole (857) scores. SDSU graduated its best class since moving to Division I – Trent Peterson, Geoff Mead and Tim Kalil. Peterson, who was named The Summit League Men’s Golfer of the Year and also made the PING All-Central Region Team, became the first Jackrabbit to qualify for NCAA D-I postseason play when he was selected as an at-large pick for the South Central Regional. Peterson and Mead had two individual victories apiece between 200708 and 2008-09, and they are the only Jacks in school history to post D-I wins. Peterson and Mead, who were both first-team all-league performers in 2009, also hold every season and career school record since the team moved to Division I. The 2009-10 men’s team struggled at times compared
to the previous year. They did gain valuable experience though. With most of those players back, they should be improved this season. Baszler has also worked hard to turn around the women’s program through solid recruiting. The roster featured just four players during the spring 2007 season, however, the number quickly grew to eight in 2007-08, 12 in 2008-09, eight last year and seven this fall The Jacks finished second at The Summit League Women’s Golf Championship last year, following a fifthplace finish the year before. The women also return all but two of their golfers from last season. Both teams again excelled off the golf course in 2009-10, producing 11 academic all-conference studentathletes (seven men and four women). Additionally, the men made the Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team in 2008 and 2009 after posting a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Baszler earned Midwest Conference medalist honors two times (1999 and 2002) during his collegiate playing career at Grinnell College (Iowa). He also earned team most valuable player honors three times (1999, 2000 and 2002), before earning a bachelor’s degree in computer science in 2002. During his prep career at De Smet High School, Baszler qualified for the state Class B tournament five times, earning runner-up honors as a freshman. Baszler helped lead De Smet to the Class B state team title his junior year, while also competing on three state runner-up teams. Baszler married his wife, Ashley, in July of 2009.
Assistant Coach Steve Klock Steve Klock enters his fourth year as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s golf teams at South Dakota State after having a four-year playing career at SDSU. Klock is also a teaching professional in Sioux Falls. As a senior at SDSU in 2006-07, Klock had three top-25 finishes, including one top-10. His careerbest finish was a tie for ninth at the Fort Lauderdale Spring Classic. In 23 rounds, he posted a scoring average of 75.35, which is the ninth-best mark by a Jackrabbit since the move to Division I.
4
During the 2005-06 season, Klock posted five top-25s and a scoring average of 75.43 in 23 rounds. He took 11th at the NCAA Division I Independent Championships. As a sophomore in 2004-05, the school’s first at the Division I level, Klock had a 76.69 scoring average in 26 rounds. Klock was named honorable mention to both the 200405 and 2005-06 Division I All-Independent golf teams. Klock’s name can be seen in several areas of the school’s Division I career record book. He is fifth in rounds played (72), fourth in scoring average (75.86) and top-25s (12), and tied for fourth in top-10s (3). Klock, a native of Sioux Falls, graduated from Lincoln High School, where he was team captain and MVP his final two seasons.

David Chicoine President
Justin Sell Athletic Director
Appointed in 2007, President David L. Chicoine ’69 is the third alumnus to sit in the South Dakota State University president’s office. President Chicoine spent the majority of his 30 years away from State in higher education at the University of Illinois, where he held administrative posts, including Vice President of Technology and Economic Development and Dean of the College of Agriculture. While vice president at the University of Illinois, President Chicoine helped launch IllinoisVENTURES, LLC, a seed and early-stage technology investment firm. He also reached new milestones each year in restructuring the university’s technology licensing offices. As its dean, President Chicoine transformed the College of Agriculture, leaving it with seven academic departments and an Information Technology unit in place of the previous 14 administrative units. He raised $134 million in private gifts (surpassing the campaign’s goal of $115 million) and increased the endowment to $60 million. Of the eight siblings in President Chicoine’s family, five attended State, including President Chicoine and his brother Jeff, who finished school here the year before him. The president and his wife, Marcia, live in Woodbine Cottage. Their family includes son Joshua, a Chicagobased musician; daughter-in-law Laura Ellsworth; granddaughter Sylvie; and their late son Jason. President Chicoine is the 19th president of the University and the 17th to live in the cottage.

Brookings Country Club History Around 1920, a group of young men that included Horace and Van Fishback, Elmer Sexauer, Earl Bartling and a few others created the first golf course by mowing the pasture behind Fishback’s barn. Tomato cans were used to make the nine holes. The 8 foot wide greens were constructed with sand and oil. In 1921, the young men leased 50 acres of land from A.J. Kendall for $175 a year. The course was designed by Earl Bartling and Ward Waltz, because the club had no money to hire a golf architect. Their club started with approximately 30 members who paid $20 each per year for dues. In 1926, a new clubhouse was constructed. It was 28x50 feet in size with porches on the north and east sides. A dance floor, basement, concession room, locker rooms and a kitchen were also included. In 1945, the greens were redone, and in the 1960s, nine new holes were added.
Recently, additions were made to the clubhouse, and the practice facility now features a driving range, two putting/chipping greens and a wedge green with an 80-yard range and bunkers. Course Records Former Jackrabbit Trent Peterson holds the men’s course record of 61, shot in 2007. Current Jackrabbit Morgan Fitts broke the women’s course record with a 68 during the Club Championship in August 2009. She broke her own record of 70. Tournaments Hosted Brookings Country Club has hosted several high profile golf tournaments over the years, including the South Dakota Golf Association Men’s Match Play
Championship in 1982, 1991 and 2006, and the SDGA Men’s Amateur Championship in 1981, 1988 and 1997. In 2001, the Division II Women’s Regional Tournament was played there. THE SUMMIT LEAGUE As The Summit League concludes its third decade as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, the ascending level of performance among the 10 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes in 19 championship sports continues. Now in its 29th year, The Summit League is in the midst of a renaissance, both on the playing eld and in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, the League produced a national champion, 11 All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans and 33 IUPUI’s Chen Ni became The Summit Academic All-District honorees. League’s rst NCAA female national IUPUI’s Chen Ni made history champion, winning the women’s platform at the NCAA Swimming & Diving dive at the 2010 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships and highlighted Championships. the individual accomplishments in 2009-10. The sophomore became The Summit League’s rst female national champion, and fth NCAA titlist overall, when she nished rst in the platform dive. Also garnering national recognition was Oakland men’s basketball player Keith Benson, who received The Summit League’s rst national individual award for basketball performance when he was named the Lou Henson Award winner as the nation’s Mid-Major Player of the Year. The level of performance in men’s basketball continued to rise as The Summit League was one of just six leagues outside of the “power six” conferences to have both of its championship game participants compete with RPI ratings in the top 85. The Summit League had two teams post 25-win seasons, making it one of seven leagues outside of the “power six” and one of 12 overall in Division I to make that claim. Summit League champion Oakland set new standards for season League victories (17), winning percentage (.944) and tied the mark for consecutive League wins (16). The Summit League’s Basketball Championship extended its visibility in 2010, as for the rst time in history all 14 men’s and women’s tournament games were televised, including all seven men’s contests with a national reach via an ESPN platform. Overall attendance in Sioux Falls, S.D., was the second-highest on record and a new women’s quarternal session mark was set with 5,384 spectators. Several other sports also saw records fall during the 2009-10 campaign. In volleyball, North Dakota State set a new mark with its 37th consecutive League win en route to its second straight undefeated season. Additionally, the League set standards for postseason participation in both track & eld, where an all-time best 50 athletes qualied for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Rounds, and women’s basketball, where three teams advanced to postseason play. Academically, six Summit League teams were bestowed with the NCAA Public Recognition Award, an honor given to teams that have a Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. IPFW led with three teams on the list, including men’s cross country, women’s golf and volleyball, while another trio of teams, UMKC volleyball, North Dakota State women’s golf and Oakland women’s golf, also received accolades. The national reach of The Summit League continues to expand with member institutions selected as hosts for NCAA Championship events, beginning with UMKC serving as a co-host for the 2010 NCAA Volleyball Championship. IUPUI will serve as a co-host for the 2011 Women’s Final Four and the 2015 Men’s Final Four and be the host for both the 2013 and 2017 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. League members were selected for several NCAA preliminary competitions with Oakland hosting the 2010 Cross Country Great Lakes Regional and 2013 Men’s Basketball First and
48
Second Rounds and IUPUI serving as co-host for one of the four 2013 Men’s Basketball Regionals. Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its fourth year of a rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all league student-athletes. Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the creation of a new image and the addition of three member institutions. The Summit League has a combined enrollment of over 125,000 at 10 member institutions: Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. In April 2009, the University of South Dakota accepted an invitation to join the league with full membership beginning in 201112 and currently serves as an associate member for swimming and diving. The League has one additional associate member in Eastern Illinois University, which currently competes in swimming and diving and will join in men’s soccer in 2011. These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League has had several transcendent moments on the national stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the rst round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on its way to a berth in the Sweet 16. A decade later, Valparaiso captured the nation’s attention when Bryce Drew hit “the shot” to defeat No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA rst-round game and spark its Sweet 16 run. More recently, Oral Roberts’ baseball program nished the 2004 campaign with a national-ranking and became the rst Summit League school to reach an NCAA Super Regional in 2006. Three years later, North Dakota State’s 2009 softball team became the rst League member to win an NCAA regional and advance to the Super Regional round. During the 2008-09 basketball season, South Dakota State’s women’s team was nationally-ranked throughout the year and capped its season with an NCAA Tournament rst round victory. The League has produced ve NCAA champions, four Olympic athletes and several All-Americans in the sports of track and eld, swimming and diving and cross country. Numerous professionals and several draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball rst round picks, a pair of NBA rst rounders and one WNBA selection. Former Summit Leaguers Kevin Duckworth (NBA) and Kevin Seitzer (MLB) each were two-time all-stars during their professional careers. Recent and historical success coupled with an increased growth among its membership base gives The Summit League a promising future on the landscape of college athletics.

FACILITIES
South Dakota State University provides its student-athletes the opportunity to train and compete in some of the finest facilities in The Summit League. Within the past five years, SDSU added or enhanced several Jackrabbit athletic facilities, including: • Construction of new on-campus baseball and softball competition fields; • Construction of a new equestrian center; • Installation of new video boards and scoreboards at CoughlinAlumni Stadium and Frost Arena; • Completion of a practice soccer field
SDSU added new video scoreboards to Frost Arena in 2005
The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center opened in the fall of 2009
SDSU further enhanced its student-athlete facilities in 2009 with the completion of the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center. Located in the north end zone of Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, the Dykhouse StudentAthlete Center houses an academic center for use by all Jackrabbit student-athletes, as well as new locker room and training facilities for the SDSU football team. Construction on the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center marks the first stage of a master plan to dramatically modernize athletic facilities at SDSU. The $6 million donated by Sioux Falls bankers Dana Dykhouse and T. Denny Sanford in the fall of 2007 set in motion the construction of the first major athletic building on campus since Frost Arena in 1973. Future additions to the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center, which would be included in a comprehensive athletic facilities master plan, would house offices, meeting rooms and locker facilities for all outdoor sports at South Dakota State University.

Wrestling competes in the Western Wrestling Conference, while equestrian currently competes without conference affiliation.
Evolution of a Nickname
Two theories exist as to how and why SDSU’s athletic teams became known as the Jackrabbits. Most believe that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College. Many believe that a reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, wrote that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname came
The South Dakota Art Museum is free and open to the public
McCrory Gardens honors Professor S.A. McCrory who headed the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences from 1947 until his death in 1964
in “The Jackrabbit”, SDSU’s yearbook. A poem in the 1907 yearbook puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called “The Jackrabbit” because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, fans knew the school athletic teams as the Barn Yard Cadets, which made sense, because the school went by the name of South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907. The Jackrabbit can run at speeds of 30-to-35 miles per hour, with bursts up to 45, making it the second fastest animal in North America, second only to the pronghorn antelope, which can run at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. Properly speaking, Jackrabbits should not be called rabbits but hares, with longer feet and longer ears than rabbits. Most hares live in open country, whereas rabbits - like cottontails live in brushy habitats. Jackrabbits can grow up to two feet long; weigh from six to nine pounds, with ears up to eight inches long. Hares do not eat meat; they eat tender herbs in the summer and woody twigs and bark in the winter.
